Town Targeted Shelvey
Town Targeted Shelvey
Tuesday, 4th Oct 2011 09:21

Blues boss Paul Jewell has revealed that he renewed his interest in Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey last week, prior to the ex-Charlton man’s loan switch to Blackpool. Town were first mentioned in connection with the 19-year-old earlier in the summer.

Jewell said: “We tried to get the boy Shelvey here last Friday but we couldn’t guarantee him a start and Blackpool could.

“We’re looking for all types of players. You can only have five loan players in your matchday squad, so we can’t bring loads in but we’re always looking to improve the squad.”

Clubs can name five loanees from English clubs in a matchday 16 plus any number from foreign teams, including those from Scotland. There is no limit on the overall total of loan players a club can have at any one time.

Romford-born Shelvey was a debut scorer for the Seasiders as they beat Bristol City 5-0 on Saturday.

Very promising player, but please, let's stop signing midfielders now shall we?!

Everything comes from midfield. Solid defence, scoring attack, crosses, creativity, assists, possession etc... Its great to have a lot of options from midfield. Signing too many of the SAME midfielders is a problem.

I'm not sure we need any more loanees do we? Squad is already quite large and must be difficult keeping everyone happy. With the Man City youngster joining, I'm quite happy with the depth of the squad, could probably do with a few more exits. Come January, though, would like to see us sign a decent gk on a permanent deal with a view to next season, also in case Stockdale is recalled

Loans have several uses.

I think where they are with a view to buy so we get 3 months to see them then it's an excellent way of bringing in players, hopefully we can secure Andrews and Collins.

Where we have gaps (RB) then filling them with loan players to cover until a more permanent solution can be found is also useful.

Not sure about selling a half decent keeper and bringing in an (albeit an excellent) Keeper on a 24 hour recall was a smart move.

Would have been a good addition but understandable if we can't give him first team football. Good player though

No loss at all. I would question his mental strength and confidence in his own ability if he was asking for guarantees! Should have confidence he would get in team and stay there!!

Suspect Liverpool wanted him guaranteed to play games, not the player himself.
