Keane: Fans Might Forgive Bad Run If We Win the Derby
Keane: Fans Might Forgive Bad Run If We Win the Derby
Saturday, 27th Nov 2010 15:05

Town manager Roy Keane says Town’s supporters might forgive the recent poor run of form if the Blues beat Norwich at Carrow Road on Sunday. Town have lost each of their last three games and have dropped to 13th in the Championship.

Keane said: “I think if we can get the right result on Sunday then the fans might forgive the little bad spell that we’ve been going through.

“In any Championship match, but particularly in derby games, scoring the first goal is vital and we’ve not been managing to do that over the last few weeks. Our supporters will be going down there and we’ll try and put on a good show for them.”

The Town boss says the club’s fans would fully deserve some derby success after a number of disappointing seasons: “I think our supporters could do with a boost. It’s been a frustrating few years for the supporters here. They need something to shout about and we’ll try and do that on Sunday.”

Keane feels there has now been too much discussion of the recent booing and his subsequent comments: “I think enough’s been said over the last couple of weeks. Let’s focus on the game and on getting a result for the supporters and moving on.

“We’ve got to go out and try and do the business. The fans will get behind us on Sunday and we need to give them something to shout about.”

The currently under fire Blues boss says pressure is inevitable, particularly when going into a derby: “If you win football matches everything takes care of itself. But when you don’t win matches, there’s pressure, it’s part of the game and you’ve got to enjoy it.

“When you go into any derby game you hope there is pressure on your players to perform because if you don’t perform, there’s a good chance you’re going to get beaten.”

Keane is by no means shocked that Norwich have done well since their return to the Championship: “The fact they’ve come up and had a good start to the season shouldn’t surprise anybody, it’s been the same with Leeds and Millwall. They’ve kept the momentum going from last season when they got promoted.

“We’ve watched them recently, they have a go, they look to get forward and score goals, and they’ll be looking to do that on Sunday, no doubt.

“We need to get the balance better than we have in the last few weeks. We need to be solid, but we need to be more of a goal threat.”

Norwich boss Paul Lambert will watch the game from the stands having been handed a two-match ban, but Keane feels this won’t be a significant factor: “I wouldn’t have thought it would make too much of a difference. He’ll get his message across.

"You do a lot of your work in the week and then trust your players when they go out there. I’m sure Paul will get his messages to his staff via walkie-talkies or mobile phones. I don’t think that will be a major problem.”

I always thought a touchline ban was a feeble sort of punishment; nice to see Keane confirm it.

Actually Roy your right and I have seen this over the years. Ipswich fans will forgive a lot if you get a GOOD win over the budgies. If that happens we will then expect you to push on from there. If the football goes down and results go against us after that then you'll be back to square one. First though it is vital for you to get the result on Sunday though.

A win over Norwich would be great, and we'll all be delighted to see that. For "forgiveness", it would need to be followed by a run of good results and the return of entertaining, attacking football however. We are in the bottom half of the league at the moment and the performances are the most depressing for many years (trying to get a 0-0 draw at Hull!) so there needs to be a real and sustained improvement for fans to think we are on the right track.

The mans a fool if he things one win will win him the undying support of doubters. For me I will support the team, but not the manager.

You're a bigger fool then Keane than what we took you for, yes a win tomorrow would be great, but it certainly won't gloss over the inept performance of your managerial reign at our beloved club.

Great performances come from people who are talented, have worked hard, are playing within a system with which they are happy, believe in themselves. I think that there is plenty of talent here, struggling to find a method, poorly organised and poorly motivated. Lions led by donkeys? I'm not at all sure that Sgt Keane could motivate a small platoon of Home Guard.

Rumour has it that Keane has a mentor for the next month - a certain person from Blackpool. Now that would be progress. Only dreaming of course.

After todays results a loss tomorrow will see us just 4 points above the relegation zone! Not much progress at all since last season.

I wouldn't bank on it Mr Keane, although a win might ease some of the pressure and buy you some breathing space. A good run between now and Christmas might earn you some forgiveness...

What a half decent manager could do with the squad we have at the moment. Even if we were to pull off a shock win tomorrow, the man has to go for the sake of the future of Ipswich Town Football Club. As others have said we will always back the club but not Roy Keane, leave us to sort our problems out before we are sucked into a relegation battle.

the good news about tomorrow is ...we can't lose !!!! we win great ...we lose and he goes !! it's a win - win situation !!!

Losing against Norwich is losing against Norwich,- its not a win/win situation.
If we lose tomorrow, Norwich will definately move back up into the play-off positions, while we remain in 16th and only 4 points off a relegation battle.
Everyone needs to get behind the team, we need 3 points from this urgently......a draw will not do....

If we win tomorrow it will be a massive boost to are season and the club but it's just the start. We are now 16th which is'nt great but we deserve to be there. We have to pick up results in the next two league games if not we will get dragged into another releagtion battle.

julesbda, agree with you 2. Any score to say goodbye to Keane will do. A nice 4-0 will suffice

good for you ITFCtommy.
If we beat Norwich 4-0 (with a Priskin hatrick) and do over WBA in the cup,i might just forgive him also.
He has made so many mistakes,a lot of fans are just so fed up with him

A win against the inbreds may just take the pressure off a little bit but don't forget what happened to the last Ipswich manager to get a win over them. If however it goes the other way as most of us expect then the pressure will be immense. Just posted my letter to santa asking for a new manager this Christmas.

Why are people assuming that Keane will be sacked if we lose to Norwich? Evans stuck by Keane after the awful start to last season, he stuck by him when we were in the bottom 3 in January, and he has stuck by him this season even after the Barnsley match. The worst case scenario is an embarrassing defeat which is NOT followed by Keane's dismissal. The league table looks very concerning tonight so let's hope we can get something at Norwich!
