Connor Wickham's goal against Sheffield United on Saturday is being hailed as one of the best ever scored at Portman Road, but which other goals are worthy of joining it on the list?

Mariner versus Villa, FA Cup 3rd Round, January 1981. Whole team involved, everyone doing their thing, Villa undeserving Champions put to the sword for one of three times that season, our greatest team at their best...

Whymark's stunning volley in the same game as Mariner against WBA in 1976....he played a 1:2 with Warky and rifled it in from 25 yards.....

Gates scored some crackers in the early eighties too.......

I know what SHOULD have been the best goal at PR - Think it was against Forest; A wonderful move with a lot of our players involved, followed by a long, pin point to an on-loan Marlon Harewood, who had a relatively easy finish and he fluffed it !!

Everybody walking out that night were saying that that SHOULD have been one of the best goals ever scored at PR !!

As for THE best goal- any goal by Trevor Whymark - my hero !!

Why everyone's slates finidi I do not know! That was a superb goal. Bents one against wigan that's already been mentioned was pretty special, and Shefkis against bradford. Miller scored a few crackers. Jim against Bolton at home HAS to be up there, amazing!

Oh and anyone remember Jermaine Wright, Rotheram I think it was, Matt Richards with the ball over and the sweetest volley you'll ever see top right hand corner?

There's loads - Bent v Wigan, any of the 5 v Bolton, Wilnis v Man U, Pablo v Coventry, Reuser @ Wembley, Neil Thompson scored a few too and those are all recent. Beattie's free kick v Bohemians, dream , dream dream

Any goal by Eric Gates circa 1980-82 - only ever seemed to score from 20yds+.

One he scored at Everton when we won 4-1 (I think) was always repeated on MOTD

Holland v Sunderland 1999 (A)
Also special mention for Stewart against Helsinborg...you just knew he was going to take the piss and chip the keeper. And away at Anfield....ahh grace and poise personified!

The Marcus Stewart hat-trick away at Southampton in 2001 brings back a favoutite memory. The game was to be televised and shown live but I would be mid-air flying from Toonto to Edmonton. I called the hotel in Edmonton in advance to enquire whether they could provide me with a VCR and also tape the game. The response was along the lines of "Very sorry but we do not have a VCR and it just wouldn't be possible". My response was "Fifty bucks". The young man that I was speaking to replied "Well in that case sir, we'll see what we can do!"
When I checked in he was wheeling the VCR up to my room along with a couple of beers on ice. Apparently he had brought in his own VCR and urged me not to tell anyone else at the hotel.
That was one of the the best $50's that I have spent!
