Edwards: Portsmouth Defeat Hard to Take
Edwards: Portsmouth Defeat Hard to Take
Monday, 28th Feb 2011 09:08

Carlos Edwards says he found Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth hard to take after the Blues had played so well in the first half. The winger-turned-right-back says he'd rather play badly and win rather than play well and lose as Town have in their last two games.

Speaking after Saturday's match, Edwards said: “It's hard to accept after playing some very attractive football and creating so many chances, and yet again we came away with zero points.

“I prefer playing rubbish and coming away with three points rather than playing attractive football and coming away with nothing because in the end all that hard work comes to absolute peanuts.

“Saturday was one of those days, you can't fault the lads for their efforts, but it just didn't happen for us.”

Despite creating several of the chances which went begging, the Trinidad and Tobago international isn’t too harsh on his team-mates for their profligacy in front of goal: “You have to credit them for finding themselves in the positions to get on the end of some of the deliveries.

“But it counts for nothing when we put in some good deliveries and you don't put it in the back of the net.

“You can’t fault the lads, they are disappointed. Jason is disappointed because he was trying to get into double figures today.

“It was just one of those days where nothing was falling for either Connor or Jason. We as a team need to try and help them and not dwell too much on this game.”

Edwards says his fellow Trinidadian Scotland is determined to get on the scoresheet more regularly: “Jason is very eager to prove a lot of people wrong, he has set a target for himself.

“He is very disappointed with himself for not scoring one or two today. But it happens and let's just hope it happened only today and, come Cardiff, he can get back his scoring touch.”

Edwards admits that frustrations grew as the game wore on: “It gets disheartening. How many chances do you need to score? When you miss one or two, in the back of the head you say you are going to bury the next one in the back of the net, that’s how I think, I don’t know about the rest of the lads.

“Perhaps we were too casual and didn't have that extra killer instinct that you need to finish off teams. It was just one of those days.”

Overall though, the former Sunderland man says the team is performing well: “We've created a lot more chances in the last five or six games than we did in the whole first half of the season.

“It's very hard to accept this defeat because of the type of football that we played and the chances that we created. But it pays for nothing when you play attractive football and you walk away with your heads dropped.

“When they scored the second we were chasing the game, trying to get more in their faces. Unfortunately it didn’t happen in the way we planned it out in the last 10 minutes.”

Despite the recent defeats, the 32-year-old seems to be enjoying life at right-back playing for new boss Paul Jewell: “We are more positive, we are more eager to go forward and more enthusiastic to play football. The manager is letting us play the football, he knows what players he has and what he wants us to do.

“I think we maybe took one little step back in the last couple of games, which isn’t too much but at the same time it’s hard to take because since the new manager came in we’d gone on a very nice run and had been unbeaten in six games.

“Let’s hope that these two games that we’ve lost are just a one-off. The main extra ingredient we need is just to kill teams off.”

Too right it was hard to take. It was obvious that if we didn't get on the scoresheet by half-time it would go t!ts up. And it did!

I'm still annoyed about it. Town looked really impressive but were extremely frustrating at the same time.

well im afraid Scotland needs to get on his running shoes, pop down to slimming world and have more of a killer instinct when not directly in front of the goal. saturday he looked terribly slow and balls that other players would have got on the end of he was 10 mtrs off the pace and giving up chasing as he knew he wasnt fast enough! A poacher he is a loan striker he isnt. so either play Prisken as the loan Striker as he at least brings others into play or revert to a 442 and have Scotland as the true poacher he is, when he stays in the box and doesnt have to run!

we would be top of the prem if its won on effort,

Scotland said he needed a run in the team and he is now getting that, but still not scoring, maybe the formation is not helping, but on the other hand Priskin is not a goalscorer either, 50 matches and still not in double figures, has the skill but is not a 25 a season man, even at Watford he was not a goalscorer.
Need a goalscorer for the start of the season.

We have the players who will get us the 2 wins to keep us up, so might as well enjoy the rest of the games as we are so much better now than we were 2 months ago

Rather play badly and win. I HATE that phrase, loser talk. I like exciting attacking footy, win or lose. I really enjoyed the game.

Play Ronan Murray!!!!!
He is rated as the best finisher at the club. He has scored a few goals recently at reserve level. He is confident, fit, hungry and aggressive. He has a bit of pace about him too.
Plus he has played with Wickham at youth and reserve level in the past.

paulc very harsh on Edwards who has played well last few games out of his natural positon. same age as Scotland yet 150% fitter and looks up for it every game.

Blue lady - Not harsh, he had a bad game saturday. You are right he is out of position QPR goals conceded (in build up) from RB posn, Derby goal the same, and Nuisance's goal on Sat.

Agreed he is not a bad player but also he is not a full back and should not be played there as it's costing us goals - simple facts i'm afraid

it was harsh Paul he didnt ask to be played out of position so why get at him eh? Full backs of even the very best bred get caught out and he has taken the role on and got better as games have got on for that he must be given credit. he isnt a natural but he is better than some actual right backs we have seen at Portman road and at least he crosses the half way line!! Jewell will sort i am sure, again not his fault that the clown left out without a right back or decent striker (or atually a natural winger as he had let Martin go on loan!!!). I hope we get a full back in and i hope Edwards is then given lisence on the wing to really take on defences as i feel under Keane his wings were clipped and he was forced to play a more defence role to cover our clear lack of right back.

BL - You need to wind your neck in. I'm not having a massive go at CE, just pointing out that he is exposed as a RB, you strengthen my argument by saying "at least he crosses the half way line!!" - That is not the priority of a RB, because every time he does the oppositon get in behind him. I like him as a player but you can't expect him to play th role of a winger (which clearly is his forte) when playing at RB.

You are right that the fault lies with RK for this mess, but just because a player is playing out of position does't exclude him from the critique of his performance in THAT role.

I'll start on Scotland if you want - He was dump!

Can't fault the effort. But recent results (Doncaster apart) have been poor and will continue to be so until we sign a new striker.

Still something for Jewell to build on as we look safe from relegation.

PaulC - Got to disagree with the comment about full backs going over the half way line. Thats an important part of a full backs game, look at Evra, Ashley Cole, Maicon? All full backs that can defend but can also go forward. The game was lost not because of the defending or Fulop's mistake, was lost because Scotland and Wickham couldn't hit a barn door on Saturday.

Paulc Norris was at the fault for the first goal as he let the ball go over his head to Nugent when he could have put it out for a corner. He then got turned inside out by Nugent. I am not having a go at him as do not see the point in having a go at the players, particularly after for what the most part was an excellent team performance, in particular Edwards and Martin were outstanding.

I thought Edwards played pretty well on Saturday, he seems to link up with Martin well. Portsmouth didn't get anything out of them. Still we can't believe we lost this game after the way we played first half. But after missing all those chances I knew what would happen.

It was only going to be a lucky break for Portsmouth to get anything out of that much, they were one of the worst teams i've seen in a while and couldn't believe their luck when we kept letting them off.

sorry Paulc at risk of more rudeness from you i will not wind my neck in as personally my opinion is that full backs that dont cross the half way line are from a Keane style dont conceed and lets hope we can grab the odd goal type of tactic, i for one would prefer a full back who pushes forward overlapping with the winger who can drop back to support in defence, a team that may conceed but scores more. We are beginning to see that here, we just need to start getting the ball in the back of the net.
