Jewell: Transfer Window is Nonsense
Jewell: Transfer Window is Nonsense
Tuesday, 1st Feb 2011 12:38

Paul Jewell says the transfer window is a “load of nonsense” which means a month of chaos in the life of a club manager. The Town boss says he will look at adding to his squad via the ‘emergency’ loan route which becomes available next week.

Jewell told the club site: "The transfer window is a load of nonsense really. All you get in the month or so leading up to the deadline is questions about which players you want to bring in or let go. Then you get agents on the phone every minute. It's ridiculous really. The whole month is chaotic.

"People think that's the end of it when the window closes, but it's not. You can go into the loan market after seven days and that's something we will look at.

"I would have liked to added one or two more to the squad but it wasn't to be and, like I said, we will have the loan market to use."

Another striker would appear to be an obvious target with the Blues failing to land Charlie Austin after agreeing a fee for the Swindon frontman, who subsequently joined Burnley.

Jewell admits that his whole side needs to be more prolific, not just the strikers: “I think we need more goals. I don’t think our defensive record is too bad. We don’t score a plethora of goals and I think we can do better all around the pitch.

“That’s not just the front players, at set plays we’ve got to be better, the midfield have to chip in with a few more and also the wide players. It’s not just the forwards.

“At least against Doncaster we created chances, we did look as if we were going to score goals, whereas against Millwall we were a little bit one dimensional. Hopefully the confidence from the Doncaster game will transmit into the rest of the season.”

I hope we pick up a right back on loan, but I'm not too fussed on another striker (obviously Austin would have been a good buy if we could have got him). We've got some good strikers at the club already, Keane's team lacked service i.e. creativity in midfield. Jimmy has brought back Lee Martin and has added two new creative midfield players, both of whom are useful with the dead ball. Spot on for me, those wailing and gnashing their teeth about our business during the transfer window, calling for Clegg's head etc are the same old clowns who don't see beyond the end of their nose.

obvious thing to point out is if we are not scoring goals from midfield but have a decent defensive record this may well be because our midfield always drop soo deep?

One dimensional is a good way of describing our play under keane, looking forward to some good football under Jewell.

And before anyone mentions Jason Roberts he signed an extension to his contract yesterday so he is not and never was an option for us.

Very true casanovo as keanes tacticts defend like mad and hope we sneak the odd goal, think jewell will be much more positive as second half of doncaster proved. Transfer window, only winners are the agents!

Can anyone explain the reasoning behind the window? Why was it implemented?

What SouperJim said is spot on.

Wickham, Priskin and Scotland can all score at this level but they're only as good as the service around them and the midfield haven't been creating enough this season. We are also poor from set pieces. Jewel has done exactly what was required this transfer window.

Can't see us needing any more midefield players unless we get rid of some. We know have Norris, Hyam, Leadbitter, Martin, Civelli, Bullard, Dury not to forget Edwards and Peters, Healy and the injured Irishman so that makes 11 and I probably have missed someone else out!
RB and perhaps an additional striker seem to be the areas that IMO he may be searching.

I agree - the transfer window is ridiculous! The only benefit that I can see is that the best players from the top few clubs get moved for inflated massive amounts of money, and the rest of the footballing world suffers because of it.

FA out!

I thought it was brought in to stop the bigger clubs poaching players from teams at any point in the season. I am sure I have memories of players having a good run of form and then being whisked off to a larger team. I quite like the transfer window it means you don't have to put up with so much transfer speculation throughout the season.

Needed a goal scorer and a right-back, bu nott keen on loan deals so may be better to stick with what we have.I am sure some clubs (i.e. those that signed players) don't think the window is nonesense! Always two sides to every story!!

The window was put in so bigger clubs cant constantly buy themselves out of trouble at any point of the season. The window is pointless though because it just means big clubs hoard all the players.
The window is the least of the problem with the transfer system, I'm all for a similar system as the MLS though there could be issues with how to fit in academy's into it. Salary caps are a must on a set majority of players so vast player wages doesn't force the average guy to be priced out of football. And the bosman ruling needs to be abolished because it opens up the ability of bigger clubs to bully smaller clubs.

Have to say that I am disappointed that all this Club now seems interested in is loan players - you won't rebuild a Club, or achieve much, with too many of these type players.
OK as a stop gap in times of emergency - but the main benefit is to the player, who gains some match practice. Benefit to the Club is minimal at best for many reasons.

I suppose we have to carry on pretending we are ambitious - it'll satisfy some !.

We could easily field a team of midfielders at the moment - what is it with Managers that seem to find their way to this Club that we need mountains of midfielders. Baffles me.

h32, yep I have to say I agree. Of course I accept the argument that we have signed two 'very different' midfield players, but assuming (and hoping) we play 4-4-2, it's pretty obvious we an only play four at anyone time. It would seem we are very much in the minority though. Even though lots of people complained about the loans under Roy - by all accounts it is fine under Jewell.

That said, the window has closed and we have to move on an support the team. Although disappointed re the lack of strike power / right back - let's hope we put in an excellent showing tonight.

What worries me is all 21 players out of contract leave in the summer - the loanees return to their parent clubs. What are we left with ....

Why do people keep going on about the good strikers we have, Scotland apart the rest cannot hit a barn door, just hope Bullard can stay fit as he may contribute a few but we really need to find a goalscorer.
