Town Chasing Nosworthy
Town Chasing Nosworthy

Town are amongst a number of Championship clubs chasing Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy. The 30-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Sheffield United, looks set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

Brixton-born Nosworthy began his career with Gillingham as a right-back, making his senior debut in 1998.

His performances for the Gills impressed former Blues boss Joe Royle, who targeted the defender when he allowed his contract at the Priestfield Stadium to run down at the end of the 2004/05 season. However, Sunderland, who had been promoted to the Premier League, won the race for his signature and the 6ft tall defender moved to Wearside instead.

Nosworthy quickly broke into Mick McCarthy’s team and made 32 appearances in his first season at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats were immediately relegated with a then-record low total of 15 points.

The following year under new manager Roy Keane Nosworthy reverted to centre-half and became a key member of the side which won the Championship at the first attempt, winning the club’s Player of the Season award and jointly picking up the North-East Football Writers' Player of the Year gong.

The Londoner remained a regular for the next season and a half in the Premier League but his opportunities were more limited once Steve Bruce took over as boss.

Keane had by now taken over at Town and in the summer of 2009 became the second Blues manager to try to sign Nosworthy but the player was keen to stay in the Premier League at that stage of his career.

However, in February 2010 the man nicknamed Nuggsy joined Sheffield United on loan, remaining at Bramall Lane until the end of the campaign.

A season-long loan back with the South Yorkshiremen followed in 2010/11 during which time Nosworthy made 31 starts and one sub appearance before he returned to Wearside early with the Blades’ relegation all but confirmed.

The defender, who has a year left on his Black Cats contract but is likely to be available on a free transfer, qualifies for Jamaica via his father but despite a couple of call-ups is yet to win an international cap.

An experienced right-sided centre-half is very much on manager Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list with Gareth McAuley departing at the end of his contract. Nosworthy’s history as a full-back may also be an added attraction with the Blues short of cover.

No Thank you :) much prefer a younger more talented CB in the name of St Ledger this kid is proven at championship level and hopefully help us tighten up at the back.

I would like to see what Sheffield United regulars thought of him last season before casting judgement.

He clearly has promotion credentials when he came up with Sunderland as Player of the Year but that was some time ago.

Just had a look at the Sheffield United version of this site.

They are laughing at us signing him.

You guys who are saying that Nosworthy would be a good signing - Have you actually seen him play recently? Do you know anything about him at all - other than his name?

Because if you had seen him play I really don't think you'd have this positive opinion about him. Ask ANY Blades fan what they think.

I'm one of milder critics of Nosworthy, believe me, but even I would have to admit that the guy is a liability. I've never known a player stir so many emotions amongst the home fans. I mean, here's a guy who will prefer to try and do a Cruyff turn in his own penalty area, whilst being hounded down by opposing forwards, rather than clear the thing to safety. Here's a guy who is frequently the wrong side of his attacker - or simply in the wrong place altogether.

I can honestly say that, had it not been for Nosworthy's alarming defending, we would probably have taken at least another 4 or 5 points this last season.

Sunderland don't want him - even WE don't want him. But some of you here seem to think he'd be a good addition for Ipswich? I'm amazed - but I shouldn't be because you've obviously not got a clue how bad this guy is.

Be careful, very careful, what you wish for in this case.

(And good luck next season btw - it's about time you lads made a comeback).

Hoping this is just one of "them", i.e. available fits a position we need, so automatically he will be linked

God, no. My Sheffield United supporting in-laws' have been banging on about Nosworthy all season - their views of his ability are very similar to THR's above.

As a member of the worst keystone cop defending I have seen (Bramall Lane this season), no thanks.

utter garbage...
here we go..another summer of dissapointment...
to be even linked with this player who many at Bramall Lane see as one of the big reasons for relegation is a sign of the times at FPR..
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

People moaned when RK tried to sign him!! 'A Sunderland reject' was the cry!! And that was a couple of years back when he was decent.

Anyone else think all of this speculation in the press and all the leaks about overrated players like Sharp and donkeys like Nosworthy might actually be a clever smoke screen for us signing some decent players, quietly in the background...no thought not!

I am on the moon with Elvis, Hitler and the guy from Police Acadamy who makes the funny noises and I've just seen Clegg hand over a wheel barrow full of cash to a short northener and a premiership has been!

I will also be consulting Mystic Meg on our future transfer dealings as she will talk less s**t than than is about at the moment.

Cant help but think why do we always chase religated defenders all the time? even St Ledger went down and we would love him. An sheff utd defender in a season when they were shyte is in my opinion a pretty poor choice, but probably accurate as to where we really are at this present moment in time.

Quite a lot of negative postings on here. I would like to see Nugsy here - very experienced and the Sunderland fans like him so what's not to get excited about??

Nosworthy is far better than calamity Delaney! I'd get another young-ish centre half who scores goals from corners to partner him and that way Delaney does not have to start, thus saving us a lot of mistakes.. Have a look at some of the league 1 teams who don't make it up through the play offs and steal their players, i.e Peter Clarke if Huddersfield don't make it and why your at it Jordan Rhodes back!

I thought Chambers was outstanding for Forest the other night against Swansea. Never going to happen but that's the sort of centre half we need.

He is a good Championship defender with plently of experience.
He could be a free and is still only 30 and has 3-4 years of good football in him.
Big, tall, strong and fearsome. Just what we need!
A good signing if we make it.
