Gomez Leaves Town
Gomez Leaves Town
Tuesday, 5th Jul 2011 15:56

Town fitness coach Antonio Gomez has left his job at Portman Road to take up a similar role back home in Spain. Gomez, who also worked with Liverpool and Sunderland while in England, joined the Blues as part of Roy Keane’s backroom team in April 2009.

Gomez said: "I've been very happy at Ipswich and have really enjoyed working with the players and the staff here.

"This is a personal decision for me rather than anything else. I have just got married and my wife Natalie has a good job in Spain. I have been offered a fitness coach role at a club back home and the timing feels right to go back to Spain.

"I'm going to miss everyone at the club. I was made to feel very welcome here from the first day I arrived and it's difficult to say goodbye.

"I spoke to the manager before training on Monday and he was very understanding about it. I felt quite emotional during the session, knowing I was moving on.

"I want to say thanks to the manager, the staff, the players and everyone at Ipswich and I hope the club has a very successful season and goes on to win promotion to the Premier League."

Blues boss Paul Jewell added: "I've enjoyed working with Antonio and I'm disappointed to see him leave us but understand his reasons and I'd like to wish him every success in the future."

Gomez is the second fitness coach to leave the club this summer, Simon Thadani, who had been with the Blues since George Burley's time as boss, having been amongst the backroom staff who moved on at the end of the season.

Not a massive surprise, and I wish him well.

Although it's not an ideal time for him to leave, pre-season is where where fitness coaches earn their crust. Hope PJ can get somebody in soon.

Best of Luck Mr Gomez! Very good fitness coach on all accounts from players and voices coming out the club and clearly valued since one of few kept from the Keane era as well as having worked at Liverpool, important we replace him as soon as possible especially since Thandani left too.

Fitness pre-season is cruicial. Also, little oddities where a new fitness guy comes in, and those subtle differences can lead to injuries if players have been used to a certain regime, the body doing something very slightly different 'can' lead to little niggles.

PJ can do it.

He's good for a few sprints and push-ups.

Not necessarily after dinner of course

On every new save I have with Ipswich on Football Manager, Gomez never wanna negotiate a new contract with me after the first season, maybe it IS realistic... :L
well well, hope you get a fine life in Spain Antonio, you've served our club well

Not ideal timing though - as players report back from pre-season training.
