Bullard Confirms Dash to Ground
Bullard Confirms Dash to Ground
Tuesday, 25th Oct 2011 08:53

Midfielder Jimmy Bullard has confirmed that he was forced to abandon his car and run the final stretch of his journey to Portman Road ahead of Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace. Surprised listeners to Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch spotted Bullard making a dash through the crowds having left his car behind him due to the more than usually heavy traffic around the ground.

The Londoner, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on Sunday, was a victim of roadworks, which also held up the Crystal Palace coach, and found himself at a dead end: “It was getting close to quarter to two, the time we’re meant to be there, and they’d blocked the road off.

“For some reason they wouldn’t let me down there so, being only around the corner, I decided to just jump out my car and run for it.”

But Bullard, who later apologised to team-mates for his under par performance during the game, didn’t get in too much strife for his late dash with manager Paul Jewell saying the ex-Wigan man made his deadline: “He was there by the time expected so that’s fine by me.

“If it was just 50 yards around the corner it’s no big deal. In fact, that probably means he ran more yards getting to the game than actually in it!”

The Blues midfielder dismissed suggestions that Town's 30-somethings were feeling the pace against Palace: “When you’re towards the end of your career a poor performance gets blamed on your age. And when you’re at the beginning of your career a poor performance gets blamed on inexperience.

“If you’re not doing it out on the pitch, though, it’s because you’re not playing well. On Saturday we just weren’t good enough. Simple as that.”

And there is the difference between Keane and Jewell.

what we forget is that jimmy is a attacking midfieldplayer not a holder , he has played most of his life in that position and is a natural attacker someone who can conjur up a goal from no where . while he has to play the holder we will not see the old jimmy im afraid .

Yes Jimmy is a bit special and special people deserves special treatment and although everbody should be treated more or less the same, he is a one -off and perhaps that is the reason he can be so inpirational on the field. Should be playing further forward though and I agree with many people here, this is where he gets his goals...

What were the rest of the team's excuses?!

Think we need Jimmy further up the pitch where he can do more damage..stick Bowyer or Kennedy in the holding role..Edwards on the right wing too, give Wabara a go at right back.

Surely the team should meet at the training ground at about 10am. Have some breakfast/light lunch together, do a bit of light training - go through tactics and then travel from the training ground to the ground together. In fact in an ideal world you would spend Friday night in a hotel.

This "bring your boots" attitude is so amateurish it is shocking..........

Totally agree with @cloud66, if we're to continue with this diamond formation I would like to see Bullard pushed further forward. Maybe bowyer could move to the holding role, seems most suited to breaking the play up and putting tackles in.

Agree 100% with cloud. Jimmy is surely needed further upfield, then his goals may follow. COYB's

Big gaz67 I think you are spot on I remember arriving early to PR to see the players turning up at about 11am for a light lunch together and team talk under Burley, our most successful side since Sir Bobby. The current set up seems a bit amateurish to be honest, discipline on and off the field not what is was. Love PJ's quote though about how far he ran...PJ Gold :)

50 yd dash hey, that explains the lack of effort on Sat - can't think of any road blocked off on Sat thats not normally closed on match days. hadleigh Rd is clsoed but from the far end its more than 50yds, more like 1 1/2 miles - maybe JB ran a 1 1/2 miles, which should have taken him only just over 7 mins - just leave more time for your journey next time - or put ya kit on before you leave home

Yes, getting there earlier would sound a good idea.

I agree with the comments above about Jimmy being an attacking midfielder. As the defensive midfielder in the diamond he offers a good range of passing, but not the pace of tackling ability. Bowyer might be a better option there, although I think in due course a proper defensive midfielder with younger legs is needed. Jewell knows that and is looking for the right player, I am sure.

First time ever on this website somebody has described one of my posts as 'spot on' - thanks Algarve Fan.

algarvefan is spot on. My son is req'd to arrive 45 mins before his U16 Sat am matches, so its pretty poor that pros only have to turn up 75 mins early - even the stadium staff have to turn up 2 to 3 hrs before KO.

Agree to some extent about pushing Jimmy further upfield but what people forget is he is the one who collects the ball from the defence. I don't think anyone could really do that job as well as Jimmy so without him there defenders will be forced to play long. This also happens when teams push high up the pitch leaving no room to pass out from defence (Pompey, Palace), thats just good tactics. Not saying I wouldn't maybe try something different but Jimmy is there for a reason, when teams give us space in that area he will have a field day.

Seeing as we went six games unbeaten, we'll be one hell of a team when Jimmy starts playing football properly again!

How much does he get paid? And people make excuses because he can't get there on time. Forget the PJ v Roy debate, bottom line is surely he can turn up on time? My boss questions me if/when I am late so for me PJ should be coming down hard on him. Not good enough Jimmy - being late affected your performance. Footballers think they are different from the ordinary folk - they are not. Turning up on time for WORK should not be an issue. End of story!

jas0999 added 18:33 - Oct 25
p.s. under Jim, Joe and George (not sure about Roy), the players were arriving at 11:00 LATEST. What on earth is PJ doing allowing players to arrive so late??? No wonder we were rubbish. The more I think about this, the more shocking it is!

Hello!! It says he was still on time NOT late! Please read the report properly before slagging him off.

shaunminx - dont worry about jas0999s comments. He loves to spin a story so that he can whinge about PJ - even if it involves ignoring the facts. Indeed Jimmy was not late.
