Jewell: If It Had Been a Boxing Match The Ref Would Have Stopped It At Half-Time
Saturday, 26th Feb 2011 18:36

Boss Paul Jewell felt that if the Blues’ game against Portsmouth had been a boxing match the referee would have stopped it at half-time. Town dominated the first half but failed to take their chances and Pompey grabbed the three points in the second half via goals from David Nugent and David Cotterill.

Jewell said: “If it was a boxing match they’d have called it off at half-time. That’s why this game drives you crazy because it’s all about sticking the ball in the net.

“Today, more than any other game that I’ve been here, we created lots of opportunities. We’ve had good situations before, but the opportunities we created were really good today.

“When you go in 0-0 at half-time when you should be three or four up - and even at the start of the second half we should have gone 1-0 up - you start to wonder whether it’s going to be your day. And the manner of the goals we conceded was doubly disappointing.”

The Town manager thought there were similarities with Tuesday’s loss at Loftus Road: “It was like the QPR game because I felt we were on top, but at QPR we had a lot of opportunities to make chances but today we made actual chances, and not just half-chances, gilt-edged chances.

“You can blame luck, you can blame whatever you want, but you’ve got to make your own luck over the season.”

Despite the defeat, Jewell was delighted with the quality his side showed: “Every credit to the players, some of the football we played will be as good as anyone has played this season.

“Some of the stuff we’ve played in the last three games over the last week gives me great heart for the future, but I know that we’ve got to improve and become mentally tougher. The worst result we should have got today was a 0-0.

“The way we cut them open at times was a joy to watch and we were thinking that if we got one it could be any score. But in any game, if you don’t take your chances, if you’ve got someone on the ropes and they swing a wild left hook and it knocks you out, you lose the fight.”

Overall, the Blues boss believes his side are moving in the right direction: “I feel we’re making progress, but we’ve still got a fair way to go before we’re where we want to be.”

Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill was delighted that his side battled to victory: “It was a tough game, we had to hang in there in the first half, they were red hot in the first half and we were pleased to get to half-time at 0-0.

“In the second half I thought we were better and we had more of a cutting edge and that probably proved to be the difference in the game in the end.

“Our finishing was really good. The two goals we scored today were excellent today. David Nugent, or David Nuisance, is a really good lad. Sometimes he thinks he can’t play on that left, but he’s very, very effective off that left flank.

“I think if you look at it he’s scored more goals coming in off that left than he has playing as a centre-forward.

“It was a good, solid team performance today, I thought they absolutely ran their socks off on a tough day with the pitch getting quite heavy towards the end and difficult for both sets of players.”

Shows the credibility of nugent when he'd rather celebrate in front of our fans than his.

So many chances but no one to put them away. Scotland is useless on his own but jewell is trying to play 4-4-2 so that should cure that. Still need a goalscorer though.

Cannot disagree with anything PJ has said but absolutely gutted we lost to that Football Club. Its our own fault for not taking our chances and once again hapless defending let us down. As I stated on here earlier in the week after the QPR game Fulop is not good enough certainly not at the moment and I suggest we flog him in the summer as if is he not good enough now he never will be. Another very expensive purchase for what we are getting. Of course we lost today because we missed countless chances and this has to be addressed if we are to progress next season. Love thge style of our football now but Mr Jewell there is much work to be done in the Summer. Just two targets now, get the 8 points needed for survival and beat the budgies.

we want a Nugent type because our forwards are very poor costing us wasted points once again missing from only a few yards out and paid lots of money what the hell do they do in training all week should hit the target every time just look at Norwi?? come on PJ do something quick before people get fed up with same old story each week.

It'll be interesting to see how Jewell tackles the scoring issue - whether it be via a loan signing or extensive training practice. Seems the sort of fellow to know what needs to be done (just a matter of getting it done!).

I am pleased the team were clapped off and not booed, as it was such a dominant performance first half and we created plenty of chances in the second half as well as having a good penalty shout. The only thing missing today was the goals and we have known for a long time that we need better strikers at the club. Despite the score, I hope that the new people who attended the match today as part of the promotion will come back to support the renewal of Ipswich Town Football Club. We are not going up or down this season so the result was not so important, and we saw enough to know that next season will be one of real attacking play and excitement. Come on you blues!

i was at the game today with my father, and we both could not believe how we lost the game. this was the best football i have seen at portman rd in years. pompy could'nt live wuth us in the first half it was just one of those games where it just was'nt going to go in today, its not good to lose but town can hold there heads up high they played very well. must get damien dalaneny on a new contract i thought him and lee martin had great games with bullard showing class at times. the whole team seem to be playing with alot more belief and passion. now lets find a decent striker who can bang in the goals and keep this team together we will be going places.

