Jewell Waiting on Sonko and Martin
Jewell Waiting on Sonko and Martin
Thursday, 22nd Sep 2011 10:00

Defender Ibrahima Sonko and winger Lee Martin are doubts ahead of Saturday’s trip to take on Tony Mowbray's Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. Sonko hurt knee ligaments during Monday’s 3-0 victory over Coventry, while Martin has been suffering with tonsillitis.

Town manager Paul Jewell said: “Sonko got a block in on Monday and he’s jarred his knee a little bit and we’ll have to see how he is for the weekend. We’ll make a decision on that as late as possible.

“He tried to carry on but it wasn’t a knock he could run off. He’s a big strong lad as everybody knows but sometimes it doesn’t matter how strong you are, you can’t run them off.”

Sonko’s obvious replacement Ívar Ingimarsson is back from his thigh injury and making progress: “Ívar played in the reserves, I think that was the second reserve game he’s had.

“He’s getting stronger each and every day but it’s game time that he needs now. If people are fit and healthy they will be considered.

“Damien Delaney came on the other night and did very well, so there are a few players who think they should be in the team.”

The Blues boss says there are no new injury concerns: “Mark Kennedy’s not fit, he’s still got a bit of a calf strain, but everybody else is OK.”

Midfielder Lee Martin is back after his three-match ban for his red card at Peterborough — and long returned from his stint training with the U18s - but has been under the weather for the last couple of days: “Lee’s been training with the first team for the last three weeks but he’s had tonsillitis this week, so I don’t know whether he’s going to be available for selection.

“But he’s trained very well and, like all players, if they train well and knuckle down, will be considered.”

Jewell says there will be no more loan moves in or out before the weekend.

This will be a tremendous test, as M'bro have not lost yet this season, but with the evident confidence now running through the team, it will be good to see how much progress has been made since those horrible defeats of a few weeks ago.
Suppose a draw would be a good result, but wouldn't it be lovely if we won.
COYB !!! PS: it was just great the other night seeing all the players having a good game.

“Damien Delaney came on the other night and did very well,"

You are joking!

Hope Sonko makes it because he could make all the difference.

Kennedy is undoubtedly a classy player - but since he joined he has spent about 75% of his time injured
I fear Ingimarrson is heading the same way

Jabberjackson

I think you will find he has spent 75% of his career injured. He makes Darren Anderton look like Mr Motivator.

@Hampstead - I'm not Delaney's biggest fan, but he did at least make a couple of quality tackles on Monday night and performed decently, something that Jewell clearly saw.

We go to Middlesbrough without too much pressure on us as most people expect a home win, so perhaps we could surprise a few people? It will be tough of course, but in the Championship games can go either way. We managed it last season, so could we do it again?

It's good news that Sonko's injury isn't too serious. He has looked a brilliant signing and I will soon be worrying that his contract is up next summer! If you gave me the chance to swap Sonko for McAuley, I am not sure I would you know.

I agree with AbujaBlue re: Delaney. Made some crucial tackles in the box from what I saw on Monday. Give the guy some credit, even if it is just for one game.

@AbujaBlue - the minute he came on we looked shaky. He is so limited it's unreal.

I've said this since day one and nothing he does has changed my mind.

I'm sure a substitution in the defence pack will cause an element of unsettled play for a period. He did put in some good defensive work in his time on the pitch. Delaney, like the rest is a confidence player and would and should feel uncomfortable after some tragic defensive matches. Hopefully he will improve after Mondays match and his contribution to a rare clean sheet.

With our wing backs (I wouldn't call them full backs) pushing forward and without a natural holding man (Andrews can play the role but is too effective going forward atm) we need Sonko to stay fit. He's a real man mountain of a centre half who should really shine alongside another quality centre half like Danny Collins. Ingimarrson (if fit) should definitely be our 3rd choice ahead of Delaney imo. Damien has the odd good game BUT he is too often a complete liability. Ditto Tommy Smith.

Collins to man mark Emnes all game, Ivar won't keep up with him.

Oddly, Boro's away record is much better than their home record, but losing Sonko would be a blow.

Could do with the man mountain at the heart of our defence at "Boro. Would like us to start with the same starting 11 as on monday.

Delaney is a complete liability....I'd prefer Tommy Smith to play rather than Delaney and that's saying something!

Glad you're not in charge mpk1111.

Delaney and Smith are both liabilities at present and I would only play either of them as a last resort!

Sonko will be a big loss if he's injured for long.

I wonder if Lee Martin picked up tonsilitis when sent to train with the kids. He better watch out as chicken pox is doing the rounds with our kids at the mo.
