Town Again Linked With Shrimper Grant
Town Again Linked With Shrimper Grant
Saturday, 23rd Jul 2011 17:21

Town, Hull City, Bristol City, Barnsley and Brighton are all pondering a move for Southend midfielder Anthony Grant, according to a report this afternoon. As mentioned in last night’s match report, the Blues showed interest in the 24-year-old Shrimper last season, having been frequent visitors to Roots Hall with youngster Kane Ferdinand the initial subject of their attention.

Londoner Grant came through the ranks at Chelsea where he made only one first team sub appearance. While employed at Stamford Bridge the 5ft 9in tall midfielder spent time on loan at Oldham, Wycombe, Luton and Southend, before moving to the Essex club on a permanent basis on a free transfer in August 2008.

Town made an enquiry regarding the former England U16, U17 and U19 international last season, according to the local Southend press.

defensively-minded central player Grant, who made 45 starts and two sub appearances in 2010/11, scoring eight goals, has one year left on his contract at Roots Hall and the League Two club would almost certainly have to listen to any offers which might be forthcoming.

Elsewhere, released winger Reggie Lambe is on trial at Gillingham, having previously spent spells at Southend, Newport County and Bristol Rovers.

he is a defensive midfielder though. We need a player who can get their foot in and sit infront of the back four, apart from hyam we havent got this and i dont believe pj has greath faith in hyam so could be a good signing!

This guy is very decent, seen him a few times and has always looked very good. Bit concerned at the lack of height though. At Cambridge, we already looked alarmingly short of an aerial presence, a 5ft 9inch midfielder is not going to improve that aspect. Like I say though, handy player

Not sure what to think would be a good signing I guess.
I know other Championship clubs are intrested but the thing that makes me think is he's been in league two for a while and its only know people are intrested.

A bit strange but worth a punt. Must be alright seeing he was once at Chelsea and played for England youths.

This is the sort of link I like it makes more sense than a goalkeeper on loan who would rather be else where. A very good player and would be a player brought in with a view to the future. As for the 2 on monday I have niggling doubts but hope it happens.

Blue4life : - My thought [ hopefully wrong ] was, with Burnley and Portsmouth also after JET, that having a mad moment he might not sign for the best club in the world - he might choose one of the other two. Also, as we were at Roots Hall the previous evening, I wondered if discussions concerning Grant had been verbally completed then, but accept your comment with thanks.

"defensively-minded central player Grant, who made 45 starts and two sub appearances in 2010/11"

Doesn't that need a capital letter for defensively?