Moving to a 4-4-2 formation looks to be our best option at the moment, the chances of us picking up a deadly frontman at this stage of the season (and on loan to boot) are slimmer than a supermodel's forefinger! Wickham and Scotland up front with Martin and Drury/Peters/Edwards on the wing seems to make more sense (Scotland lacks the mobility to play one upfront, Wickham lacks the experience and Priskin lacks the killer instinct). It's a system that works as well today as when Sir Bobby played it all those years ago, especially at home!

If it were a boxing match, Mr Jewell, Town would have been winning on points until round 9 when they were knocked out by the old one two! Stop waffling for the benefit of the media and gullible fans. Get managing! Give the team some bite. Stop Leadbitter's decline. And get rid of the ridiculous Kennedy and Edwards. Give promising youth players a chance. Be honest.

Just another bad day at the office today,on another day Connor the Wonder Kid could have bagged himself another Hat-trick.Scotland is definately not a lone striker and totally agree that Flapper Fulop is not good enough please PJ get rid in the summer.Thought that Lee Martin was our best player today.

Priskin should start the next game, not only because he is head and shoulders above Scotland (in skill and height), but because I have noticed that Wickham has a better game when Priskin is involved. Switching to a 4-4-2 would be ideal, and I think we are close to doing so, just need to get Edwards out of RB, it is not his natural position.

Why did Priskin het taken out of the squad? Was it because Scotland started to have a little bit of a hissy fit?

Basil clearly wasn't at the game as both Edwards and Kennedy had good games as did all except fullop and Scotland, the ball bounces of him to easily, he can't run and actually looks uninterested most of time. Martin again quality but did fade.. has to put prisken up front if playing loan striker not for his goal scoring but his speed and way he brings players like whickham into the game. Gutted today though deserved so much more, lovely to watch first half not a hoof in site and so much width.

Basil it was very entertaining today yet again, some of the football was great in the first half particularly. You really are a great big silly old budgie

Clearly a harsh result, but that's football. It's clearly still a vast improvement from the keane days, and chances are that there are much brighter times ahead. The only cause for concern is whether two recent late draws and now these two defeats after great first halfs will have an impact on the teams confidence. Fingers crossed it doesn't.

Scotland should put keepers gloves on. He did all Ashdowns work for him today.

Basil Smallpiece. Shut up you clot. Open your eyes to what we are starting to witness at Portman road and you will see that Mr Jewell is managing our beloved club far better than our predecessor EVER did. Perhaps you don,t come to the matches because you certainly havn,t seen the massive improvements i have, or are you just a mischevious budgie!!!!

I predicted 7:2 before the game. Did we really miss 7 opportunities to score?

Martin absolutely 1st class in 1st half! He was running rings aroud the Pompey defenders and putting in some top class crosses.

The football esp in the 1st half was fantastic and a 3 Nil lead woud have been deserved.

I am not going to knock PJ as since his arrival I actually feel entertained for my entrance fee but why oh why not play 4-4-2. I am not Scotlands biggest fan but without any meaningful support what else can he do. Classic example was just before half time when he won an excellent areial challenge for there to be no Ipswich player within 10 metres to run onto it!

I don't think its fair writing him off until he has been given a fair chance to shine!

Thank you to the 3 fans in the Britannia stand who tried to get people singing on the 30 minute mark. Dont give up!

and Basil Smallpiece, get a life and digest pinewoodblueboys post!

great game today, best one ive seen in years with the way we were linking up and whiping it around the pitch, even the 2nd half started well - to use another boxing term pompey were seriously on the ropes and for a team that had won its last three games with none conceded we had them seroulsy rattled at the back. i agree that jason does need to have someone with him up front and is not a lone striker but of the chances we missed his 3-4 were probably the most guilt edged for a forward - he just seems shy of a little bit of pace and his hold up play was not good.

i think they boys need a big picking up, one goal went in at home with 30 minutes left and their heads still seemed to drop. you can see the improvements PJ has made with the team certainly, and i left the game yesterday greatly iritated and with the sence that we had been some how cheated out of 3 points by the football gods - but still entertained, all be it with a face coved in complete dis-belief.
looking back at the clubs weve beaten doncaster twice, derby, sheff utd... these are teams that are still on bad runs of form and struggling, dont get me wrong you can only beat whos infront of you but maybe these results got our hopes up a bit to soon but they did show what we are capable of and the first halves agaisnt hull, QPR and certaily pompy did aswell. i really hope PJ and the staff stick by this philosophy of football. its something thats said alot in football but its better to have the chances and miss, than not be creating the chances to score at all... or some thing to that degree.
