Jewell: No Scotland Approach From Wednesday
Jewell: No Scotland Approach From Wednesday
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2011 09:09

Town boss Paul Jewell says he has heard nothing from Sheffield Wednesday regarding their interest in striker Jason Scotland, despite their chairman Milan Mandaric confirming his club's interest in the Trinidad and Tobago international. Scotland looks likely to leave Portman Road this summer with the Blues manager having signed Michael Chopra and Nathan Ellington and confirming that he’s on the lookout for a third new frontman.

Jewell says the Owls are yet to speak to him about the 32-year-old: “That’s news to me. I had no idea of interest in him from Sheffield Wednesday.”

Despite his chairman's comments to the contrary, Owls boss Gary Megson now says his club isn't interested in Scotland after all: "I don't know where that came from."

The Town manager says a third new forward was always in his thoughts even prior to Connor Wickham moving on: “We’re looking for another striker. I’d like four strikers. We’ve got Jason Scotland here as well [as Chopra and Ellington] and Tamás Priskin too. If one of those goes I’ll bring another one in. If no one goes I’m still looking for another striker.

“Just because Connor’s left, it doesn’t mean we’ll have to buy another striker — we were going to get one anyway.”

Jewell says Town have heard nothing from Bursaspor regarding keeper Márton Fülöp, the Turkish side now having completed their signing of West Brom keeper Scott Carson: “I didn’t know anything about it. There’s been nothing official.”

The Liverpudlian currently has no bids on the table for any current members of his squad: “We haven’t got any offers for any of our players. I’m not kicking anybody out the door, I’m more interested in bringing people in.”

Speaking yesterday morning, Jewell was expecting academy second year left-back Joe Whight to put pen to paper on his two-year contract later in the day: “He hasn’t signed it yet, but the only reason he hasn’t is because I haven’t been here and I think that will be done today.”

Can't see anyone at Scotland's level wanting to pay his wages. I suspect he'll end up out on loan with us footing a large proportion of the bill. Priskin is probably in a similar situation. However I still think he could do a good job for us. He will never be a prolific scorer but his movement and runs can open up space for others in the same way that Beardsley worked with Lineker in days gone by although perhaps not quite on the same level!

Sorry guys but keep our best younsters

We have just sold our best, the 4 best players of last year have left the club and we seem to be going for journeymen and signing them on 2 year contracts

Only bright thing so far is Cresswell, but how long before we sell him and Carson, we seem to buy players for the future and then sell them

Mid table as I see no reason for the players we have got in turning us in to Champion or even play off team

Very pleased with PJ here. Have been saying for ages that the better clubs have FOUR senior strikers - two as back up on the bench in case we need to change things. Great news that a further striker will be signed. I still think replacements for Norris / Bullard are a must, along with a RB and CB. Next few weeks will be interesting!

if priskin could finish like scotland and scotland was as mobile as priskin and they both had the hunger for football that scotland has for food then i'd keep them both

Seems a bit soon to sell Chopra or Ellington!

Its been stated before by some and I have to say I would much rather Scotland stay. Agreed he is on the heavy side but at the end of the day he scores goals. In a struggling team last season he scored 10 goals whilest having to plough a lone furrow most of the time up top with very limited service. I still think with another man up with him, better service and the extra confidence from that he could get close to the 20 he used to get at Swansea. He is getting on a bit so maybe only this season he could achieve that feet so I see no real plus to getting rid of him if he is happy here.

he scores goals because he is the only one there who can! thats how poor we have been last season.
i hope he goes but if not would be a great replacement for strikers that get injured. and would be stiff competition!
i wonder if we will go back in for sharp????

I do believe PJ will go for more of a target man striker (Ched Evans). Am sure he would love to get either Scotland or Priskin away but the lack of interest is in-surprising I guess... Neither are good enough to play week in week out for us...

Clegg's fault.

He is good enough, but if we sell priskin we will have the smallest strikeforce in the Division. If we do sell Scotland, buy Billy Sharp, or Ched Evans failing that.

I still think Scotland can do a job for us in a 442. Not mobile enough to play as a lone striker but probably wouldn't need to be anymore following the arrivals of Chopra & Ellington.

£3.5m is a lot for any player at this level and I would be disappointed if we spent that much on Billy Sharp. That sort of money could be better spent elsewhere...

Mr Scotland, lose a couple of stone, get FIT, then we will see a potential 20 goal a season striker. Simples!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Scotland's main problem last season was little or no service at times.

StochesStotasBlewe added 09:59 - Jul 3
DiamondGezzer, agreed, but he needs to be more mobile, not such a lard arse.
