Jewell's Half-Time Blast Does The Trick
Jewell's Half-Time Blast Does The Trick
Saturday, 5th Mar 2011 20:22

Town boss Paul Jewell says the first half-time rollocking of his time in charge of the Blues inspired his team to their 2-0 victory at Cardiff. The Blues vastly improved after the break to secure a second successive double over the promotion-hunting Bluebirds.

Jewell said: “I’m delighted with the result and certainly the second half. I wasn’t very happy with the first half, I couldn’t wait to get them in at half-time and change a few things, say a few home truths and in the second half we were a lot better.

“It was the first time I’ve lost my temper with them but I felt it was necessary and I think we got the response. Our goalie was terrific, he kept us in the game.”

The Blues boss says his side were much better during their recent defeats than they had been during the first half: “It’s ironic this game because that’s the worst we’ve played in four games for 45 minutes and yet it’s the best result we’ve had in four games. It does even itself out.

“The second half was terrific, I thought we got stronger as the game went on. I thought we nullified them, they were passing it around us in the first half and we weren’t getting close to them. We changed it around in the second half and we got close to them.

“It’s a tough place to come, I’m delighted with the second half performance, disappointed with the first, but at least we’ve responded.”

Jewell revealed that defender Mark Kennedy has a hamstring injury and is set for a spell on the sidelines. The Blues boss says the former Cardiff man will be missed, although he was pleased with his replacement: “He’s been outstanding for us, but in fairness to Darren O’Dea, I thought he was excellent.

“We’ve overcome a bit of adversity as well but we’re delighted with the three points and we move on to Tuesday now.”

Cardiff assistant boss Terry Burton took the post-match press conference with manager Dave Jones at a function and was understandably downbeat: “We’re gutted, we’re disappointed, we don’t like to lose, it hasn’t happened that often and we’re always disappointed when it does.

“But you’ve got to look at the performance and the performance warranted more than losing 2-0. You will have got an impression about the game and no one can tell me that the opposition have come here and deserved to get a 2-0 win.”

Burton felt Dekel Keinan’s first half goal, which was disallowed for offside, should have stood: “It was a legitimate goal, that puts us 1-0 up, we’re dominating the game, we’ve peppered their goal and they’ve hardly been in our half of the pitch.

“We dominated the game but we got beaten 2-0, that happens in football sometimes.”

It really was like the Portsmouth game in reverse, with Cardiff missing chance after chance and looking well on top at half-time, but we did better second half and won 2-0! Well done to the lads, we are starting to look very safe from relegation now.

Have to agree with Terry Burton that was the case in the first half but the second half was ours

A legitimate goal that was offside? Good shout that! If i'm not mistaken we should also have had a pen and were a whisker away from getting a couple more so shut up whoever you are....Terry is it?

Sign Jimmy up permanently no question. Thought there were a few who had really poor first halves, Wickham, Edwards, Norris. Much better after the break so credit to them for responding.

Fancy a win Tuesday night as well.

Great performance. Can't expect better. Cardiff were good. We were better.

All over the pitch we were competitive. You can't ask for more.

Times are good. Bring on Reading. Now for the good bottle of red wine and a perfect evening awaits.

Enjoy the evening my fellow posters.

Keanish: youve literally said what im thinking. How is a goal that was clearly offside legitimate. Pretty much the reverse of last Saturday. Thats football get over it!

Honestly thought we were going to walk away from there with nothing, first half was shocking they could have been 3-0 up! but mighty fulop saved every goal, we should have got a penalty, if it wasn't for bullard we wouldn't have even won 2-0 its a shame it helps narwich but good that we are starting to improve under jewell, bring on reading! Bullards first goal was pure class, the second was fortunate but good enough to shut up the biased commentry on sky. Still not sure that Scotland is right for the lone striker role, would prefer to see Priskin there. nver the less 3 more points hard earned. COYB

Great result but the first half was a bit of a shocker and we were lucky to be 0-0 at half time . In the second half we got wickham and martin much closer to scotland and this really helped . We played much too slow in the first half and isolated scotland up front so the wide guys were not in the game . In the second half we squeezed up and played the ball much quicker going forward and made better use of the 4-5-1 . once we went 0-1 up we actually played better and better and didn't panic which was great to see .
We had it on TV over here in Bermuda and was great to watch . Well taken goals and a bit of luck on the second goal ...Interesting to note JB is a very nice player indeed but doesn't tackle at all due to his previous injuries !! ...but got to love his passion and passing .....Hopefully now safe and can finish the year strongly ...
shame we didn't part company with RK earlier ...we might have had a chance at the play-off this year ....

Well done Paul Jewell you are moving us forward. Great to have Jimmy pulling the strings in midfield (he wants the pull and isn't frightened when he gets it). Great display MF you looked class, and what's happening to Lee Martin he chased and chased all day. Delaney looks the central defender we hoped and the rest done jobs well. Yes lucky to go in 0-0 at half time, but we all know 90 minutes is what counts. COYB great to start looking forward again.

Fulop got a pasting last week and deserved it. Not enough competition to keep him on his toes. today played a blinder. MOM. Credit were credit is due.

Bullard you utter legend; Fulop you indomitable force you; the rest of the team terrific as well; what a win and we've done the double against arguably the second best team in the championship (on paper I'd say they definitely have the best attack). What a perfomance; what a manager; what a squad; tremendous effort to all the fans that went tonight. BLUE ARMY COYB

Poor quite frankly in the first half, apart from Fulop, who was quite clearly our best player today. About 2 mins before our first, I told my tv that Jimmy needed to show his face at some point, and boy did he do that. After the first 20 mins of the second half it was clear we were going to win, after 65 mins of keeping a fickle Cardiff crowd quiet. Had they scored in the first half, we may have been on a hiding, but Fulop was fantastic, and a round of applause to Wickham and Martin, who were fantastic today, plus "lazy" Jason Scotland for pressurising the ball so much all night, in particular for our first. All round, the type of away performance that I hope we can repeat. COYB!

Im glad Fulop is getting praise as he needs the confidence, but i genuinely think he still looked dodgy today and although he did some good saves he wasnt brilliant. Especially when coming for crosses which he punches instead of catches, and some of the saves he did were luck, like that shot that he pushed underneath him which somehow went over the bar. He did well to get down there, but he didnt get a strong hand to it.

Im not being negative as im glad for him, but im still not sure about him. But on a positive note, some of the saves were down low, which is hard for a 6'6 guy (which i understand, being 6'4, so dont mess yeah?) and his confidence will go up as a result.
