Town have made an enquiry to Saturday’s friendly opponents Wolves regarding their versatile defender Richard Stearman. The 23-year-old’s opportunities at Molineux look likely to be limited during the season ahead with manager Mick McCarthy having signed Roger Johnson from Birmingham for £4 million earlier this summer.

Wolverhampton-born Stearman started his career with Leicester, making his debut for the Foxes in 2004.

Four years later, having been a regular in the Leicester side for the previous three seasons, he joined his hometown club for an undisclosed fee.

A member of the 2008/09 Wolves Championship-winning side, £1 million-rated Stearman primarily plays at centre-half but also at right-back, both areas where the Blues currently need cover.

Last season, 6ft 3in tall Stearman made 32 starts and four sub appearances, scoring one goal, largely covering for injured skipper Jody Craddock, who has just signed a new deal at Molineux.

An England U17, U18, U19 and U21 international, Stearman, who is contracted to Wolves until 2014, was linked with a switch of allegiance to the Republic of Ireland, the country of a grandparent’s birth, earlier in the year.

Why all of a sudden do we get Delaney knockers on here. At Colchester when he came on he was streets ahead of Tommy Smith and could not be accsued of hoofball. PJ hopefully is teaching him to pass out of defence as Ingimarsson did all night.

wolves added 10:53 - Jul 28 Good luck!! 1m? i presume this is a joke? seem's we paid 1.5m 3years ago for the player and have helped progressed his career from low-mid champ standard to premier standard he is likely to be our first choice cb alongside roger johnson for the new season so i cant see why he'd want to drop down a league or why we'd sell (regardless of the price) but i still cant get over 1m price quoted, hilirous stuff i tell you!

churchmans added 13:12 - Jul 28 i aint wrong WOLVES you went up when you had money and even though we are krap i think that you struggle beadly every year in the prem and i aint seen any mayor signings to keep you up . as for stearman being good for us! look we want to go up and when we go up we would like at least half of our players to be able to compete in the prem! what im saying is we need to sign players that can do a job in both leauges and i dont think stearman(sounds like chewing gum)is the man

SteveB added 14:32 - Jul 28 Not going to happen. Churchmans...Wolves went up with a young team pilfered from the likes of Grays, Luton, Plymouth, Scunthorpe. They cost a bit, but they weren't huge signings. Stearman is now halfway to being a good defender....but you would do far better to look for a young defender for £500K and make him into a multi-million pound player, rather than trying to spend a good few million for the near-finished product. Stearman will be in England's squad soon, there's no chance of him being sold, or of him going to the championship.
