Jewell: Priskin Move Calculated Risk
Jewell: Priskin Move Calculated Risk
Tuesday, 29th Mar 2011 12:01

Town boss Paul Jewell says allowing striker Tamás Priskin to go out on loan to Swansea without replacing him was a “calculated risk”. Priskin has joined the Swans for the remainder of the season with the possibility that the deal could become permanent.

Jewell says that he feels the squad is strong enough to avoid relegation: “Without ever counting our chickens, I think we have got enough here to make sure we stay in this division.

“Tamás was not in the team, even though he was close and was around the team, but hopefully he will do well at Swansea and maybe, just maybe, if he does well he might just get himself a move.

“He has a future at Ipswich, but if an offer came in that suited us, then I would listen to it, but he’s not getting pushed out of the door. If he had wanted to stay here at Ipswich, then it wouldn’t have been a problem for him to stay.”

The Blues boss says he has cover with youngsters progressing into the first team: “It was one of those things where I thought it was OK to do. I just felt that we have Josh Carson coming through, and possibly Connor Wickham getting his chance down the middle now. We’ve also got Jason Scotland, and it’s not as though we score a million goals as well.

“Tamás has worked with Brendan Rodgers before and done very well for him, so we wish him well. It’s a calculated risk.”

Jewell confirmed that Simon Cox was a deadline day target and also says he looked elsewhere for loan replacements for Priskin: "We tried to get Simon Cox from West Brom and we tried to get a couple more but that didn't really happen."

Town could also recall Republic of Ireland U21 international Ronan Murray from his loan at Torquay early in April if required.

I like the idea that the youngsters will get their chance.

At least with Wickham playing every game his value might go through the roof!

Bit of a strange one for Priskin. He needs to play well enough at Swansea for them to offer him a contract in the Summer but not so well that they win promotion, as then Swansea will go after better players (unless Brendan Rodgers sees him as being of Premier League standard).

I think this is a VERY 'calculated risk'. Smart move by Jewell. If we can loan out Tomas ( with a sell option ) and try out some young players till the end of he season its a win-win situation

great move i think, if nothing else will hopefully give Prisken some confidence. Also sounds like Connor will be first choice striker ahead of fat boy, good news!

'(unless Brendan Rodgers sees him as being of Premier League standard)'

I think he possibly sees him as someone who could hold his own as a squad player in the PL, he could be in the right team with the right way of playing, just not right for us i dont think.....

Bad move. Priskin inability to score will derail Swansea's promotion push enabling the Budgies to gain promotion. Get him back! :-)

if we had to unload a forward ( which seems strange to further weaken our weakest part ) I would rather Scotland had gone . Rodgers obviously sees more potential in Priskin than Scotland and I think he is right .

" If he had wanted to stay here at Ipswich ..... "

Sounds like he wants away ! Shame, because i have always thought he would do the business in the end .... Seems it just hasn't worked out.

Simply can't see any positives with this. It has left us with only TWO strikers at the club. I just hope neither pick up an injury. This makes no sense to me - particularly with season tickets to sell. The majority of ITFC fans would like to see Ipswich play two up at home. I can't see Jewell doing that now which is a real shame.

That said - no point having a player at the club who wants to go and lets face it Priskin hardly scores a lot of goals! Just a shame considering how long Jewell has now been at the club, that he couldn't sign a striker before the deadline.

Jewell's first error for me. I agree with hadleigh, if we were going to loan out a striker it should have been the immobile Scotland. I don't think that Tamas particularly wants away, but if your manager comes to you and says he wants you to go out on loan, you can hardly be blamed for going.

For me this sends out completely the wrong message to the supporters, just as season ticket renewals are hitting their doormats. Jewell has now effectively publicly stated that we've kept ourselves up, the season is over and we have nothing left to play for. Fantastic. Just what I want to hear when there are still four home games (which I've paid for) to go, including the derby. Really helping to convince me that the club don't take my support for granted.

But, Souper Jim, our season is over, albeit the Norwich game has any significance.
Don't believe mathmatically we can go down nor into the play-off's, so bar a finishing position, that's it for another season.
Season tickets wont be on this seasons position it will be on what we all hope to achieve next season under a new manager, I for one have a good feel already for next season, but then again I said that when Keano came in................Roy who?

Well I think PJ's decision to let Priskin go on loan was a good bit of business, Priskin's been bloody awful, I know some have said we should give him a chance & a run of games, but to IMO he's had ample chance to prove his worth, & he just aint good enough, I wish him well at Swansea & maybe Rodgers knows how to get him to play, but if we put him in the shop window we may get some interest in him in the summer, reading between the lines sounds like PJ wants shot of him, but obviously cant say it too publically, he's called Priskin's bluff, & given him the chance to stay, but Priskin's decision not to fight for his place says it all. I'm all for giving the youngsters a shout for the remainder of the season, at least PJ then gets to see them in action.
Before some of you start moaning about PJ just think back to how we were in free fall under Keane, Jewell has guaranteed our Championship status for next season & for that we should be grateful, I look forward to seeing a good number of new signings in the summer.

jas i just cannot believe you still moan moan moan about PJ yet you thought Keane was god, for goodness sake give the bloke at least half of next season before you get your knives out, you were quite happy to give Keane 18 mths and still defended his corner, what is your problem with Jewell and what was your love of Keane all about?

Whilst never being prolific Priskin will always score goals in the right system, basically 4-4-2. He had some success at Watford so must be a competent player. Likewise Scotland. In essence they are 2 similar style of strikers that for some reason cannot score regularly for Ipswich Town?
I cannot see many affordable strikers out there that will flourish on their own up front so until Town changes the system and puts the opposition defence under more pressure, especially at Portman Road, results will not improve.

hadleigh, swansea wanted scotland on loan at start of month, but couldnt afford him, thats why they came in 4 priskin. very much their 2nd choice. souper jim, what world you living in. barring totally freak results 4 the rest of season, this season is basically over, & no1 with anything about them is going 2 decide whether 2 renew their season ticket based on jewells 1st few months in charge only, but on how they feel abt next seaon. lets remember, if keane had still been here wed prob be entrenched in bottom 3 right now, so jewell has already achieved what was asked of him. so stop whinging, & get behind pj & the team. any real supporter will renew 4 next season. coyb

The only thing we are sure of is we want to keep Connor!

As for the other 2 strikers, well, there really isnt much to choose between either of them. For my money , BOTH will be gone in the summer, as PJ looks to bring in a couple of strikers that can find the back of the net!!

Jewell obviously doesnt want either priskin or scotland next year and sees this as a way of getting rid of at least one of them. i firmly believe they'll be some good wheeling n dealing in the summer, coyb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Calculated risk by Swansea more like.

tractorboy2434 added 21:29 - Mar 29
I cannot see there is any risk in this move, just means we get a bit of cash from Swansea for a few weeks before they relaise what we already know, h'e cack with a capital C and sadly he will be back here when pre season training starts as they will not be paying good money for him, simply not good enough and likely to end up back in Hungary with a load of dosh in his back pocket from mugs like ITFC.

Priskin hasn't scored many but then neither has anyone else! Will be interesting to see how he gets on at swansea. If he starts to bag a few then that's really going to ask a few questions. I still think our biggest problem bullard aside is the midfield.

keeping the wage bill down and Swansea have cover for there strikers.
But who said about Norwich going up, it would be bloody funny if they did as they would get turned over every week. Holt is no way a PL player!
