Jewell Hopeful Wickham Will Stay at Town
Jewell Hopeful Wickham Will Stay at Town
Thursday, 31st Mar 2011 15:56

Boss Paul Jewell says he’s hopeful that Connor Wickham will stay at Town for the 2011/12 season but admits that it would be difficult for the Blues to turn down “silly money” for a striker of his calibre. The England U21 international, who turned 18 today, was again the subject of transfer speculation in this morning’s tabloids with claims that Tottenham will make a £15 million move in the summer.

Jewell said: “I’m hopeful that he’ll stay here. But at the end of the day we are at the mercy of a big club, let’s be honest with you.

“If Liverpool or Tottenham come in with money that we can plough back into the team, silly money, we’d have to listen to it. If he does go, he won’t be going for cheap."

The Blues boss hopes Wickham's top flight ambitions can be achieved with the Blues: “I think he’s best staying here and having another year here, hopefully getting us a few goals, hopefully getting us in the Premiership and then he’s a Premier League player.

“But it’s going to be difficult for any club at this level to turn down any offer from one of the top teams.

“If it was one of the smaller Premier League teams I don’t think Connor would want to go, but if one of the top clubs came in, it’s hard for them to say no. But we’re not actively looking to sell him.”

Wickham recently signed a new contract until 2013, while it’s speculated that he could add an extra year to that deal now that he’s turned 18.

Meanwhile, Jewell has dismissed reports claiming he is targeting former Blue David Wright, who is now at Crystal Palace.

It would be fantastic to see Connor play in a town shirt next season but £15m is silly money to turn down. PJ can build a promotion chasing team with that and let's face it the PL is where we would love Town to be!

Who actually spotted and signed Connor Wickham for us?

Give that man/woman a medal.

Agreed silly money can't be ignored but to be perfectly honest I can't see any top clubs offering that money because frankly he's not worth it yet, which is in a way good for us. I'm quite happy with how he's progressing at the moment, and with a good pre-season of quietly getting along (hopefully under the radar somewhat) he'll be ours next season and he can really push on and become the Jewell in our crown and score a few goals (tap ins will do Connor!)

We got lucky, his Dad moved to Colchester and we signed him. I bet reading will be gutted if we get anything like £15 mill for him.

Really hope he stays, great prospect but got lots to learn and with plenty of time on his side!

Don't want to see the lad go, but anything north of 8m I would take in a heartbeat....one torn ACL or serious injury and that is the end of the pot of gold that we really could do with.

I think Spurs are looking to the future on this one. They know Connor has massive potential but at the moment he is not worth £15m. However, he turned 18 today and if Spurs want him long term it will be to their benefit to buy him now as he would be classed as a home grown player trained at the club for 3 years between 15-21, which they need at least 4 of for european competitions. ME should recognise this and use it to our advantage and squeeze as much out of them as possible!

I think we should sell him. To be honest, his first touch is never that good, his finishing isn't all that, and apart from the odd flash of skill - he doesn't really impress too much. One for the future possibly - tall, strong, relatively quick. But £15,000,000 would be amazing for us, and would buy us some very decent players!

Like most people say has got talent but still developing would be good to keep him for another year but the sort of money being talked about 15million pounds could really improve the team, especially as we dont have keane to waste it on players who aren't any good.

Well you can bet their won't be any more Connor Wickhams now Bryan Klug has gone. In his entie career the current Acadamy Manager hasn't produced anyone worth having.

Good luck to Wickham - but I can't see him playing for us next year. I suspect the money will be useful in building the type of squad PJ wants - and no way can we turn down £15M.

barnesey...you are spot on!!! Keane falling out with Bryan Klug and then letting him leave was the biggest mistake this club has ever made!! You only have to look at all the quality talent he is bringing on at Spurs now to see this - and he was blue through and through which makes it even sadder. The appointment of Sammy Morgan was also a huge mistake in my opinion - just as well that PJ has seen this and brought in Russell Osman to work with our younger players.

Realistically cant see him being with us much longer, the Prem beckons and we need the money ,we are going nowhere fast ,with current players. Its a shame but thats how it is , its all about money, the haves and have nots .

I have to agree, would love him to stay, but we have to be realistic if we get a "silly offer" I think we should take it, but only on the guarantee from SC & ME that PJ can have the money for re-building.

Lets put £20 million tag on his head and start a bidding war!

With 15m we could buy, Billy Sharp, Ricky Lambert, a decent CB to play alongside G Mac, keep Bullard (& maybe Dyer) & have plenty left over for PJ, then promotion will be ours!!!. No Brainer

I REMEMBER FOREST COMING IN FOR BEATTIE FOR STUPID MONEY AND ROBSON SAID YOU WOULD'NT GET HIS LEFT BOOT FOR THAT, IF WE DO GET TO THE PL HOW ARE WE GOING TO BUILD A TEAM IF WE KEEP SELLING, ROBSON WOULD NEVER SELL HIM AS HE WAS ALWAYS LOOKING AHEAD.

Looking ahead is fine, but window shopping for a Ferrari and having a wallet full of bus tickets is a bit pointless. We need money to buy players that hopefully will get us into prem.

If we keep him and he bangs in 20+ goals next season then he'll be worth £20M+ this time next year, etc etc...for God's sake he's only just turned 18..hopefully got another 15 years or so at the top..let's not be too hasty in getting rid eh?

people thinking that Paul Jewell would be given the reported £15m to re build the team , may be in for a bit of shock as I suspect Marcus Evans would be willing to hand over only a small proportion of this money - assuiming the Preniership Club even "paid up front" , which they never do !!

If Andy Carroll is valued at £35 million at 22, how much could this one be worth in a couple of years? Accept nothing less than £20 mill.
