Jewell: Wright a Consummate Professional
Jewell: Wright a Consummate Professional
Saturday, 22nd Oct 2011 09:37

Boss Paul Jewell says he has a lot of time for ex-Blue David Wright, who is back at Portman Road with Crystal Palace today. The Town manager sold the 31-year-old to the Blues for £200,000 in January 2007 when he was in charge at Wigan.

Jewell said: “He was a good professional David. We signed him from Crewe when I was at Wigan. He was in and out of the team at Wigan and I sold him to Ipswich when Jim Magilton was the manager.

“A consummate professional, a great lad, I think he still lives in the area and I know he has a lot of time for Ipswich and the Ipswich fans have a lot of time for him.

“Like Chuck the other night, I can’t speak highly enough about him as a person and as a professional. I’m glad to see he’s back in the team and playing football and I hope he gets beaten on Saturday!”

The Town manager says Wright’s agent called him innumerable times soon after he took over at Portman Road with the Warrington-born player then out of the Eagles side, but nothing ultimately came of the contact: “He was one that came on the radar and he was really keen to do it but things happen in football and we moved on. But he’s doing really well for Palace now playing in a midfield role.”

Letting Wright go on a free transfer and not bringing in anyone at all to replace him, resulting in Eastman playing right-back, has to be the most insane thing Keane did during his time here.

He is highly rated by Palace fans. They see him now very much as a defensive midfielder, and they are more critical of both his longer passing and creative play.

Mark - I agree with you about Keane's lack of judgement.

Crazy decision to get rid of him when we obviously had no replacement lined up. We still don't have a right back on the books really (save Wabara who clearly isn't a long term option as Man City want to keep him).
