Jewell Continuing Search for Signings
Jewell Continuing Search for Signings
Saturday, 30th Jul 2011 18:16

Town manager Paul Jewell says he’s still looking to add to his squad, despite having made seven signings this summer. A central defender remains his main target, having lost Gareth McAuley, Troy Brown and Tom Eastman at the end of the last campaign and having added only Ívar Ingimarsson.

Jewell, who dismissed links with Wolves defender Richard Stearman, said: “We’re still looking. There are a couple of key areas we need to address - we need another centre-half. I’m happy with the signings we’ve made, but like every manager it’s an ongoing thing.

The Blues boss reiterated his desire to have players fighting for inclusion in his side: "We want competition for places all over the pitch and there are one or two areas where we are a bit short yet.

"Ideally we want two players for every position and that's what I have been working on. I've been trying to get in another defender over the last five or six weeks and we thought we had a couple but it's not quite happened yet, so we're still looking."

Should have offered Troy Brown a better contract rather than the reduced terms one he was offered. Afraid this may come back and bite us on the bum.

still no holding midfield player, good enough at the club, this was highlighted in 2days game, This is a must with a rightsided defender also needed.

How about Khizanishvili or Upson? - they're available on frees according to the PFA website. Mind you so is a versatile central defender/centre forward by the name of J. Scowcroft. Might be worth a punt...

I see we are being linked with Koumas again along with Sheffield Wednesday. CB is a must though. There is surely some decent options on a free this year ?? Personally I would like us to go in for Kilgallon (if he is a right sided cb)

Said it before but I'll say it just once more - Spector, Upson & Koumas - all on frees - go get 'em!

Couple of people have mentioned upson but he is left footed as well! Let's concentrate on the positives in the friendlies not the what ifs and buts!

are you dreaming?! Upson is an England CB, he was on 50k per week at West Ham, would expect him to get 40k per week at worst from someone...... totally out of our league financially..... Spector was on 18k at West Ham so hes a maybe at best...... doubt it though.......

A centre-back and right-back have to be the priorities, or perhaps someone who can play both positions.

Troy Brown has dropped to League Two and while he may have been OK for cover, we can easily bring in someone of his ability or better I think.

I aknowledge 1st that upon has not been officially linked with us, I see that people say we have no chance, he is a Sudbury boy with family in Ipswich, when I worked in town center I saw him at least once a month in town with partner, he may have been on big wage but fact is, power is coming back to clubs, alot of high earners out of contract, can only accept what they offered

rosseden -

Firstly nothing wrong in dreaming, a pastime that most of us fans seem to enjoy!

Secondly factor in the fact that there are no transfer fees involved and a two year contract on higher wages for a player like Upson can be a comparable cost to a transfer fee + lower wages for a less well known and less accomplished player.

If Upson thinks he can still command £40k - £50k per week then of course he is not for us. That said the closer we get to the start of the season and the longer players like him remain unsigned and available on free transfers then perhaps the more realistic they will be about the wages they can command.

Any alternative suggestions for potential signings you would like to share with us?

Still think PJ will exploit the loan system as well, maybe with a view to making those loan signings permanent signings in the January transfer window.

In PJ we trust!

'A central defender remains his main target'

Good to hear.

Happy with the signings so far but disappointed we haven't seriously tried to seal the Bullard deal with the Wickham cash. I also feel that Troy Brown and Tom Eastman should have been encouraged to stay and given a decent chance, I disagree that we will be able to replace these guys easily - young decent centrebacks aren't cheap, unless you're getting them from ITFC!

i dont have any pearls of wisdom im afraid, but i do know we have a wage structure and i would be 99% sure Upson wouldnt fit into it...... i think he'll be with a lower / mid table prem side this year at worst.........

Upson's not a Sudbury boy.

My mistake he is from eye, I think Ched Evans is now likely to be off the list

Yes Ched Evans doubtful.

Rosseden - 'lower /mid table prem side' - Isn't that where ITFC want to be next year? I doubt we will get there with what we've got in our defence at the moment.

rosseden added 21:21 - Jul 31
Id love us to be that by next year yes. However, this year we aren't that and one of them will not miss out on upson i doubt
