Jewell: We Can Learn from Derby Defeat
Jewell: We Can Learn from Derby Defeat
Saturday, 23rd Apr 2011 10:58

Town manager Paul Jewell says lessons can be learnt from Thursday’s 5-1 home defeat to Norwich City. The Blues boss is looking for his side to bounce back when they travel to Swansea on Monday.

Jewell said: “We can only try and learn from it. Nothing is ever a waste of time. You learn things all the time about yourself, the players and as a team.

“It was an horrendous result for us and for the supporters, who I really feel for, but we have to try and bounce back.”

The Blues boss says the result was a major shock to the system after what had been a decent end to the season: “Obviously we are still feeling hugely disappointed, but we have to get over that disappointment.

“We have had a good end to the season, although of course the Norwich defeat gives us a huge jolt.”

Town could have left-back Mark Kennedy back in the frame at the Liberty Stadium, the veteran Irishman having returned to training last week but Lee Martin will miss the second game of his three-match suspension.

That Norris, Leadbitter, Edwards, Scotland are useless?

That's what I've learnt.

Could be worse, we could have that dreadful Delia Smith woman on our side. What an embarrassement

We now have a dilema. We could try and halt nowich's promotion campaign by losing to swansea or just beat them in what is an unimportant fixture but at the same time helping nodge

Tractor blue I think its safe to beat Swansea now, they're 7 points off Norwich so I can't see them challenging, its Cardiff we need to be supporting, lucky we havnt got to play them.

Drew:

I thought Edwards was one of our best performers the other night. He was out of position and does too easily stray from his duties, but he is a great right winger and can teach young Carson a lot while still having a lot to offer himself.

Do not condemn him because he is out of position.

Thursday night continues to be disgraceful, and it will haunt Paul Jewell (I hope it does) for a long time - not that he was at fault for the performance - he was trying to kick every ball on the touchline.

Sadly we were thoroughly let down by people and players who were not fit to wear the shirt.

On the positive side, at least the world has learnt that Arran lee - (the hologram) Barrett is not a professional goalkeeper

Drew, did you really need to go through that pain to realise how little Leadbitter, Norris and Scotland have to offer. They have been proving that for a long time.
tractorboy1995, I agree that Edwards has something to offer but if he is going to play at full back he needs to get some defensive responsibility. The first job of a defender is to defend!

I think that we all learnt a lot on thursday about the players. They may be ok at this level but thats it they are only ok with a serious lack of commitment, passion and desire. If you cannot lift your game for the biggest game of the season of almost 30000 then they wont be able to week in week out in the premier league. Could someone show them what pride means in the dictionary. They didnt seem to have much pride intheir work for the majority of the season. The only players who could be excused would be Bullard who gave it his best and wickham and carson who are only young.

I agree Drew, I have been so disappointed with Leadbitter and Norris all season.

As for Edwards you are right OldClactonBlue. With the formation and lack of pace we have in defensive areas when Edwards wanders into attacking positions decent teams exploit us. So often he is caught out. At full back first and foremost you need to defend-David Wright used to. Against a useful Norwich side we had a centre half at left back and a right winger at right back. We need some fullbacks Mr Jewell (probably at least 2).

People who criticise Norris annoy me so much! Ok he's not the best technically but he will chase everything and he can only be effective if he gets given the right passes from the rest of midfield since he is playing attacking midfield now. On top of that Norris was the only player I saw all evening who chased down the goalkeeper at any point in the match and as well as all that he is our top goalscorer with 10 from midfield!

I seriously wonder what some players have to do to get any recognition on this board!

I'm still reeling from the other night ! But I bet the players aint!, most of them are a disgrace to the shirt.

Are you guys actually serious? Norris is our top bloody goalscorer!!! It's such a pain listening to the majority of people on here because you might as well be inbred because of the lack of brains that you have >.>

@J4ck22 Agreed, Norris IS our top scorer! Edwards would be better as an attacking midfield as that is what he does anyway and NOT doing as he's supposed to Defend!

Personally I rate Edwards and think he is perhaps being blamed unnecessarily. He was by no means the worst player on Thursday. BUT he is not a right-back. Of course it's not his fault he's being played in that position - for that you have to blame the manager.

I hope we do learn from Thursday, but was pleased to read in the EADT that PJ has confirmed that he 'always knew we weren't good enough'. Question marks therefore why he let 2 strikers go out on loan - but at least he is honest.

''learning from this'' and 'bouncing back'', sends a shudder through me, very Keane like !

If Norris and McAuley do not sign by next Sat they should be dropped for the remaining 2 games, give someone else who wants to stay a chance, come the summer its time to say goodbye to Norris, Leadbitter, Priskin and Scotland who offer nothing and find some youngsters with desire and above all some pace, a vital ingredient which we sadly lack all over the field.

Jas I think he let them go a. To sell prisken and b to give Murray some experience at a lower level rather than throwing him in at deep end, I think he knew we were not going to get in play offs but would stay up so he wanted to do what was best for club and player. If we agree with his decision is irrelevant, I truly believe those were how motives...... I rate Edwards and if he works on his defence skills over summer could be ok but currently far better at coming forward!

Long term I don't see where Kennedy, Leadbitter and Scotland fit.
There is so much potential effervescence up front with Carson, Edwards, Wickham.
It seems we need 2 full backs, a goalscorer

And a plan......... to get the best out of potential synergy. This sounds like €3million out and €500,000 in.

To be fair to him, the Norwich manager has done a miraculous job in rather similar circumstances.

and don't forget to put a bell in the ball so the keeper can hear it before it hits the back of the net

people need to know that Arron Lee-Barret was let go by waymouth to let him move to Coventry because his wages were to high as they were going in to admin. and ALB released his owe contracted at Hartlepool and was offered a new contract but he did not get on well with the new pools boss.!!! so all this c..p about him being released by low league clubs. he is a good keeper and deserves he's chance at ipswich... yes he had a bad game but fulop didnt do that much better against norwich ether...

Edwards - He may have been able to play at RB in the lower leagues, but in the championship, if you go forward and don't track back, you get punished, which has happened quite a bit when he's played there.

Norris - Cant pass, can't tackle, not much of a leader, the only thing he can do is give his all and score the odd goal, sorry, but that alone won't get us promoted.

Leadbitter - Cant pass, his tackling is questionable, can't cross to save his life.

Scotland - Lol, rather have Priskin tbh.

We need a new goalkeeper, two new fullbacks, a holding midfielder, an attacking midfielder such as Adam Lallana, a new right winger, and a new striker (either Craig Mackail Smith, Billy Sharp or Nicky Maynard)

This will get us up next season.
