Chopra at Portman Road Today
Chopra at Portman Road Today
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 10:19

TWTD understands that Cardiff striker Michael Chopra will be at Portman Road today to complete the formalities of his move and if all goes well to sign on the dotted line. The Blues and Bluebirds have agreed a £1.5 million deal for the 27-year-old frontman.

Town, who previously targeted the former Sunderland and Newcastle man during Roy Keane’s time in charge, are understood to have turned their attention back to Chopra late last month after having a £2.3 million offer for Doncaster striker Billy Sharp turned down.

An initial offer of £1 million was turned down by the managerless Welsh club but a subsequent £1.5 million offer in the last couple of days was accepted by the play-off semi-finalists.

As is their usual policy, the club are remaining tight-lipped regarding the situation but we expect the former England U21 international to be at the club today to continue talking terms and to undergo a medical.

The one-time Newcastle trainee, who is contracted to Cardiff until 2012, scored 11 goals in 28 starts and 11 sub appearances during 2010/11 despite being in and out of the side due to injuries.

Overall, Chopra, who also had loan spells with Watford, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley before joining Cardiff for the first time from Newcastle for £500,000 in June 2006, has scored 65 goals in 142 starts and 20 sub appearances over his two permanent spells and two periods on loan with the Welsh side.

In July 2007 the 5ft 9in tall frontman joined Roy Keane's Premier League Sunderland for £5 million, rejoining Cardiff permanently for £4 million two years later after successful spells on loan in the second half of 2008/09.

Meanwhile, striker Connor Wickham suffered an ankle injury in training with the England U21s this morning after a tackle by Manchester United new recruit Phil Jones but the problem is not thought to be serious.

Not my first choice but a proven finisher for £1.5? Get it done. Let's get Haroun in too and things are beginning to look up.

Cant complain at that, proven at this level, hope Wickham will be around to partner him.

Most importantly it may shut some of the whingers up!!

Two of St Ledger, Pearce or Ingimarsson would be good.

Chopra would be a fine addition to the team. Feel with Chopra, the emerging Wickham, the retiring Scotland and the wannaleave Priskin that we might have enough up front to make us competitive in the league. Sign him up and lets start concentrating on the midfield, defence and goalkeeper......

Things are starting to look more promising now.

Bluearmy - good point. For the money, I can't see us getting anyone of similar quality, at least not from within the UK. Alongside Connor I think he would be a fantastic addition and hopefully teach Murray a few things along the way....or possibly young Mr Rhodes if Connor does move on...

@lunatic38 makes you wonder how much we'll get Sharp for next year?

Brilliant news and I hope this comes true. He had injuries last season and probably lost a bit of focus but he is a quality player and Jewell will get the best out of him. The first of many I hope
