Jewell Targeting Three More
Jewell Targeting Three More
Tuesday, 30th Aug 2011 16:07

Town boss Paul Jewell says he is hoping to sign three more players with the transfer window due to close on Wednesday evening at 11pm. Defenders remain the Blues manager’s priority as he looks to take his summer signings beyond the 11 he has already made.

Jewell said: "There is some wheeling and dealing going on but it's out of my hands at the moment. We are waiting on two Premier League clubs about two players, both loans.

“They have their targets and if they can make that work, then they will look at freeing up the players we want. If they don't get in players, they won't release them.

"We have three targets in mind. Two are defenders, one isn't and we will have to see what develops over the next 24 hours, or when the loan window opens."

Stoke’s Danny Collins is likely to be one of the defenders, while a right-back could also be amongst those targeted. The other player is likely to be either a wide midfielder or goalkeeper, the two other areas where Town currently most need cover.

Jewell says he has received interest but no bids for any current members of his squad: “We have had a couple of enquiries for our players but no more than that and nothing that is of interest to us.

“In this mad world we live in, we might get something and I think you can have too many players in one position. But I am more interested in getting a couple of players in and I am under no pressure to get rid of people.”

Jason Scotland, who is believed to be back home in Trinidad at present, is thought to be interesting Coventry, Birmingham and Middlesbrough, and we understand Blackpool have also been eyeing the 32-year-old frontman.

Portsmouth could also make a renewed bid for skipper Grant Leadbitter having had an initial offer turned down earlier in the month.

It's about getting the right players in not just get players in. Right back has to be the main aim.

I hope Scotland is getting in some long runs on the beach and not lounging around supping cocktails.

Sorry, Jason. Just realised you've got two World cup qualifiers coming up. I think I'll shut up till the transfer window closes.

Iagree with Huddy. If you aim high and nothing less, you might well achieve it. We have some great players. Just the fitness and best plays to sort out. It would be a miracle to take this team of individuals and make them one player better...a team.

Hope we're not going to start bringing in too many loanees..don't mind the odd 2 maybe 3 but when there's 4 or 5 I start to get worried about how committed some of them really are.

We do need to start off-loading some of the dead wood too (Leadbitter).

Has the Portsmouth/Leadbitter link any foundation or is it just wishful thinking?

Pay Portsmouth to take Leadboots away!!!
But on a serious note, loving all this transfer activety, but that'll be an entire new 1st team and most of the bench potentially made up from new signings.
Which when you look at it doesn't sound at all that crazy when you think that apart from the players who have come through our youth system, only Jaime Peters remain from when Magilton was here two and a half years ago and he was a Joe Royal signing. But there was some serious dross brought in by the last manager and some not too good signings by Magilton so the club has needed a good clear out!!!

buryblue77 - Magilton made some of the best signings of the recent managers - e.g. Walters, Norris, McAuley (did he also sign David Wright too?). Unfortunately non of those 3 are here now, almost entirely due to the Keano mismanagement, but all of them would be an improvement on what we've currently got.

Can someone explain to me how signing 32 year olds and borrowing journey men from other clubs is building for the future!

Ask your selves this, would you rather loan in players that are better than we have? Or would you rather us stick with what we have got? I understand how the transfer system works and I would rather us loan players in to get us through to jan. After all, stockdale and Andrews are loans as was jimmy last year and gio prior to that, I think in all of these cases we were happy with them.

The one that 'isn't' must be a keeper otherwise he would have said 'midfielder' or 'striker'.

Fair point but what we have is not going to get us top six and they mostly sod off even before season ends. What's wrong with some younger lower league experience.

It is absolutely imperative that we sign a right full back and a centre half. I've looked at the goals again on BBC Sport a dozen times and i've never seen such shocking defending from Delaney and Edwards. Very very lucky not to concede another hatful.

Not keen on having 5 of the squad as loan signings. But we do need reinforcements.

Time for Clegg to show his worth. Appreciate we have signed 11 players to date, but mainly frees and loans. Clegg has pretty much failed where agreeing fees is concerned. It was also thanks to ME that we managed to sign Bullard. For me though we need 4 more players (not loans as we already have three which is more than enough): GK, RB, CB and a winger (assuming Murphy has been signed as a striker - if not we need a forward).
