Jewell: Stockdale Signing Not End for Fülöp
Jewell: Stockdale Signing Not End for Fülöp
Thursday, 28th Jul 2011 10:00

Town manager Paul Jewell says the season-long loan signing of David Stockdale doesn’t mean Márton Fülöp’s time at Portman Road is set to come to an end. The Blues boss believes the additional competition for the keeper’s jersey is healthy and is something he wants to replicate throughout the squad.

Jewell says he is not actively looking to move Fülöp on: “Not unless something comes up. David hasn’t been brought here because Márton going. We want competition. You can’t just have one or two people for every position. What we’re after is competition for places and he’ll bring stiff competition.”

Fülöp, who signed from Sunderland for £750,000 last August, has only a year remaining on his Town contract — in common with a number of other players - and the Blues boss says nothing should be read into talks about new terms for the Hungarian not yet having got under way.

Earlier in the summer, Bursaspor showed interest in the 28-year-old but the Turkish side ultimately signed Scott Carson from West Brom.

Jewell admits that the 24-hour recall clause included in Stockdale’s deal is a gamble but believes it is one worth taking: “It’s a bit of a risk we’re taking but we feel it’s about competition places and he’s a quality goalkeeper.”

Tuesday’s abandoned game at Colchester was a match of few chances but Stockdale showed why he was called into England squads last season with a superb second-half save from Anthony Wordsworth.

The Town manager was pleased with that stop and the former York and Darlington man’s overall performance: “It was a terrific save and his distribution was good.

“He gives us competition for Márton and Arran. We’d like that competition throughout the team and we’re still trying to improve the squad.”

It might not mean the end for Fülöp, but it puts Justin Lee Collins further from the sticks, and that's GOT to be a good thing.

Stockdale will start, otherwise he'll be back at Fulham within 24 hours of the season starting.

COYB!

Keane always liked having 3 keepers, but I thought PJ said he was happy just having 2?

He doesn't rate Fulop but PJ has man management skills unlike his descendant before him!

The fact Fulop hasn't been offered a new contract speaks volumes though. PJ said he was unhappy with the McAuley/Norris situations he inherited so i would expect contracts to be offered this summer to anyone he wants to keep.

Jewell has played this right by basically saying "prove me wrong to Fulop"

Stockdale will be the number one as Fulham will want him to play games and that is one of the reason they would let him go.

Fulop will leave is an offer comes in or he will leave for free at the end of the season, plus if Stockdale is called back we still have 2 keepers.

Can see ALB being the number 2 as Jewell gave him a new 2 year contract

Competition for places.... aside from RB, where we've been without since Fab retired

Good good! There needs to be competition our players have been complacent for to many years. Maybe they'll play better now as they no if they play bad PJ won't have them keep playing like other managers!

So have talks got underway for other players whose contracts run out next summer, such as Leadbitter and Priskin? Personally, I would sell all three of them if reasonable bids came in. If their contracts run out, that is another £5.2M spent on players who leave for free. Ipswich cannot keep doing this!

As others have written, there cannot be real competition for places as Jol said that Stockdale needs to go to a club that guarantees first team football, so if we drop him they will recall him.

I've heard good things about Cody Cropper, how far away is he from the first team? He'd be okay for cover wouldn't he, in the way ALB is?

Shame ,just when I thought things were looking up by Signing Stockdale. Don't worry David flapper won't be much competition for you.I think that flapper will move on as I think Wrighty is still training with us and with Websters connectitions he will be offered a short term contract. Also think that ALB is not as bad as some people think, it's nerves which get the better of him on big games.

yes, we can, we account yearly, not three yearly, so the fees will have been written off when the contracts got signed, then offset against tax for ME group businesses. Were not a stand alone entity now, were part of the ME Group remember.....

As we paid a fee for Stockdale services I am pretty sure the agreement is they can only recall him if an injury happens to their first choice keeper.....other that it is up to Stockdale to prove he deserves to be number one and not get it just because we are scared of Fulham terminating the loan.....

Players have their value based on how they perform rather than transfer fees. The fees are an illusion anyway as their wages are more relevant to the cost to the club.

Of course if we have the chance to sign a top keeper or a top player in any position we must leap at the chance even if it means other players end up being reserves. With a loan keeper we can't risk having only one other in case he's recalled.

The saddest aspect is that if he plays really well he's more likely to be recalled... We can't exactly ask him to start flapping when we have a strong lead ;)

Big gamble on Stockdale - if he is recall and if Fulop is signed that only leaves us with ALB, who IMO is one of the worst keeper in the league.

If stockdale is recalled then i have no problem with fulop between the sticks, but if he gets injured or leaves then i would rather see paul jewel in goal then alb

Neither Fulop or ALB are up to it IMHO.
