Jewell Confident He Will Be Given Time
Jewell Confident He Will Be Given Time
Wednesday, 21st Sep 2011 12:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell is confident that club owner Marcus Evans will give him the time required to build a successful team at Portman Road. The Town manager says he has developed a good rapport with Evans since his appointment in January.

Jewell said: “I think I’ve maybe got more of a relationship with the owner than perhaps Jim and Roy had. We involve one another when making decisions and I’ve got the confidence that I’ve got a long-term objective here.

“If at the end of the day that doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, but I think the owner sees the plan and the long-term objective exactly the way I see it."

The Blues boss says the pair talk daily: “It’s not as if he’s out every two minutes backing me. Obviously he’s a very private and quiet man, but we speak on the phone regularly, two or three times a day, and I think that’s an important dialogue to have going on.

“I think we’ve got good players, it’s a fantastic football club with great supporters. The only thing that hasn’t been firing on all cylinders is the team, and it’s my job behind the scenes to get it right.

“I’ve been here eight months now and given a fair crack at it, I’m 100% convinced that I’ll get it right.”

Meanwhile, Jewell feels that last week’s Aaron Cresswell compensation tribunal wasn’t the best use of a day, even if the Blues came out of it with what appears to be an excellent deal: “I have to say four hours sat around a table going backwards and forwards was a waste of everybody’s time.

“I think Cressy is going to be a good player for us. Since he’s come here he’s improved an awful lot but he’s still got a long way to go, but we’re pleased with him.

“There have to be more of the likes of Cresswell out there and it’s our aim to get players like that to add to what we’ve got. It’s important to get young players.

“Cressy loves Ipswich, he loves coming here. It’s a big step up for him but he’s taken to it well after a shaky start, and that’s the type of player that we want.”

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce is reported to have been at Monday's game against Coventry and to have asked about Cresswell. However, the Birkenhead youngster, who turned 21 in December last year, is too old to play for Pearce's side.

Elsewhere, midfielder Andy Drury says he feels he wasn’t really given the opportunity to impress prior to making his loan switch to Crawley Town, for whom he scored on his debut on Saturday: “I got the move to Ipswich, and I didn’t play two games in the row there. Even if you are Lionel Messi you are not going to be at your best not playing two games in a row.

“There were a few games [in which] I played well, I didn’t feel I was given a chance but the manager has been good to me to let me go out on loan.

“I will just work as hard as I can here and if it reminds him I am a good player and I go back there and he wants me, then great. If not, I will keep playing football somewhere else.”

Drury’s 93-day loan to the Red Devils includes a clause which could see his move to the League Two club become permanent in January.

The 27-year-old joined Town for £150,000 from Blue Square Bet Premier side Luton in January.

Feel sorry for Drury, perhaps a victim of the Bullard situation.

Can only be a positive that ME is in regular contact, means he must still be focused on the club if taking time to speak to PJ everyday!

And rightly so. Deserves the time to get it right and I think he will. Too many impatient knee-jerk reactions these days.

KEEP THE FAITH. COYB!

It's so good to have a proper manager looking at the long-term rather than a two year promotion plan which put massive pressure on the players. We need to look to the lower leagues, bring in younger players and build for the future.

Interesting to note that Jewell speaks to Evans "two or three times a day"! I thought Magilton spoke to Evans most days and Keane hardly ever spoke to him, which tells its own story.

As for Drury, he was a bit unlucky but with Bowyer and Bullard coming in the competition is a bit too much for him.

PJ is the man to get us up - either this season or next. Played some good stuff v Cov. Chops and Scotland linked up well and most of the team look up for it, despite the tough start to the season. Keep the faith.

Any manager needs a minimum of 2 years, I hope PJ gets that and a lot more. Feel sorry for Drury as he wasn't given a run but presumably PJ worked with him daily and didn't fancy it. At least he was cheap so no harm done, wish him well in the future.

