Jewell: We Need to Conquer Lack of Belief
Jewell: We Need to Conquer Lack of Belief
Saturday, 17th Sep 2011 09:10

Town boss Paul Jewell says it’s not surprising that his squad are lacking belief after the heavy defeats to Peterborough and Southampton but knows they’ve got to overcome "that fear" sooner rather than later. Earlier in the week, midfielder-turned-right-back Carlos Edwards said he felt that there was a lack of belief amongst the players.

Jewell said: “I think when you lose games five and seven that’s going to be the case. Belief is confidence, they’re the same thing.

“If Carlos doesn’t believe, he might be leaving himself out!" he joked. "But it’s not just at Ipswich that there’s a lack of belief. That happens in football. “

The Blues manager feels that lack of confidence was evident at Bloomfield Road: “You could see that on Saturday.

“I watched the Blackpool game again on Sunday morning. In the first half there was nothing in the game, then in the second half, after they scored, we probably didn’t believe we could get back in it, even though we had three opportunities when we were two goals down to get back in it.

“We’ve got to get over that fear, " he added. "We’ve got to get over the lack of confidence bit because we’ve got good players in the team.

“But we’ve got a lot of new players. I think we had eight new players plus Jimmy in the team on Saturday and it’s going to take time to bed things down, for people to get to know one another’s games. But we’ve got to do that sooner rather than later.”

As for Edwards, there has been much discussion amongst supporters on whether the 32-year-old ought to be switched to the right midfield role but the Blues boss says he currently has no plans to push the Trinidadian further forward: “You’re always a better player when you’re not in the team with fans and you’re always a better player when you’re playing in a different position.

“I didn’t see a massive backlash when he went to right-back from wide right from fans. The fans are entitled to their opinions.

“I see the players day in and day out and at the moment I think Carlos is our best option at right-back, but it is an area where we need to improve and need to get someone in to give Carlos a bit of competition for the place.

“He says there’s a lack of belief but sometimes there’s a lack of competition in a position and it might not be doing him a favour.”

One of the players Jewell was likely to be eyeing when he watched Sheffield United lose 3-0 to Huddersfield on Tuesday was Blades right-back Matt Lowton.

Yes paul, must do this, must do that..... just get on and do it then and stop spouting off what you need to do, what the players need to do etc. etc. etc.

There will be a storm further down this thread, but fundamentally he is right on the confidence and on Carlos. You don't get over two results like that quickly. He knows that we need a right back, but not the wrong one in quickly.

oh Harry, these players don't overly care about defeats they get 10k a week regardless, they just need to man up and get on with it... the whole club does...

I agree with the money comment, Marcus claims he's backing,so give them double or quits in the next month or so to get the confidence up or until we can get more players in in january.

And some loans made permanent

I think most fans agree that Carlos Edwards is currently our best option at right-back, as he has done better than expected there and is clearly ahead of Jamie Peters and Jack Ainsley. However, I think what most fans are surprised about is that a new right-back hasn't been bought into the club either in the January transfer window or over the summer. As we have conceded 16 goals in 6 games so far in the league this season, that opinion is likely to be expressed all the more.

Mark I thinks its fair to say probably 13 of those goals have been down to central defenders. Carlos had a superb game at Blackpool.

Garv - I think you are right about centre backs being to blame, I just meant when we let lots of goals in people will question the defenders generally. If Town were winning matches and defending well overall, people would not question Edwards and all would be rosy.

Wearing the shirt should be motivation enough, unless the players brought in and that RK signed were more interested in banking the cash. Promotion is the aim and I have yet to be convinced that the current squad has the desire and drive to meet such a challenge. I know that there are at least 12 other clubs with the same aim, but most do not have the backing of a wealthy owner. I fear PJ is taking the club backwards and I it worries me where this great club will be come the end of the season.

well not suprise they lack believe they can win , just had to look at the midfield before the game started the players them selves prob thought that they couldnt win with that line up, it was the same for the southhampton match for crying out loud, and the leeds match for the first half, untill you put pace wingers on the pitch and drop leadbitter and play andrews and bullard as the center pairing then we wont win bugger all, we have to go out thinking we can win from the start with the line up PJ puts out, unforchantly unless you do that against coventry we wont win, you have to be postive in the formation and the best players to fit that formation, not whos my best players and lets cobble a formation to suit as that will never work, just had to look at the players who played against the gunners at portman road, it was the pair scrappings of a ipswich team pushed together as that was all we had, they held the gunners multi million pound team and eventually won,

bringing in loan players to fill a desprate hole is ok eg collins but wtf did we get murphy for, and und up playing him for the sake of it as he is on loan, thats no good, and wtf was carson against blackpool, or did he get a bit peed of in training so you left him atr home to suck on his dummy, gorden bennet we cant afford to do that we aint man united, he is the best winger we have, and wiuth out him we will find it hard to make progress in games.

like i said befor i dont give a hoot what payers do on the training field that doesnt give you 3 points on a sat afternoon, you can be the best player on the training pitch but if you dont produce the goods on a sat then you are worthless.

bit like a F1 driver who sticks the car on pole for every race just to bin it into the gravel trap on the first corner of ever race, thats no good to man or beast is it.

so PJ you have the players now at your disposal well mostly, so put out you strongets squad for coventry and go from there and stop mucking about with 4 5 1 at least try 4 4 1 1 with attacking in mind, and use bullard and carson and andrews to full extent, even bring on o conner for left wing or push creswell up there with kenady at left back both are more than capaple to peform there, and drop murphy as he is usless, also leadbitter he dont deserve to ware the shirt.

rant over

I can't believe we're still hearing this motivational psycho-babble six games into the season. They are professional footballers for crying out loud! I know literally thousands of kids who would sell their mother to be in the same position. Get out there on Monday night and play some bloody football like you mean it!

I find it very sad that people on here are calling for the manager to be sacked just six games into the season. Who exactly do they want in charge here; Mourinho? Ferguson? As far as I know they are happy where they are so let's back Paul Jewell. There are FORTY games to go this season; I for one am not writing off the season in September and no-one else should be either.

Yes we have heard all the back the manager cr.p, I backed Keane and where did that get us?
Dont want to moan for nothing and if we lose a game to a better team fair enough but we lose because of yet another POOR MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We really need a win against Coventry or else we go into the tough games (West Ham, Midborough) with zero confidence = zero points!!! I would prefer to see Sparky playing at RB, Carlos is still very much a winger in my opinion.
All fit and well i'd play something like this:

Murphy Chopra

Martin Bullard Andrews Jet

Cresswell Collins Ingy Kennedy

Stockdale

Or this:

Chopra
Jet
Martin Bullard Andrews Carson

Cresswell Sonko Ingy Kennedy

Stockdale

I backed Keane too but he was given almost two years and things were getting no better. Jewell has only been here eight months and needs to be given time to turn things around; it doesn't do clubs any good to keep changing managers every five minutes. I saw Jewell's appointment as a long term one; there are no quick fixes.

I'm not saying PJ is perfect; he is playing too many central midfielders and not enough width; he also needs to make subs earlier when games are going against us, but I really do believe he will take us forward; however patience is the key.
