Sonko a Doubt for Palace Clash
Sonko a Doubt for Palace Clash
Thursday, 20th Oct 2011 09:54

Central defender Ibrahima Sonko is Town's main doubt ahead of Saturday’s home game against Crystal Palace due to the hamstring injury he suffered in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Portsmouth. Blues boss Paul Jewell says there are one or two other players with minor niggles but wouldn’t be drawn on the identities of those involved.

Jewell said: “Ibrahima Sonko is doubtful because he nicked his left hamstring and there was a little bit of fluid on it yesterday.

“As we sit here on a Thursday, he’s a doubt and there are one or two other knocks and little niggles that we don’t really want to disclose. We’ve got one or two little doubts for Saturday.”

If Sonko misses out, the Town manager will have to choose between Damien Delaney, who has regularly been on the bench over the last few weeks, and Ívar Ingimarsson, who started the season in the Senegalese international’s right-sided central defensive role before picking up the thigh injury which kept him out for a month.

Striker Jason Scotland may be one of the other injury concerns with Jewell mentioning that the Trinidadian had a minor hamstring problem after the Portsmouth game. The Blues boss felt the 32-year-old looked a little tired against Pompey and could be considering giving Nathan Ellington a start in his place.

Despite the under par performance against Portsmouth, Jewell says its significance shouldn’t be overstated: “Let’s have it right, we didn’t play well the other night but let’s not make a crisis out of a game we won 1-0. Give me a few more of them and I’ll be happy.”

Town are running a ticket promotion for Saturday's game.

Let's have it right, having to read 'let's have it right' in every PJ interview is getting rather boring.

Sonko out and several players knackered, this is gonna be a very tough game.

Stick Ingimarsson on and if the guy seems totally of the pace then let Delaney come in.

No offence to Damien but who has a good game now and then and is a decent backup, but if I was Stockdale I wouldn't like to see him infront of me for 90 minutes.

Ingimarsson and Collins then surely, not 2 left footers in there again?!!

I'd hate to see us change a winning team, but if Scotland is tired just stick Priskin up there with Chopra - I'd love to see that!

think we should freshen up the line up a little .. Delaney shold play if sonko don't make it . I also think Ellington should be given a start let Scotland make an impact from the bench if fit . I also think we should freshen up the middle . Give the most suffering 1 out of the 4 in the diamond a rest and give either Carson or martin a run out at the forward tip of the diamond.

If Sonko does not make it I agree with Pazelle and definitely play Ingimarsson and Collins as this maintains the balance of the back line. Two left footed centre backs does not work as was proved many times last season. If Scotland does not make it I would give JET a go up front as this would give us some much needed height especially if we continue from the other night and play long balls up to our front men. He may even treat us to a glimpse of his trickery on the floor. If its not JET then I wouldn't complain if Ellington gets a full run out. Agree this will be a very tough match and be warned we have a very card happy referee (David Phillips) for this one.

I would start Ingimarsson in his place, definitely not Delaney!!! Ingimarsson may be left footed like Collins, but this shouldn't matter. I think we are perhaps nervous of this because we all remember O'Dea and Delaney v Norwich and then Smith and Delaney v Posh. Ivar and Danny are far superior players, it was the calibre of defender that let us down, not the fact that they were both left footed. Carson and Ellington should also come in and freshen up the side and give a couple of the lads a rest. I don't like the idea of changing a winning team but needs must

Hope he's fit cause he's quality but more because I like records and if we can keep starting the same team for like the 7th time in a row which would be nice.

I think we have the best 11 in the league at the mo but i think we lack a decent bench. Ingermarsson for Sonko is a def. I think he puts Delaney on the bench as he's a bit more versitile. JET is ok in fits & starts & i would play him upfront if Scotland cant make it.
It's going to be a long season for the over 30s so a few of the youngsters getting a game & rotating the midfield now & then is a must.
The biggest problem i feel tho is the 5 subs rule instead of 7 & a few youngsters getting experience from the bench

As someone who was on holiday at the start of the season I never saw Ingimarsson play. I quite forgot we had him still! Why was he not on the bench Tuesday? This must mean that DD is before him in the pecking order.

