Town Chasing Nosworthy
Town Chasing Nosworthy

Town are amongst a number of Championship clubs chasing Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy. The 30-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Sheffield United, looks set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

Brixton-born Nosworthy began his career with Gillingham as a right-back, making his senior debut in 1998.

His performances for the Gills impressed former Blues boss Joe Royle, who targeted the defender when he allowed his contract at the Priestfield Stadium to run down at the end of the 2004/05 season. However, Sunderland, who had been promoted to the Premier League, won the race for his signature and the 6ft tall defender moved to Wearside instead.

Nosworthy quickly broke into Mick McCarthy’s team and made 32 appearances in his first season at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats were immediately relegated with a then-record low total of 15 points.

The following year under new manager Roy Keane Nosworthy reverted to centre-half and became a key member of the side which won the Championship at the first attempt, winning the club’s Player of the Season award and jointly picking up the North-East Football Writers' Player of the Year gong.

The Londoner remained a regular for the next season and a half in the Premier League but his opportunities were more limited once Steve Bruce took over as boss.

Keane had by now taken over at Town and in the summer of 2009 became the second Blues manager to try to sign Nosworthy but the player was keen to stay in the Premier League at that stage of his career.

However, in February 2010 the man nicknamed Nuggsy joined Sheffield United on loan, remaining at Bramall Lane until the end of the campaign.

A season-long loan back with the South Yorkshiremen followed in 2010/11 during which time Nosworthy made 31 starts and one sub appearance before he returned to Wearside early with the Blades’ relegation all but confirmed.

The defender, who has a year left on his Black Cats contract but is likely to be available on a free transfer, qualifies for Jamaica via his father but despite a couple of call-ups is yet to win an international cap.

An experienced right-sided centre-half is very much on manager Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list with Gareth McAuley departing at the end of his contract. Nosworthy’s history as a full-back may also be an added attraction with the Blues short of cover.

Gaga - got to sat Paterson is a great shout. What's happened to him ??
Everytime I have seen him play he has looked a very good player. Would work well with Wickham IMO

Its amazing what a stir lazy journalism can create. I think the headline states "a number of championship clubs".

Also amazes me that everyone seems to know how much PJ has to spend, role that Clegg plays, players we have spoken to etc etc.

We are sure to be linked with a host of others and I am sure it will create the same reaction by everyone.

The best transfer deals are those with no rumours and just done, the joys of the internet!! Also, do people have to mention the Dark Still. He left the building in January.

I am optomistic that PJ will get the players he wants and will mould a team. We all have to do our bit and get behind and support the team with our feet and voices.

COYB.

PS, Tyson on a free would be a cracking bit of business. He refused to sign a new contract at Forest.

Tillz9 - I believe Patterson has had a few injuries this season. That said, Burnley have largely done okay for goals without him this season and baring in mind Austin will be fully fit for them come pre season, I don't really see where Patterson fits into their equation now. Other than a rotation player, but I am sure he would rather get first team football instead, plus Burnley's parachute payments dropping might be their cue to cut the wage bill in places. Hopefully so, great player!

Warky - great shout with Tyson too. I noticed he is out of contract this summer too, and his pace would be a massive asset as we simply don't have enough pace in the team right now. Still think we could do with someone to give tall centre backs something to worry about in the air along the way too - I believe I heard Helguson is out of contract this summer and yet to sign a new deal at QPR for instance. PJ is sure to be relying on bosmans over the course of this summer.

I had to sign up and comment, i'm a Blade and would SERIOUSLY warn Ipswich off Nosworthy (Notworthy / Bamby on Ice / Bombscare).

In 22yrs of watching the Blades Notworthy is without doubt the worst defender i've seen pull on a red and white shirt (and theres been some horrors). He'll make 3 or 4 glarring errors per match, he must have cost us 10/15 goals last season, he can't head the ball, can't pass and is totally inept at passing.

All i can say to your Tractor Boys is pray this doesn't happen, think of your worst defender ever, times it by 10 and you've got Nozzy, he's blinking useless.

Carling - what a testimonial !! - still it won't stop some of these over excitable charlie's almost having an or#asm over the possibility of signing him - as you can see from some of the previous posts. God forbid please - and keep us at least partially sane.
