Town Amongst Trio Targeting Dutch Defender
Town Amongst Trio Targeting Dutch Defender
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2011 10:43

Town, Southampton and Crystal Palace are all understood to have made loan enquiries to Celtic regarding Dutch central defender Jos Hooiveld. The 28-year-old seems certain to move to one of the three Championship sides on a six-month or season-long loan before the transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.

Hooiveld, who is 6ft 4in tall, started his career with Heerenveen, moving on loan to Zwolle between 2004 and 2006.

A year with Austrian side Kapfenberger followed, then a switch to Finnish side Intern Turku, where he spent two seasons.

In 2009 he joined Swedish side AIK, moving on to Celtic for £1.4 million in 2010. Having made only six starts and one sub appearance, the Zeijen-born left-sided defender joined FC Copenhagen on loan.

Despite playing 11 games, the Danish club decided against taking up an option to sign Hooiveld on a permanent basis.

It seems he has struggled to have much impact at 'lesser' clubs... Certainly benefit of the doubt if he comes, mind. COYB.

disagree, sticking to players to have already played in England or those who do play in England is a lot wiser. no room for adaptation at the moment, need to wait for the likes of Collins and Ibanez to be available. Last thing we need is someone who may not speak English very well, for example mixing up the words "my and your". My ball! And then waits for Sonko to head the ball...

boom conceded.

I think you will find that most Dutch players have a good grasp of the English Language.

was a small joke if that's allowed. main (serious) point was that of adaptation to the game and its pace. English football is like no other in the world and preferably need experience at this level.

Sign him up.

It says he is a left sided defender.

Agree with Christjant, we all know how poor scotich football is, and danish isn't exactly up there, yet he can't get a regular spot. Stick to players from our own leagues, would rather see a permanant signing for the future but a loanee with the required quality will, and lets face it DD and Tommy Smith, not much to surpass!

I don't see what the problem is with a defender's 'adaptation'. Stop the ball going past you: that's universal. You're either a defender or not. Simples.

He struggled to get a game at Celtic and from what I believe he was behind O'Dea in the pecking order.

No harm to get him on loan to see what he can do. He is 28 and coming to his peak.

leagueonescum, unfortunately defending is not that simple

Why only loans? We have three in the team - really hope Clegg can actually negotiate some fees for players today. We won't achieve a lot with a 1/4 team of loanees. Look what happened to Norwich a few years back! Yes, one or two is good, but honestly - is that all we are after?

Our history with Thijssen and Muhren should help us land this fella. Liking the sound of this one. Hopefully he has a bit of pace to accompany Sonko's muscle.

Any left sided defender to replace deplorable delaney, would be a step in the right direction.

"joined FC Copenhagen on loan. Despite playing 11 games, the Danish club decided against taking up an option to sign"

Hmmm, not convinced.

Behind O'Dea in the pecking order? Ibanez behind McCauley at WBA ? Not really selling it to me, but what do I know.

Reports from Everton that Shane Duffy, the 19 yold Irish centre back, 6'4", is about to join us on loan today. How true is the Everton report - just another deadline day cul de sac or bona fide news?

You lot are pricless.

3 weeks ago, all you were saying was "we dont have a decent scouting system set up."

Now we're after a player (who a rather shrewd mr adkins is after) and all your saying now is "Well, I'VE never heard of him so he must be useless!"

I hope he signs and becomes the next Claus Thompson!!!

Dont know anything about him, any defender surely has to be good for keeping others on their toes! at the end of the day if PJ thinks he'll do a job for us, thats good enough for me, (PJ, get Murphy on the phone to him, Celtic team mate!!)

It would simply be wrong to stick to only players who are currently playing in England or those who have previously played in England. That would be far too restrictive. We need to widen our net as far as possible and be as open minded as possible.

So what if FC Copenhagen did not want him. It could have been for a number of reasons, not necessarily footballing ones.

He is a massive left sided Dutch defender. If we get him for 6 months it could be the best thing we have ever done. He could be the next Herman Hreidarsson overlapping down the left wing - scoring and then jumping into the stand!

He would be a gamble and lack of success at Celtic and Copenhagen is a worry, but a good age and height. If others are in for him and he was deemed worth £1.4M a year ago perhaps he is worth a punt on loan with a view to a permanent move. Hooiveld in on loan and Smith out on loan would seem to be a positive step!
