Brown Linked Again
Brown Linked Again
Sunday, 26th Jun 2011 16:57

Town are again reported to be amongst the clubs chasing out-of-contract former Portsmouth midfielder Michael Brown. The Blues and West Ham are said to be the leading contenders to sign the 34-year-old, who was also linked by last weekend’s tabloids, having been the subject of TWTD Message Board rumours for a number of weeks.

The combative midfielder started his career with Joe Royle’s Manchester City, spending time out on loan with hometown club Hartlepool, Portsmouth and Sheffield United while at Maine Road, before joining the Blades permanently in January 2000 for £400,000.

It was at Bramall Lane that the 5ft 9in tall midfielder made his name prior to a January 2004 move to Spurs.

After two years at White Hart Lane, Brown joined Fulham, then in July 2007 current Town assistant manager Chris Hutchings took him to Wigan. In August 2009 the midfielder signed on at Pompey before leaving at the end of 2010/11.

Brown is said to be weighing up which of a number of offers to accept with a one-year deal understood to be on the table at Town.

With the wages West Ham have been offering he'll probably end up there.

totally agree with you manualthetisfanclub, we need to look to the future. i think we now have enough experienced heads in the squad and would much rather see some younger, more hungry players come in e.g danny green, jason pearce(now of portsmouth i know)

Well, the squad has certainly lacked an old talentless thug since Ben Thatcher left.

I'm also fed up with us being linked with every old has-been journeyman that's available : yet ... didn't most people here vote for just one of them as player of the year last season? Even though he wasn't our player?

Although I don't necessary disagree with the above posts, I do think at 34-years old he has the xperience that we are crying out for - particularly in midfield. The failure to sign Derry last season was a huge error IMO - and this type of player can be valuable whatever the age. However, as someone else said, young, hungry players may also be the way forward.

In any event if West Ham are interested he will end up there, so hopefully PJ has other targets, as it seems to have gone a bit quiet - particularly as the players are due back this week.

What are we trying to do here? Build a football team or do a remake of Dad's Army?

Hard up? Penurious? Distressed? Embarrassed? Stoney broke? On the rocks? In Carey Street?"

Surely we can do better than this guy?..would prefer to see us going for a decent league 1 midfielder in his mid-20's ala Matty Holland when we signed him from Bournemouth..easier said than done though I guess.

I am slightly concerned now we are moving into a team of mercenary's. Wickham will go, pay back Marcus, and we will get a team of people looking for their next job. Disastrous if we go for Michael Brown. Young blood needed.

I am usually pretty upbeat about potential signings but this is probably my least favourite of all the players we have been linked with. Campo or Thatcher spring to mind.

Build for the future, too old, was a good player 6 or 7 years ago. We don't need him...move on!!

We don't need this guy. Would prefer to see a combative 20-21 year old who is developing his game. Need a bit of strength and height in our midfield too. Kilkenny would have been a much better signing than Brown if we were looking for a player of that ilk.
Starting to wonder if we are going to do what we always do- miss out on loads of talent= get desperate= get a whole bunch of loan signings in a week or 2 weeks before the season kicks off.
IMO we are going to struggle next season unless we can get in solid replacements for MCauley and Norris. Mac in particular was massive last season- at times he seemed to be defending on his own. We can't expect our defence and midfield to be anywhere near strong enough at the moment to cope with the teams around us.

Lets try to get our facts straight as Town fans. So far we have signed
Andy Drury (Non-League), Ingimmarrson (free and nearly retired), Ellington (free and hasn't done much for 4 years) and Chopra (a quality signing).
Chopra and Wickham up front will be good. As potent as any partnership in the Championship. But where will the supply come from? Grant Leadbitter? And our defence next season??? No recognised right back (AGAIN!!!), loss of our 2 main players. We NEED PLAYERS AND WE NEED THEM NOW!!! Its time to wake up and smell the coffee!! Promotion? If you compare our squad against others in the division then we are looking at relegation. Time to sell Wickham quick before we have to sell him whilst moving into League 1!!!

I have to say, my heart didn't jump for joy at this story, but that's all it is at the moment, just paper talk. Who's to say that Paul Jewell wants him. In PJ we have to trust.

Hope that this story isn't true.
I really don't think we will go down. We are good enough to avoid relegation by a clear margin this season.
We have Carlos Edwards as a rb,- he is fine in that position. Some might argue that he gets knackered if he plays too many games but until we get a replacement he will have to play every game.
Replacement for Gareth?? We already have Ingimarrson. Once again, it might be asking a lot to make him play every game but thats what he's paid for. And Drury can replace Norris in midfield. He's got young legs and runs well.
Our team at the moment-
Fulop (ABL in reserve)
Edwards, Ingimarrson, Smith, Delaney (Peters in reserve)
Carson, Leadbitter, Hyam, Martin (Drury and Healy in reserve)
Wickham, Chopra (Scotland, Ellington, Pisskin in reserve)
I can't believe that with these players we will be relegated.......

Brown would be a very good signing for us exactly what we need to allow Leadbitter further forward and the freedom to play . Exactly the role Derry did for QPR last season .
And to those saying give youth a chance Hyam was taken apart last season against old heads (Derry at home) in the centre of the park which was why he was dropped and then not used by either manager after ,he will be a good player but not ready for this league yet for a whole campaign .
And to the team with Edwards and Delaney at full backs -dont make me laugh !!
