Jewell Confirms Blackpool Move for Scotland
Jewell Confirms Blackpool Move for Scotland
Monday, 5th Sep 2011 18:16

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that striker Jason Scotland was the subject of an offer from Blackpool just before the transfer window closed, as revealed by TWTD last Tuesday.

The Tangerines made an offer which we understand was significantly lower than the £350,000 reported at the time and while the clubs discussed a fee the player’s representatives were given the go-ahead to talk to the Lancastrian club.

But Jewell says the two parties failed to reach an agreement: “Blackpool made an enquiry and we gave them permission to speak to Jason. They spoke to his agent but they couldn’t agree personal terms.

“I’m quite happy to keep Jason here. He scored against Leeds and made the winner. I don’t have to move anyone out of the door but I think we have to be fair on people and that’s why we gave Jason permission to talk to Blackpool.

“Jason knows that and I spoke to him about it. There’s no problem and we move on.”

This makes it sound like the offer was accepted by the club.

How the hell have Blackpool managed to get Phillips to agree to sign for them, given their history of offering( by and large) much less in wages than their Championship rivals?

I thought ITFC would have accepted £350K and it doesn't surprise me if they accepted a lower bid than that. WAGES are so much more important than fees these days. If Scotland is on say £12K a week (which he may be, giving up a Premier League contract to come here), then that's £12Kx10x4 = £480,000. If Blackpool were offering a £220,000 fee say, that's £700,000 saved if he left.

Credit to Scotland though, as he looks in better shape this year and may well be a useful player for us, at least from the bench.

robdaful ,I think it is very rude to call someone by their last name and it seems that you are trying to insult our manager. Are you an ITFC fan or one of these boo boys .His name is Paul or Paul Jewell.

Better watch out Ham .... Phil!

I agree that one should be polite but I am not too sure that calling someone is being rude. Context is all important. Note the headline. I don't think whoever made the headline was being rude about Jewell or Scotland!

So Jewell 'wants' to keep Scotland, yet gives him permission to talk to a rival club, and Scotland 'wants' to stay yet enters talks with another club.

I wish football folk would stop all this billy b*llsh*t and tell us what's going on not what we want to hear.

@Arc. Doesn't mean that at all, I suspect around transfer window close, its common to talk about terms whilst fees are still being agreed to close the deal down more quickly. That must be how Miereles moved so quick to Chelsea and Crouch to Stoke, the terms were all but sorted, just waiting on clubes to agree

@Garv. Thats the nature of football. What if Blackpool had offered silly money, then tough for PJ to say no. And links into point above, Scotland might want to stay, but if the club want to sell because the price is right, then having already started to talk personal terms speeds up process

Transfer deadline games me thinks. We let Scotland talk to them while fee is discussed in the hope that Blackpool get desperate and offer more money. Seems sensible if we don't need to sell?

We need Scotland. PJ signed Ellington in the Summer - a player who has scored only 9 goals in 4 years. Scotlands goal scoring record looks sensational in comparison. Sadly for Jason he was constantly played in an isolated striker role by PJ - woefully out of his favoured position alongside another striker. When playing in a 4-4-2, Scotland scores goals. Hopefully PJ will have finally realised this. After 8 months in charge I really do hope so!

Glad he stayed. Looks lean and mean but I don't know about a hungry machine, well not on his wages anyway !

since we are supposed to have one of the higher wager bills in this division Id say its a pretty "safe" bet to allow one of your players to speak to one of the renowned "meanies" in this division, when it comes to wage structure, in the fully knowledge that its unlikely that said player would be prepared to take a wage cut to join them.

After all even Jon Stead declined a move to Blackpool when they were in the Premier!!

Jewell gave them permission to speak to Scotland but he rejected personal terms (or so I hear)

oldbri -

Are you sure? I bet you use to say Keane instead of Roy. And people tend to say a players last name.

But if thats not enougt I'll start saying Paul or PJ in future.
