Reserves Win Final Game at Luton to Take League Title
Reserves Win Final Game at Luton to Take League Title
Tuesday, 26th Apr 2011 16:44

Academy first-year scholar Aaron Jones scored the only goal as Town’s reserves beat Luton 1-0 at Kenilworth Road this afternoon. The victory coupled with Watford's defeat at Southend means the Blues are the Totesport.com Football Combination East Division champions.

Midfielder or full-back Jones struck after 15 minutes as Chris Kiwomya’s men completed their league programme with a victory which took them to the top of the Totesport.com Football Combination East Division, ahead of Oxford, who have already completed their fixtures, and Watford who lost 3-0 to the Shrimpers at Roots Hall in their final game this afternoon.

It's the first time Town have won their reserves league since 2007/08 and the third time since Football League clubs were excluded from the Premier Reserve Leagues in 2006.

The Blues fielded a very young side with subs Lewis Acott, Jide Maduako and Jack Marriott all making their reserves debuts. Schoolboys Acott and Marriott are amongst next season's new intake of full-time scholars, while Maduako is a current first year. Brian Murphy, Shane O'Connor, Tom Eastman and Jaime Peters were the only players involved with first team experience.

Meanwhile, Town legend Terry Butcher has confirmed that released academy defender Josh Meekings is amongst his potential summer acquisitions at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, as revealed by TWTD last week.

Butcher says no deal is imminent but that centre-half Meekings is “one of many names” recommended to him, probably by his old team-mate and current Town U18s coach Russell Osman. League Two Torquay United are also interested in the 18-year-old.

Reserves: Murphy, Bennett, Whight (Marriott 70), Jones (Acott 80), Eastman, McKeown (Maduako 60), Peters, Hourihane, Burke, Tiofack, O'Connor. Unused: Cropper, Scotcher.

I know nothing other than what's in the story at the moment. For about the first time this season I didn't know anyone who was going.

According to the updated table on the website linked above, Southend beat Watford 3-0 today, so we are champions - good stuff from the youngsters.

Yay open top bus parade before the PNE match. Seriously though winning any trophy is nice so well done to the staff for turning the reserves around

Murphy kept a clean sheet then. I expect we might see him in goal for the final two games so Jewell can take a look at him. He can't do much worse than Lee-Barrett recently!

The way it is going, our first team will be playing Luton very soon. This last week has nipped my positive outlook to shreds.

We shouldn't be too negative, as Norwich and Swansea are near the top of the table. Don't forget that since Jewell joined us we have beaten Derby, Sheff Utd, Cardiff, Scunthorpe, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Bristol City and Doncaster twice. Jewell has only spent £150K + a loan fee so far, so there is every reason to think we can dowell if he is given a transfer budget anywhere near as big as Magilton and Keane had!

mark that is why we will never go past mid table we may have beat all the lower half teams u mention but when it comes to top sides we lose ,norwich qpr watford reading pompey swansea forest milwall hull i`ll stop there and jewell can dust down the trophy cabinet for the mighty reserve trophy

paulnstar - you write "we will never", but Jewell has only been in post three months so give the man a chance!! I think his wins at Cardiff and Burnley were pretty impressive too, so what's to say we can't do well after a summer of transfer activity?

Anyone that thinks our squad of under performers can do anything is seriously deluded, players like Norris, Leadbitter, Kennedy, |Priskin, Scotland, will never produce anything, we are mid table cets agin next year, I fear.

Do me a favour Whoppit! We've been beaten (comfortably) by two teams still going for automatic promotion. We all know we are not there yet, we're mid table, how can this change the optimism Jewell has brought with him since he joined?!

Good news.

Have season ticket sales surged this morning on the back by any chance. It's just PJ's budget is probably gonna be influenced to some extent on hom many punters sign up.

Still very good news to lift a trophy.
