Fans Re-United to Help Save Plymouth
Fans Re-United to Help Save Plymouth
Monday, 5th Sep 2011 10:22

Fans of clubs across the country are being asked to help out supporters of crisis club Plymouth Argyle in their hour of need. League Two Argyle, where Blues midfielder Jamie Griffiths is currently on loan, are in danger of going out of business with players and staff not having been paid in full for some months.

The Pilgrims’ home game against Macclesfield on Saturday 24th September has been declared Fans Re-United Day by Brighton supporters, keen to help out another club in return for the assistance they received from followers of teams around the country during their darkest hours at the end of the 1990s.

Back in 1997 the Seagulls staged the first ever Fans United Day when supporters of clubs, including Town, came along to their home game against Hartlepool United wearing their side’s colours to give them their backing and help raise funds.

To find out more about Fans Re-United Day, which coincides with Town’s visit to Middlesbrough, there is a Facebook page, while more details can be found here and here.

In addition, the Green Taverners are asking fans of other clubs to raise funds by auctioning football memorabilia here.

The latest details of the situation at Home Park can be found here, while Plymouth’s main forum PASOTI can be found here.

Good luck to Plymouth and their supporters. Notice that Ridsdale is involved in matters there. Funny how he is never far from financial disaster.

Shame some of these players who are earning absolute fortunes in the prem don't chip in..i'm quite sure they wouldn't miss the odd couple of grand here and there.

@lightningboy. Indeed, it would seem to be rare but maybe some do and just don't shout about it. I vaguely recall Titus and Kieron contributing some funding to our youth set up a few years back?

Certainly hope Argyle don't go bust, Plymouth as a city is going bust as it is, I live here and it makes depressing reading of the local rag. UTT.

Don't like to hear of any club going under, especially when I think back to our old financial position.

broomfield123 - That's the spirit.

We were lucky in the grand scheme of things (Points deductions, loss of players)

Clubs need to stick together. What if Marcus Evans did one and we went to the brink, we would have to ask for help.

I think players and clubs in the top flight should stick their hands in their pockets and help out. Players on £100k+ a week, if 10 of them gave up a weeks wage that would save that club.

Also Ridsdale should never be allowed to be involved in football what so ever. I am at a loss as to how he keeps getting chances at football clubs!

Fair point.I just said the comment to make conversation. In all honesty its not nice when a buissnes goes to the wall. At the end of the day its still peaples living weather its its the cleaner or directer ( even if Ridsdale is a c--k). Who in gods name would employ Ridsdale in such an important position.

Yet again the fans have to pay to bail out the bankrupt state of football finances. Across all the leagues there are too many competent but not exceptional players on wages that are unreasonable. Before anyone goes on at me about how Plymouth players have played for nothing ... I'm not talking specifically about Plymouth but about the game as whole. If we are heading for recession then the players and their agents have to get reasonable.

To be fair to Risdale. He no longer makes the messes. He is called in to sort them out now. He had so much experience from Leeds that Cardiff and now Plymouth owners bring him in to manage the fire sale of their clubs.
Appointing Risdale is like saying to the world "we are financially f*d"
It is a complex world and knowing just how far you can push HMRC etc and the law on trading whilst insolvent is such that Directors risk beign struck off so no one in their right minds would want to take it on unless they knew what they were doing.

is it just me or do we need one reputable club to go bust to teach everyone else a lesson? other clubs cant keep on relying on fans of other clubs or institutions to help them out. Everyone says they aim to be self sufficient, but until one decent size club goes people are not really going to take notice

I really hope Plymouth make it. This just shows what is wrong with the game today. Rather than a few quid begged from the fans (however commendable that may be) I'd rather see some of the millions gathered in from the Champions League going obligatorily to such a good cause. They wouldn't even notice it was missing. In 1986 IFK Gothenburg beat Barcelona 3-0 in the semi-final ,first leg, of the European Cup as it was then called. Their team was made up of amateurs: shipworkers, cooks and the like. How times have changed. Will we ever see those days again?

How does a club get into such a position in the first place?
Players wages?
Falling attendances?
Dumb Chairpersons?

Steve_ITFC_Sweden: The Premier League makes solidarity payments to the Football League clubs, which is similar to what you're suggesting.

The problem is that a lot of clubs just seem to want to spend more than they are earning (by the way, how are Plymouth planning on paying us for Jamie Griffiths' services?). At clubs where this doesn't happen, e.g. Leyton Orient, the owners are lambasted for not spending money on bringing in new players.

One way or another money will eventually kill the game as we know it.
Then maybe we can go back to footy as it used to be in the good old days before mega TV deals and even bigger pay packets for below average bench warmers.
I for one would welcome no live games on TV. If you want to see a game go along pay on the gate (reasonable fee) and clubs would find their level. Competitions we be just that too, competitive and not a case of who has most money.

I lived in Plymouth for 12 years and the ground then was very old and poor, the fans preferred rugby or surfing and the gates were poor. Somehow they redeveloped the ground on 3 sides and had the promise of a World Cup venue till we lost the bid. They have always sold players to survive, remember paul mariner? Too much spent and nothing left to sell, bit like we were a few years ago.

give a pilgrim a fish, he can eat for a day, but give him the means to catch his own fish and he can eat for a lifetime. Seriously, we should all get behind this.
