Norris Could Leave Town
Norris Could Leave Town
Wednesday, 30th Mar 2011 07:26

Boss Paul Jewell has hinted that out of contract captain David Norris could leave the club over the summer. While centre-halves Gareth McAuley and Damien Delaney have been offered new terms, Norris’s situation remains less clear.

Jewell says that the 30-year-old, targeted by Crystal Palace and Portsmouth in January, will remain the club’s skipper whatever happens in the weeks to come: “I spoke to Dave and his agent, and that is not quite as clear as the other two.

“I have no problem with Chuck, he is the captain of the team and he will continue to be captain while he is playing.

“We will see where it goes. He’s comfortable with it, but obviously I understand that players want to get their futures sorted out, as well as we do.

“We would like him to stay, but he will have offers elsewhere, which I understand, that’s what happens in football.

“David has to do what is best by his family, as they all do, but I want to try and get my good players to stay.”

In February Norris, who joined the Blues for £2.2 million from Plymouth in January 2008, said he was keen to remain at Portman Road but wanted a three-year deal rather than the two-year contract which was offered to him by the Blues before Christmas.

Excellent news been a flop for 2.2 million, can finish, but offers little else. slow, small, poor passer.

Derby was just another game comment, did not sit well.

just a shame we have wasted so much money on him.

would be a shame, but there is some quality midfielders out there. And if letting him go and jewells able to bring in two players from his wage I'm all for it. Out with the old and in with the NEW.

Good news if he does leave.

He's all 'huff and puff' without any real quality in the middle.
Doesn't put his foot on the ball, lacks craft and guile.

However, I wish him all the best as he has worked hard for the team, he's just not good enough.

A dedicated servant and has always given 100%. But he doesn't really have the quality required for a promotion push next season. Good as a squad player/cover. Pretty indifferent about whether he stays or goes to be honest.

Does that mean Bullard could be in an Ipswich shirt next Season & possibly captain?

I disagree totally with these comments for a number of reasons. I can remember a number of games where Norris stood out above the rest for his work rate and never say die attitude. How many goals has he scored this season from midfield? For those of you knocking chuck I'd suggest you think for a while about where we might be in the table now without his goals? He certainly contributed massively to our only success this season with his cup goals.

Finally, I just don't get the business sense here. He cost us £2.2m two years ago and we are going to let him go for free. How the heck does that work? Either he's asking for 50k+ a game or we are scoring another momentus own goal. The club clearly rate him as he's our captain and plays every week so how have we got to six weeks before the end of the season and we haven't sold him or got him to sign a new contract. I've run a number of businesses in my time and this is just sloppy management. In any other role in football the person responsible would get the boot.

personally id rather see chuck stay and get rid of leadbitter if i had the choice.

as i think he has performed badly this year and has been a real let down, i would how ever get rid of both if that means we can have the great jimmy bullard

he does make the midfield tick especially if we go 4 4 2

General feeling is clearly that this is no great loss. No doubt he's a real trier and pretty honest as a player; presumably the main reasons others are after him, plus he's scored a few this season thanks to those 'Warky' style late runs into the box but I have to agree that he lacks the pace or quality to hack it in the big league ..... were we to get there, of course. What still resonates with me is that we paid a lot of money for him (as we so often seem to do) and these lastminute.com negotiations with players is, frankly, ridiculous as everybody keeps saying. This is rank bad management and I am surprised that Evans didn't pick up on it as its clearly his money that's been wasted. I think that most of us are probably delighted to have Evans, however, other clubs must laugh at the amateurish way in which some areas of the club are run.

He's better than Leadbitter that's for sure! Started the season well but it's been fragmented to say the least ...
He's half decent at this level and I'd rather he stayed.

I'd like him to stay. He's not been a total success for us, but until his recent injury he was finally showing his true colours, with all action performances plus quite a few goals - something that his midfield colleague Leadbitter doesn't seem to be able to do. A fit Norris, playing centre midfield with freedom to go forward, is probably worth the £2m plus we paid for him

I'm guessing those panning Norris are the 'fans' who rarely get down to PR?! I suspect that he covers more ground than any other midfielder, has scored an absolute hat full this year whilst having a largely inconsistant season! There are a number of other players I would get shot of over him. May not be to everyones liking but battles and takes the ball off the opposition. That's the kind of player that you need in order to allow the creative players to do all the bits that make them appear 'stand out players'! Rant over.

muhrensleftfoot:- agree. Leadbetter's performances over the last eighteen months haven't been a patch on his earlier games, I think I'd much rather he left that Chuck.

Like Norris would be a good player to have on the bench,However if letting him go will help to bring in players like Bullard and Dyer type players then that is fine by me
Wickham may prefer to play week in week out with Ipswich if you have those sort of players in the side than warming Tottenhams bench

on that point the Bbc are linking Tottenham with 3 strikers including Van Nistorory so hopefully they will be bothered at Wickham as he may be our 20 a season man next year

i agree out of norris and leadbetter i would wrather chuck stayed.
maybe the club are looking at his 3 year contract he wants and dont see it viable for them. i do see a two year one more ''worth our money''

goals in general have been a problem for us this year and i think if chuck had of had a consistant run in the side this year then he would be sitting on double figures, unfortunatly though injuries and yet again to many yellows (which i wouldnt take out of his game) has been his downfall this season.

Hes a competitior and a fighter and there are to few of those in the town squad at the moment. i think town as a whole are better with him in the team but if he did go i think he could be replaced, but unfortunatly it would still be transfer funds that would be taken out of a possible pot for a striker and a right back

Why do people compare norris to leadbitter they are different types of player and do different jobs for us, norris would be no better than leadbitter if he was doing that job. Compare him with someone who does the same job i.e bullard.

Surco72 added 09:10 - Mar 30
I am on the side of i would rather keep Norris than Leadbitter as a maybe partner for Bullard but unfortunately i doubt we could off load Leadbitter and his wages so if we offered Chuck more than we have we could be stuck with both which could hinder Bullard signing?
And the fact is the club have offered him a contract so if he leaves it is his choice not the fault of the club

bedsitfc added 09:23 - Mar 30
Imo if leadbitter wasn't doing the job he does for us chuck would not be freed up to attack. Leadbitter isn't a burst into the box player or he has been told to hang back a bit.

TractorRoyNo1 added 09:29 - Mar 30
he's not the fastest but he brings one thing to the team that most don't - GOALS! so to the 'antis' be careful what you wish for, jimmy bullard is a GOOD player, but it will be a HUGE gamble to give him a 3 year contract (ditto Dyer) with his injury record, we could be in the same situation as Hull in 12-18 months trying to get him off the wage bill.

RetroBlue added 09:30 - Mar 30
Norris in his time here has spent a good % of it out of the team either because he's injured, or because he's banned. Granted he's useful when he is in the side - but often is the Club waiting weeks / months for him to return to fitness?

At 30 odd now , do we also want to offer him a 3 yr deal, when consider the above situation?

All pyschological from PJ. We need a terrier to complement Jimmy Bullard / Dyer next season and agree he is better than Leadbitter.

He will sign.

Nobody has picked up on the obvious comment, he has to do what's best for his family, just maybe he wants to retire down south? I like him, a good servant and gives a hundred per cent, we have won more with him in the team than out, but there are other players out there who are as good possibly on far lower wage, as for dyer no way should we risk a contract on him, been back five mins and injured again, pay per play maybe but that can be disruptive if in and out of team.

Over priced, slow, not able to read the game or pass the ball. Fotunately, his time is up at PR. He was only good at getting booked and showing solidarity with his friend in prison.