I agree with comments about the diamong also. Norris showed that if you keep JB quiet, quality ball to the forwards dries up. Stick Bowyer in for JB to give him a rest and let Martin have a go out on the left.

Why Delaney or Ingimarsson? Can't Wabara play there? Ideal opportunity in training to see if it would work?

Although i'm not overly critical of Delaney, he's committed and brave, with a decent vocal (ie Collins) CB beside him, I think he's more than capable.

agree with dirtyboy... Palace are very pacey up top with Zaha and Scannel so Wabara could be an option.

Like others I would prefer to maintain an unchanged team. However, let's face it we have 3 games in 8 days with an oldish team so tiredness and knocks are inevitable. Isn't that one reason why we have a large squad?

I am confident that PJ will make the right decisions here.

I do believe Ingimarsson is RIGHT footed. The thing that works so well with Sonko and Collins is one will clear everything and get his head on everything, the other is an organiser and good on the ball. Its obvious who does which job. A similar partnership was used vs Bristol with Damien and Ivar. If we put Ivar with Collins that leaves us with two organisers and not much height, I know Collins has shown he is good in the air but he certainly doesn't have the same ariel presence as Delaney or Sonko. So maybe Delaney and Collins could work in a similar way to Sonko and Collins. But then you DO have the risk of two lefties again.

Wabara in to cope with the pace of Scannell and Zaha sounds good but we all thought putting Ainsley in for Peterborough would be a good idea and look what happened there. I'd prefer to stick with experience at this moment in time, especially while we're still on this unbeaten run.

Seems Scotland will be rested so I would be happy to see Ellington come in. As bad as it sounds I still don't think JET is fully fit as PJ has suggested, so although him and Chopra sounds like a good partnership I'd rather put in a fit, sharp Ellington who impressed on Tuesday.

Midfield can stay the same as far as I'm concerned. Bowyer and Leadbitter certainly don't deserve to be dropped after Tuesday and as much as he had a poor game you can't drop Bullard because you know what he can give you. Redundant point but it would be silly in my opinion to change half the diamond anyway as some have suggested and put Martin or Carson on the left as it would completely defeat the object of the formation.

If I was PJ I would keep everything that I could the same, barring obviously injures and tiredness. No point changing formations and game plans after one below par performance.

I would like to see Ingarmarsson and Collins at the back and JET in the hole, rest one of Leadbitter or Bowyer

If Sonks can't play then stick Ingimarsson in with Collins, with Ellington and Chops up front if Scotland isn't up to it. Personally wouldn't want to change anything else if we can help it.

forgot we had ingimarsson... is he left or right footed?
also i agree that we should use wabara as he is pacey like zaha so would be a gd match.
best case scenario, sonks and collins at the back

Yeah agree with most on her. Ingimarsson to replace Sonko if unfit, Ellington to get a start with Scotland coming off the bench and i'd also be tempted to freshen up the midfield a touch, maybe giving Martin/Murphy/Carson the Leadbitter role.

If Sonko doesn't make it I hope PJ plays Ivar instead of Damo purely for the fact he's right footed

Making him fit over time

hmmm as stated already I wouldn't risk a long term injury by playing him if he is not ready. At home against this Palace side we should have enough about us to deal with them even missing Sonko. Delaney was terrible at thne start of the season but who wasn't, maybe a start and a decent performance would give him confidence. There is no way we will be able to get by with Collins and Ingarmarsson/Sonko for the rest of the campaign when you take into account age and fitness.

It's important to win this game after doing the hard work on this run at Cardiff/ Boro and West Ham. Not playing well yet bagging the points against Pompey is another good sign. Hopefully the bumper crowd and new found confidence will help see us through this one even if a few are carrying knocks.
