Wickham Happy to Remain With Town
Wickham Happy to Remain With Town
Thursday, 3rd Mar 2011 17:18

Striker Connor Wickham says he’s happy playing his football with Town, despite the constant speculation linking him with a move away from Portman Road. The highly-rated 17-year-old has been mentioned in connection with Tottenham and Liverpool in particular, as well as Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Sunderland and Newcastle.

Wickham, speaking at length with Radio Suffolk, said: "I just want to play as much football and score as many goals as I can, off the pitch isn't anything to do with me.

"I'm happy here, I'm playing week-in, week-out and scoring goals. I signed a contract just a couple of weeks ago for another few years and that's the way it is at the moment, I want to keep playing football at Ipswich Town."

The England U21 international frontman says he pays little attention to the speculation: "I don't really read the papers, I just see it if it comes on the news or TV or if my mates from school tell me.

"I know what's going on and it doesn't really affect me or faze me, all I'm doing is playing my football."

Keep working hard Connor. Think hard about your future and don't just sign the first big contract that comes along. The wrong club could ruin your career...

'and that's the way it is at the moment' - fully expect him to leave in the Summer. I wouldn't blame the club - in fact they may have no choice - and the lure of a PL club may be too much for Connor. Either way I wish him well.

If the club has any sense of duty, when he does go he'll only be sold to a club that will develop his ability. He will go, the club already know how much we'll get for him, it's just a matter of time. I for one am fine with that, as long as it's above 10mill. Jewell sounds like he already has some plans with the percentage of the money we'll get. Again, no problem with that. We can't hang onto him forever, we are a selling club when the premiership comes calling.

hopefully he has had a good chat with Richard Wright about leaving a club to go warm the bench in the premiership, we all know what happened to his game!

The young man obviously has good people advising him on his future. I would hope to see him here for at least one more season, then hopefully he can start to fullfill his potential.

Conor has always said he is happy here. Total respect to the young fella and respect to his family also for the guidance they are obviously giving him.

Conor loves us, we love him. Job done

Walk the Walk: I don't think he has yet learned composure in front of the goal mouth, sometimes its as though pannick sets in, hence a wild swipe instead of a stroke. But he is seventeen, it will come. I think we've all seen his improvement in a short space of time. IMO.

Nice to hear, but he'd be daft not to accept an offer from a big club in the summer.

Money isn't everything, but when you're a footballer and your career can get cut short at any given moment, you need to stick as much cash in the bank as quickly as possible.

He seems a well brought up, sensible lad, and I wish him all the best, I hope it's a promotion with Ipwich next season, one season of Premiership football with him being prolific, and then him moving to Barcelona or similar for £40m or so, but I can't see it.

Whatever happens, he's already worth his weight in gold, be it on the pitch, or in monetary terms if we sell him. Top player, improving all the time.

Nice one Connor...if you're lucky you've still got the best part of 20 years in this game so another couple for your home town club won't hurt...take us into the prem son.

I remember a young, precocious talent, with flair, skill, strength and speed declaring his love for his blue-clad team.
He had a tattoo done, scored beautiful goals, wore a t-shirt proclaiming his loyalty and then he promptly left to join Manchester United!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I just LOVE having Connor with us, but let's not forget that it's only us (i.e. the fans) who think of a club as 'us' - the players will play for anyone, anywhere at anytime as long as the price is right (there's another profession with a similar moral code...)

I am okay with this, it's just a little bit pointless to pretend otherwise - either for the player or for the REAL 'us' - the long-supporting, long-suffering fans...
