Jewell Delighted But Not Keen on Comebacks Every Week
Jewell Delighted But Not Keen on Comebacks Every Week
Tuesday, 1st Feb 2011 22:40

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted to make a winning return to Derby County but says he would prefer his side not to have to come from behind every week.

Having come from a goal down against Doncaster to gain Jewell his first home win, the Blues turned things around against their boss’s former club Derby to grab his inaugural away Town victory.

The new Blues boss said: “I’d prefer us not to, but obviously it shows a bit of character. It feels strange being sat up here [in the Pride Park media centre] after winning a game!

“I said to the players just now that we’ve won the game but there is so much more that we can do better. There are the little shoots of progress but we don’t want to get carried away. We’ve shown character to come back from conceding the early goal.”

Jewell was pleased to see two of his midfielders on the scoresheet having asked for more goals from that area of the side: “Now we need the strikers to join in!

“It was a good strike from Jimmy, he gives us something different, he wants to get on the ball all the time, he’s enthusiastic and he can play, so he gives us a different dimension.

“David Norris kept going, we asked him to make those runs to join the front player and the goal was a good goal. I was pleased to see it go in.”

The win was the Blues third in a row at Pride Park and their fourth away from home in the league this season.

Despite the Rams’ current poor form, Jewell says Pride Park is a difficult place to visit: “I know Derby aren’t on a great run at the moment, but they haven’t got a bad home record and it’s not an easy place to come.

“We tried to get at them early on and I think we did, but they scored and counter-attacked us quite well.

“But we stuck in there and just had that little bit of luck that you need and have hung on. I don’t really want us to be hanging on, but that’s the way we are at the moment. However, winning games will breed confidence.

“I thought we should have killed the game off at times but we gave the ball away and made errors, but that will go the more we win games.”

Derby boss Nigel Clough says Jimmy Bullard’s goal completely altered the course of the match: “We made a brilliant start. I thought we started both halves extremely well and at 1-0 were looking relatively comfortable, then all of a sudden one from 30 yards goes in and changes the game totally, it was the turning point in the game.

“Stephen Bywater has come straight in at half-time and held his hand up, he should have dealt with it better. One very small mistake and we’re 1-1 and chasing the game again, which we didn’t deserve to be.”

The second goal came as a similar blow when Clough’s side were again on top: “We came out in the second half and for 20-odd minutes played very well.

“I think it was their first serious attack [that David Norris scored]. They’ve had three shots in the game and have scored two of them, it seems to be the way it’s going at the moment.”

I am not sure whether it's better to come from behind or to be on top for too long. See what I did there?

Lighteningboy I've got a hunch Austin will be a massive flop. Great win tonight very happy! Jimmy! Jimmy! Used to get very frustrated with Norris but he's winning me over at the moment, 8 goals from midfield at this stage isn't bad, keep it going! Connor gets a couple more and tamas builds on his recent couple if goals I think we could go on q good run!

Great headline Phil! Garv, "8 goals from midfield at this stage isnt bad" Id say its bloody marvelous sir! Especially bearing in mind unlike Leadbitter he doesnt take freekicks or penalties! If he keeps this up we might find it hard to offer him a contract, a relegated prem club with money might try and snatch him with big wages at the end of the season if we are not careful, BRING ON THE SCUM OF THE NORTH! COYB

Great away win Town. Now for SUFC on sat. Which I expect to be a VERY difficult match.

Personally Id drop Leadbitter and bring in Drury for a taster , but suspect we will see the best froim him next season , once he's found his feet at this level!

Pleeeease JB get in a proper RB, and try for another striker when we can get loanees in.

I'd settle for Town comebacks every match - for the rest of my life.

Believing that you might score at all has been a strange feeling, but KNOWING that you CAN score more goals than the opposition when you go one down is the stuff dreams are made of.

"Jim bullard Bullard, He's thinner than Frank Lampard, He's better than Steve Gerrard, Jim Bullard Bullard"

Great win and shoing great spirit. If we can keep this going and put a run together we can have a respectable end to the season.

On a side note what a topsy turvey season, although at times it has been miserable you have to love football and the twists and turns it throws up, one thing you can say its been crap, you can say it has been tense, you can't say it has been boring. It's like Eastenders but with a football - PJ played by Pat Butcher ;-)

Bring on saturday

Well done Town.

Great goal from Bullard, despite Bywater admitting he should have done better, was a very well struck volley from distance and would have tested any keeper.

COYB!

Love the way Jimmy Bullard does in 30 minutes in a town shirt what Grant Leadbitter has been trying to do for 2 years in a town shirt...score from long range!
