Keane: I'd Love to Take Town Forward
Keane: I'd Love to Take Town Forward
Monday, 20th Dec 2010 09:10

Boss Roy Keane says he would love to be the man to take Town forward and make the massive changes he believes the club needs, but conceded that he doesn’t know whether he’ll be given the chance.

Keane said: “Of course I want to take this squad forward. The changes at the club have got to come from the owner and the chief executive and obviously I’d like to be in charge in terms of guiding that.

“There are massive challenges ahead. A lot of the players’ contracts are up, a lot of our young players, Gareth McAuley, David Norris and others. We’ve got loan players like Jack Colback, Gianni Zuiverloon and Jake Livermore.

“Last year we were dependent on loan players and we’re going back down that road. We’ve got to get the nucleus of a squad that we think can challenge for the top six. But that’s a big challenge.

“When I took the job we were on about two years, to me it’s definitely a bigger job than we all first thought.”

Last week Keane admitted that owner and chairman Marcus Evans would eventually have to make a decision on his future if the poor run continued and despite Saturday’s win says that still might happen: “I haven’t got a clue whether I’ll keep my job. I think the downside for me is that people keep talking about my job. My job is not important. I’ve been very lucky in football, I’ve got a good life.

“What I want is to be given a chance. I think I have been, but sometimes you ask for more of a chance. We need reinforcements, there have been players coming and going and that’s up to the owner. I can only control what I can do and that’s to win matches. It was a bit better [against Leicester] but let’s not forget, we were on the back of six defeats.

“January’s an important time, but January’s a long way away. We’re desperate for more players. We saw that on Saturday, we’ve one or two injuries. But whether I get that chance is up to the owner.”

Keane says Evans may feel he’s given him enough time: “The owner will probably say that he’s already given me a chance in my 20 months. What I would say is I need a bit more time, but I’m sure Sam Allardyce would have said that, Chris Hughton would have said that.

“Every manager says that, so you’ve got to be careful. There comes a time when you say ‘how much time do you need?’, but I still think a year and a half or two years at a club is not enough. But that’s my opinion.”

The former Ireland skipper says he is still to hold talks about a January budget but already has some targets in mind: “I’ve not had that conversation with the owner yet, but hopefully I will do over the next few weeks. You’re certainly better off going into these conversations on the back of one or two results. You don’t make plans to sit down with the owner when you’ve lost six or seven on the bounce.

“I’ve identified one or two players that I think would help us, but whether we get them or not and whether we can hang on to one or two of our own players remains to be seen.

“We’re talking about improving the squad, but we’ve got stuff to deal with with players whose contracts are up, the speculation about Connor, the usual scenario that goes on at every club. But on top of keeping them, we need to add. So many players left the club in the summer that we’re short and we need more players.”

Meanwhile, one of this morning’s tabloids claims that Town players were sounded regarding Keane’s future by “senior officials” from the club last week with Alan Curbishley yet again said to be the current manager’s potential replacement.

You've been given more than a chance Keane, ok we won against Leicester which may buy you a bit longer, but ultimately I don't think you'll be here past June, (that's if you're lucky) If theres any chance of Curbishley coming then "BRING IT ON!"

Whilst frustrated with the progress of the first 20 months of the Keano Era, I'd like to see him take us forward, I'd like to see anyone take us forward actually.

One key word 'Improvement' as he states above. We must improve the squad. With some key players too, talk of Curbishley is too premature. After 6 matches Keano was the dogs boll***s.

The Fans have had enough, but I still have hope and belief. I just trust the players do to.

COYB.

Come on Keano.

Need to settle a Squad Selection and give some players a longer look in the First Team. Tamas and OConnor for a start.

You want to stay on, show us why we NEED you to stay on.

Tick, Tock. . . .

Yep , Talk of Massive changes from a guy who has been at the helm over 18 months is not good . He has had more than enough time to build a strong back room , coaching team and have a nucleus of a settled side in which he knows respective strengths and merits of each player - I cannot believe there is an Ipswich Fan out there who thinks we have made progress under keane ? .It is not just about the players , to me it os about his appointments in the coaching department . We have a decent squad of players ,good enough , I feel , to challenge for top six in this division -we just dont have the character at the top to lead them .- and more importantly an individual they believe in -

You've already made massive changes Roy. What do you want to change now? Your mistakes?

How about tell us what you want/need to change instead of cheap sound bites to cover up your inadequacies?

Results are the only thing that count, try starting there.

More rubbish from RK: "....but I still think a year and a half or two years at a club is not enough. But that's my opinion".

