Burnley Confirm Austin Signing
Burnley Confirm Austin Signing
Friday, 28th Jan 2011 16:21

Burnley have confirmed that they have signed Town target Charlie Austin from Swindon for an undisclosed fee. The Blues agreed a fee believed to be in the region of £1.5 million yesterday but the club were unable to agree personal terms with the 21-year-old during lengthy discussions at Portman Road.

Austin has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Turf Moor, the Clarets having had an offer accepted by Swindon this morning and the former bricklayer having travelled to Lancashire for talks earlier today.

It's likely that Burnley, handed a parachute payment when they were relegated from the Premier League in May, were able to pay the former Poole Town frontman the larger salary, with the Blues keen to keep within a wage structure.

Additionally, new manager Eddie Howe knows Austin well from his time training with his former club Bournemouth prior to signing for Swindon. Howe wanted Austin to join the Cherries but was unable to complete the deal because a transfer embargo was in place at Dean Court.

Who Cares.

On to the next one!

Lets put our toys back in the pram, stop sucking our thumbs, give up the sulking, man up and grow a pair!

We are adults here - well some of us are!

In principal I agree with a wage structure as there are too many greedy players and their agents are bleeding the game dry. However, given this stance we are always likely to miss out when faced with competition for players. This will clearly hamper our ambition if we have a realisitic one.

I wouldn't blindly criticise Clegg for being incompetent as we have no idea what the deals on offer are. However I would suggest Clegg needs to get far smarter in the way we present deals and needs to start raising his game.

The pay structure can still be the basic starting point, but I would argue that both Norris and McAuley could potentially be considered worth more because they have service under their belts and have proven that they both can perform to high standards in this league. Also by signing a new contract they will in theory save the club money by not having to invest in transfer fees to replace. If some of this saved (transfer replacement) money was invested back into a significant bonus for good players to sign a new contract then the basic wage structure could be preserved but supplemented in other cash incentives.

Somebody posted earlier about incentives with Charlie Austin, I agree. Firstly scoring goals gets you out of this division and strikers will always command more than other players. Paying generous bonus on top in terms of goals and assist may just be a way to ensure that a 20 goal a season striker does in fact have one of best deal at the club if not in the Championship

Although very annoying and although I don't agree that Clegg is not at least partly to blame (based on his previous record as well) ... I do agree it's time to draw a line and move on.

Hopefully Jewell will have a plan B, C, D etc. and hopefully it's a permanent signing. We can not rely on loans. We also need a striker.

First of all, I'd like to say a big thank you to Jewellio for providing something that we haven't had in the past 1.5 seasons - the ability to spot a suitable, quality player.

As for Clegg and ME, let's pull our fingers out and learn to negotiate, shall we? Austin was at PR all of yesterday and we can't get him to sign, yet burnley have him for a few hours and they sign him up. And he supposedly wanted to stay down south?!

Let's try a bit harder next time to meet the players satisfaction, shall we?

I agree... Clegg couldn't negotiate his way out of a paper bag. Get rid of him. I'm sick of this.

BYRNE I think you're missing the point here, nobody wants the club to go into debt to sign players, but the austin saga is not the only problem, either the clubs wage structure is woefully low (miseed out on countless players inc Derry & Austin) & (the lack off a deal in place for Norris & Macauley) or Clegg is just not capable of selling the club & tieing up a deal, ME & SC are saying they want to bring Premier League football back to PR, but they have to sign the players that are capable of doing to the job, clearly the majority of current squad is not up to it. I'm beginning to see the problem Keane was having very much clearer now, & I imagine PJ is probably pulling his hair out over contract negoiations already!!

we want to be signing players who want to play for the club, not players who are only coming for the money. think we should have a look at a young prem player for loan, maybe frazier campbell? we have no pase or strength up top, COYB

Just remember were you heard it first i said on here last night that the deal was off .AUSTIN WANTED 12K A WEEK BUT TOWN ONLY OFFERED 6K a week you cant blame a young striker for that .when MR CLEGG is on 2 million a year .And the way AUSTIN is getting 12k at BURNLEY

Le fondre on a permanant deal or gio back on loan. We need to focus on staying up first. The promotion push can happen next season.

casanovacrow added 16:50 - Jan 28
Le Fondre would be worth a punt, not overly sure he'd make such a radical step up but I'm pretty sure he'd fit into our miserly wage structure.

bluedragon added 16:51 - Jan 28
And by the way AUSTIN is getting 12k a week at BURNLEY

Suffolk n Good - Derry signed for one of the richest clubs in the world and Austin has gone to a club with parachute payments (and a manager he knows and obviously likes)

Nobody posting on this site knows what Clegg's negotiating skills are like - what we do know is ME ,one of the few men whose personal wealth increased on The Sunday Times rich list last year and therefore I would say knows what he is doing, thinks that SC is the right man to be his Chief Exec. Most football club Chief Execs are businessmen first and football fans second.

Well it certainly provided some entertainment for a couple of days. Blue Lady and Dirty can now fgeel free to use the toilet and the drama queens can get off the stage.
Seriously though while it was an exciting day we don't know all of the details yet. Paying over the odds could cause other problems and issues. Presumably Charlie, Burnley and Swindon got what they wanted but it remains to be seen whether he will be another Rooney or a Parkin. Anyway, good luck to him and let's hope he doesn't score against us!

DietmarVanNostrilBoy added 16:58 - Jan 28
If we create the chances Scotland is well capable of tucking them away, he has 7 in 19 starts for us. Suggesting he is good for 15-20 goals in a full season, it's been a while since we have had that. We have a goalscorer, provide the ammunition and we are in business.

meekreech added 16:59 - Jan 28
As I posted before he was never coming here ! The day here was for his agent to get the Burnley deal sorted ( pay , length of contract , bonuses etc ) as he knew Howe from before !

Suffolk_n_Good added 17:00 - Jan 28
Oh well I'll join you then Ranger & accept another 10 years of mediocrity, clearly you know the negotiating powers of SC better than me. How do you explain CLEGGS failure to secure Norris & Macualey then? or is that just good business sense too?!?!....
