Jewell Expecting Double Signing On Monday
Jewell Expecting Double Signing On Monday
Saturday, 23rd Jul 2011 12:00

Town manager Paul Jewell says he is hopeful of making two further additions to his squad on Monday. Those players are likely to be Fulham keeper David Stockdale, who will join on loan, and Arsenal striker or wideman Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

Speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw at Southend, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on specific names for fear of jeopardising the deals: “I don’t want to say anything which might upset the clubs we’re dealing with.

"I’m not trying to be evasive but hopefully we’ll have two new players in the building on Monday.

“I have to be respectful. I’ve been in the game long enough and don’t want to say something that people could take offence to and change their minds. But I’ll be disappointed if we don’t have two new players available for the Colchester game.

“One is a loan and one is a permanent signing. When I got on the bus today, as far as I was aware, fees were agreed. Nothing official, but I think I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t progress over the weekend.”

On Thursday, the Blues were linked with a loan move for Stockdale, 25, and with a £1 million permanent deal for 20-year-old Emmanuel-Thomas.

Stockdale seems certain to be the loanee and Emmanuel-Thomas would appear to be the other expected addition, although one report in the local press in South Yorkshire claims Town have confirmed their interest in Ched Evans, but this may just be a reference to Jewell’s comment earlier in the week that Evans is “on the list” when he also said no bid had been made for the Welshman.

Emmanuel-Thomas has not been involved with the Arsenal first team squad in pre-season, but scored two goals in a 9-0 reserves victory at Hastings on Tuesday, having previously netted once in a 3-0 win at Woking. One report claims Burnley and Portsmouth have also had offers accepted by the Gunners.

Leeds were also interested in signing Stockdale on loan but are reported to have been unable to agree a deal with the Cottagers. Swansea recently made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the former York and Darlington man on a permanent basis.

Town are likely to have to pay a loan fee for Stockdale, who was named in two full England squads last season, while Fulham have also insisted on a recall clause.

Two excellent signings if they happen. Emmanuel-Thomas is a bit of a loose cannon, but can be brilliant on his day.

Hope its Emmanuel-Thomas and not Evans.

But I do agree with Chiddley, its about time we got a right footed CB in

Don't see the point in the goalie but Emmanuel Thomas will add pace that we lack as well as competition with Carson and Martin for the winger positions.

As long as it's not Evans/Sharp/Hulse!

If it's Stockdale and JET then I'll be over the moon but yes, a defender is definitely a prority. I still feel though that we have the basis of a really good team that will evolve over this coming season and the next. Bring on August and booooooo to the doom and gloom brigade!

If we are having to pay a fee for Stockdale, why should there be a recall clause in his contract?

In my mind these will both be good signings. Now we need at least two new defenders, one centre back and one right-back, because Carlos Edwards in my mind should be a winger. We need one more striker in my opinion, someone good quality to go well with Chops who is unsuprisingly scoring well already. Maybe another central midfielder too with attacking and creative flair. They should also be able to score and supply the two strikers. I think the versatile Emmanuel Thomas could fill that role though. With all of that we should be ready for the season ahead

I think the goalie is as high priority as any, Fulop has really lost his way and as for alb i wouldnt trust him as third choice keeper let alone first choice

After going to Southend last night and seeing a disappointing and unconvincing display by Flapper Fulop and Slowcoach dont jump Scotland the sooner that Stockdale and a Striker arrive at the club the better. Also can't see Bowyer and Leadbitter playing much as a centre midfield pairing as one or the other will be suspended. The only bright spot last night was the performance of Lee Martin imho.

Let's hope this actually does happen..been too many false hopes over the last few weeks.

PJ is quite rightly keeping his cards close to his chest..been far too much speculation in this player and then that.

We seriously need to sort the defense out - hopefully Stockdale will be the start of that.

agree with spookster13, shouldn't be a loan fee if they want a re-call clause unless its a small fee per game or something. Think goalkeeper is definitely a priority, cant rely on fulop and lee-barrett if we want to get promotion. They've both made awful mistakes pre season continuing on from last season..

Stockdale - If we are really bringing in a goalkeeper on loan, there are a few questions to answer. Firstly, will Fulham have a recall clause? Is it with a view to a permanent deal or is there no chance of that? Will we be paying a loan fee? Will we sell Fulop while he still has some transfer value or let him draw big wages for another year then leave on a free?

Emmanuel-Thomas - If we really do sign him that would be massively exciting. Fingers and toes crossed on this one. He could be the sort of player to ignite our season and to bring the fans back to Portman Road.

Evans - I think we do need a target man and Ched is still young, so I would like to see him come here. However, if he comes Monday instead of Emmanuel-Thomas that will feel a tad disappointing I guess.

For the last 12 hours or so i have been one of wonkyzombies booooo boys I've been hacked of fed up and thoroughly depressed even today i have commented on how Evans should put up or leave but now i'm almost happy.I cant see this story being released without foundations that were more than firm as it's to close and it would'nt surprise me if one was confirmed over the weekend ala bowyer the only thing is I thought stockdale was a certainty for leeds so maybe its JEMT and a defender or,and i say this with caution JEMT and BULLARD.

Like others I won't believe it until it happens as we have had too many false dawns. Happy with Stockdale but not happy that we can lose him after a couple of weeks of the season with the callback clause. As for JET well for me the jury is out crap some weeks excellent at times. Suppose a million is good business but worry about his temperament. Feel for PJ as he has inhertied so many players that are not up to the mark although he stupidly gave ALB a contract - unbelievable. Some will say ALB played well before the Norwich game but for me he was never convincing and third choice is about right for him. Centre back absolutely crucial now and we still have no pace something we also desperately need. Where is the playmaker in team - lots to do PJ good luck you will need it.

We have saved alot in wages since June 30th with all the players we released ,our ambition or the owners ambition is about to become apparent , Clegg is worrying me by his silence is he still at the club ? PJ seems to be doing everything ? Bottom line we need players badly , Marcus Evans needs to realise that we all want 30,000 in the ground paying at least £900,000 every home game not 15,000 bringing in £450000. Time for this club to show its ambition whilst extremely grateful for Mr.Evans for saving us in our hour of need , he now needs to assist his investment .The next 2 weeks are in the managements hands , i hope to God it starts with these 2 quality signings on Monday followed by a quality midfielder and a right footed centre half .

Does this mean Fulop would be sold? It would be a massive risk relying on an onloan gk who could be called back at a moments notice.