Ah ha!! So PJ talks to ME every day. When you talk to him next time Paul, could you ask if he'd lend me a fiver?

Paul Jewell is very focused on the job in hand and it will take time. Marcus Evans is wise to keep him informed of all develoments and visa versa. I am confident Paul Jewell will succeed with Town and then our only worry will be keeping him!

Like the job Jewell is doing but to be honest I think Marcus made a big mistake in getting rid of Jim in the first place - we played some cracking stuff under him at times..still think we'dve had a couple of decent seasons under Magilton rather than the wasted 2 under Keane.

Barring Jim/Burley coming back ,I think we've got a good man in place.

It's great that nobody is panicking (or hardly anybody), despite some exceptionally indifferent results. Jewell probably believed he had better cover than he did in the centre-back position, but Southampton and Peterborough showed him otherwise. Now we have Sonko, Collins, Ingemarsson and Delaney as fourth choice, which is fine.

Other than that, we are moving in the right direction. We've moved towards a 4-4-2 and away from the lone striker disaster, and suddenly strikers we know to be quality players are beginning to look like it.

The worst thing we could do now is to make a change of manager and go back into uncertainty. The management team is a team, and it's quite right that everyone from the top down, including ME and Clegg are an integral part of it, rather than remote and above it, as was the case with RK.

The other thing is, the football we played on Monday was pleasing to watch, it wasn't just the result!

@Lightningboy - I have to say I agree with you 100% I think Jim was moving in the right direction, and by far better than Keane.

Give PJ time to build a good squad and I think we can go up, stay up, and maybe push for europe again!

PJ is very much the diplomat, something neither JM or RK were. i think when youre dealing with someone who isnt from a football background you need to have that diplomacy, which is why i think PJ will last for a long time, i can see ME & PJ talking a lot leading to SC being marginalised at some point though and possibly replaced. Which would be a shame as hes just starting to get the hang of it by the looks of it.......

i also think for all RK's faults he did bring some good things too, i think the changes to the training ground, the back of house stuff is definitly helping for the longer term, probabaly about the only money he spent well......

Agree PJ needs time. Hope the performance against Coventry was the start of a new ITFC. Don't really agree with above post saying we played some cracking stuff under Jim. The fantastic performance against Bristol City apart (was it 5-0?) but that was prior to Marcus Evans era. I can remember towards the end of Jim's reign, we were getting very little entertainment - (except for his very last game v. Norwich). The RK era was just a big expensive mistake, so may as well put it down to experience and forget about it

In the business world of ME he is only looking for winners. If PJ starts to faulter then I dont think he will be here as long as RK.
Also why would ME look at someone to build a team for the premiership? Surely someone to get us there and then look at the situation.
For me the jury is still out on PJ, coming from liverpool he may have the gift of the gab, but the proof of the pudding is in its eating.

I am glad he will be given time and he needs it, after all when Evens took over back in '08 we all thought that millions would be invested and we'd be in the Prem within two years. hen Keane came in and we thought yep this is it, we'll get there now and all he did was take us backwards, so all in all it's a clean start from this season, forget the few months that Jewell had in charge at the end of last season. That was just about him assessing the situation and looking at where we needed change, and by bringing in 12 new players his opinion was pretty much most of it. So if you look at i that way it's very much early days in Jewells Tenure and hopefully a long one it will be!!

I think PJ Is doing a fantastic job so far & he got good players in & now looking for young players & we will go up in the next 3 years maybe this year but the championship is really tough this year & all I want is better performances & better position will do me. Cresswell really good & need a RB Like him plzz there must be one. I Hope we get Andrews & Collins in Jan transfer & keep Murphy for rest of season on loan & buy in July transfer. Middlesbrough will be tough & Think a 1-1 draw or a 1-0 win will do me. Keep up the good work ME PJ & SC I have faith in you all.

Good news. Although interesting that this essentially means Clegg is running the business of ITFC rather than acting as go between for manager and owner