So why did he only take a 2 year contract when he was offered three?

"Meanwhile, one of this morning's tabloids claims that Town players were sounded regarding Keane's future by “senior officials” from the club last week with Alan Curbishley yet again said to be the current manager's potential replacement.".......Interesting!!!

No one can say that Keane hasn't had a chance, he's had more of a chance here than any other club or fan base would give. Great result on Saturday but it hasn't changed my opinion i'm afraid, time for a change in management please.

Keane took two year contract as he believed in his 'arrogant ' way any chump can take a team to the champ playoffs .. plus he probably sold that to Clegg and Evans - Bye bye Roy - remind us what u said about mid table in the champ ??

One reason and one reason only why there are massive changes to be made and that is Roy Keane himself. He has managed to make more of a mess of this club than any manager has in the entire history of the club.

The mistake Evans made was to put the entirely inexperienced Clegg in charge of the club, a largely inexperienced manager in charge of the team at the same time as having very little experience in football himself. To lose Sheepshanks and then nudge Bowden out of the door shortly afterwards has, in my opinion been incredibly bad for this club. If we are to make any genuine progress as either a club or a team, we need people with experience at the helm.

what i found strange is saturday that was not a team playing to get a manager sacked, that was a team who pulled out all the stops to perform for their manager - nothing makes sense anymore!

Keano has been trying to get to the Prem with a Div 1 squad, so was always a tough ask. I agree that MORE of a chance means MORE of a player budget. Fingers crossed for you Keano.

We could not wait for Magilton to go and now we cant wait for Keane to go.
We all want Curbishley now wonder if we get him how long before we cant wait for him to go.

As soon as Evans came here and splashed the cash we expected Magilton to win the league, he was rebuilding the side and getting there, I still think he needed another year or two to do this.
Then in came Keane and more re building and splash around the cash and we all expected us to win the league, still think he is going to need a couple more years.

Evans has not made his money by not having the right people around him to take his companys forward you dont make that sort of money by luck.

He must have people who can interview and recruit the right people for the right job.

I feel we need a 5 year plan and to stick with it, not all this we are going to do it in 2 years, There is loads of money in this division the teams that come down next year will have 80million over the next 4 years.

We need a manager to come in and re build the side over 2 years and then just strengthan the side with one or two players here and there not getting rid of 12 and bringing in 6 as we seem to do all the time.

Who ever the manager is Keane, Churbishley, Capello, Shearer, Linker who ever it may be we need to give them our support and back the team.
But feel we need Evans to let us know the plan ie we plan to get in the prem in 5 years and the first two year will be re building and the manager will be here for a min of 3 year or 5 years or what ever.

If we get a new manager now we will have another 2 years of re building at least, Is that a good thing or a bad thing.

Theres a difference between keane and other managers new on the scene, like hughton, Warnock etc. keane has taken us nowhere and given us no indication that there is any quality in his management or his team. He is an arrogant stubborn man who will only ever do things his way. FORK

"A stubborn man who will only ever do things his way". Thats why he was hired Gary. I certainly wouldn't want a leader who came on here and asked US what to do. Imagine what a joke that would be.

What on earth is RK on about? He keeps going on about massive change required. He's already made massive changes to the playing staff and it's got us nowhere. this would imply that he's just not up to it. Why on earth does anyone think the next 22 players he brings in will make all the difference?

Unless we go on a massive winning run Roy's team needs to be up. Even then I would always be a littel worried and I'd be very upset if he is given money to waste in the Jan window.

He did try to get in better strikers Nugent,Choppra and other defensive players but they did not want to come The squad at present is a mid table championship squad and definitely not good enough in depth. Against Leicester they played their hearts out with really good closing down especially in the first half That is the way they MUST play to the end of the season. We need more quality in depth.Priskin on his way in January if anyone will take him? Stick with Keano.

Curbs? No thanks!!
The bloke has been out of football for two years and he would do no better then Keane.
Better the devil you know!

The massive change we need is attacking, expansive football - bring us that and more victories than losses then you keep your job. After all, Joe Royle did that with much scantier resources than you have and we still berated him. Maybe we do drive too hard a bargain but you know that there is no board in professional football where you are treated better. You have a mountain of entertainment debt to repay but you can clear it.

For such a world class player as Keane was & who played for some of the best managers ever he seems to have learnt very little from it.The majority of his buys have been poor our style of play is not what you expect from an Ipswich team & don't get me started on his strange substitutions! I really wanted him to be a success for us cos if he succeeds we all win but the only thing he's taken from his playing days is his never admit defeat attitude when I think most of us wish he would & go
