Defensive Duo Doubts
Defensive Duo Doubts
Monday, 24th Oct 2011 19:15

Defensive duo Ibrahima Sonko and Damien Delaney are both rated as doubts ahead of Saturday’s visit to Millwall. Sonko missed the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury, while Delaney was substituted with a foot problem shortly after half-time.

Manager Paul Jewell said: “We hope Ibrahima might be able to return to training on Wednesday or Thursday, I’m not sure though.

“Damien’s had an injection in his foot to settle it down and we’ll know more about him towards the end of the week too.”

The Blues are definitely without left-back Aaron Cresswell, who is suspended for one match having been sent off on Saturday, with Jewell assessing his options, who include Reece Wabara, Mark Kennedy, Shane O'Connor and Joe Whight, ahead of the game.

Great to see Whight in the squad, hope he is given a chance with Cresswell suspended, picking Kennedy would give no pace throughout the side!

Chance for Shane O'Connor to show his worth ! Ivar would be a good replacement for Sonko , would not be a worry . He is a class player and will prove to be competition for that position !

If Kennedy cones in then the system will have to change. Wabara has to be the next choice if we stick with diamond.

Is it so difficult to even get remotely close to spelling players' names right? Who the hell is ivrangerson?

Kennedy at left back and a return to old fashioned 4-4-2 please even if just for one game to get back to winning ways, because at the moment the diamond isn't working. Martin right Carson left, Chopra and Ellington up top please.

Agree with Garv - except I prefer the 'Ivrangerson' to Ingimarsson as it rolls of the tongue more fluently.

Give Reece Wabara a go be a shame not to use him during his loan spell with us

Delaney looked out of his depth again Saturday. Moves the ball to slowly and looks uncomfortable in possession. Also he got rolled by his man a couple of times by being to tight. I also thought ingimarson looked off the pace when he come on ( I know he is lacking match fitness.
What is everyone elses opinion of Delaney and Ingimarson based on Saturday?
As ofcourse we all see the game differently

If we do play the diamond formation pacey full-backs are essential, so Wabara is favourite to replace Cresswell I'd say. Crystal Palace's wingers were fast and pinned back Cresswell and Edwards so our formation was not as effective as normal, but that's not to say the diamond won't work away at Millwall. I think I'd stick with it as going to 4-4-2 means bringing in wingers, and if Carson and Martin are the options then it makes me think back to Peterborough away!

My Team for this game-----
Stockdale
Whight, Collins, Wabara, Edwards
Leadbitter, Bullard, Bowyer, Andrews
Chopra, Scotland

Don't think we should play Sonko until he's fully fit.

Shoopdelang. Spot on and that was my feedback from Saturdays match.

I would sacrifice Scotland on Saturday, have Wabara right back and Edwards at Right midfield. I would also swop Leadbitter for Andrews in the diamond position and have Jimmy next to Bowyer. I wonder whether this is the reason Jimmy has been not effective for the last two matches?

PJ hasnt been very good at giving the youngsters a chance yet, apart from Carson I don't think anyone's been giving a fair crack?
Cresswell we bought so I don't count him.
I personally rate Whight but I think Jewell will prefer one of the more experienced guys.
I guess the youngsters arent good enough yet, after all, in Jewell we trust!

If Delaney & Sonko are both unfit, then Ingimarson certain to play. If Sonko is OK I expect he'd get the nod ahead of Ingimarson. Wabara will replace Cresswell, even though he's right footed otherwise his home club might start complaining if he gets no games

Should give Carson and Martin a chance...

Please not Kennedy - my 5ft Mum is faster than him. We need to go for a player as close to Cresswell in style as possible. Jamie Clapham on a one match deal?

Why are we now calling to go 4-4-2 after one defeat? We have had a settled side for the last month and it's been working, suddenly one defeat (after a couple of changes) and you all hit the panic button. Either Wabarra or Wight at left back to replace the suspended Cresswell and if Sonko is not fit then play Ivar or even Reece. After that don't tinker with it as a starting 11. If it isn't working at half time by all means PJ review tactics and bring on wingers.

We really missed Sonko on Saturday, his presence seems to lift the team, also he is our only threat from corners.
PJ must find a place for Wabara as i do not see why we are paying big money and not playing him.

saffronblue ...totally agree stay with what has been winning us games when our two main strikers are playing .
arablue ...i think you will find we gave Carson and Martin a go against Hull,Saints ,Peterboro do not defend well enough which then leads to Cresswell and Edwards being isolated and limited going forward .
We have scored 10 goals in last 7 games against 5 sides that were in the top six and conceded 4 ,that is very good with on paper easier games to come Millwall,Doncaster,Barnsley,Watford who we will pass off the park , stop panicing and enjoy

How tall are the Millwall centrebacks? It's no use playing both Chopra and Scotland upfront together if they have 7 foot centrebacks. In this case play Chopra and JET up front with Scotland to come on as an impact player. Suggest Bullard is given a rest for a week. If Delaney is fit, I would go with him. I wasn't overly impressed with Ingimarsson whn he came on on Saturday- he looked a bit unfit and a bit adrift. Need to give Wabara a game soon, or he will be back at Man c.

The debate about 4-4-2 and diamond is (should) be a mute issue. A good team should be able to adapt during the game, not forced to play one system for 90 minutes come what may. After all 11 players on a pitch are not forced to remain in allocated areas as far as I'm aware!

blrmy - Spot on - amazes me how some teams ( most teams infact) cannot change systems during a game - These are pros and managed by pros - if one system is nullified move em around
As for Sat - Wabara at Right back , O Connor/Whight at LB and Carson on LM and push Edwards out wide Right , Leadb and Bowyer in Middle
Chops and Scots gotta start up front and with JET , Bullard on bench we can change it around ...
Has Martin recovered yet - not be seen since Pboro?

Time for Whight to be given a chance at LB.

O'Connor for me, one last chance to prove himself to PJ. He has real potential IMO & has been left out in the cold for too long. We need to blend this squad to give it more speed and urgency or we're doomed Capt Mainwaring...doooomed I tell ye!!

Infineteregress added 12:47 - Oct 25
Reckon Shane O'Connor should be given another crack at left back and, assuming we switch from the diamond formation, put Wabara in at right back, Edwards on the wing. Oh yeah and Ingimarsson and Collins in the middle.
