Mariner to Take Lambe to Toronto
Mariner to Take Lambe to Toronto
Tuesday, 25th Oct 2011 13:53

Released Town winger Reggie Lambe is set to join Blues legend Paul Mariner at MLS side Toronto FC. Bermudian international Lambe left Portman Road at the end of last season.

Mariner, Toronto’s director of player development, saw Lambe score for Bermuda in a 1-1 friendly draw with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in Florida in August with the 20-year-old subsequently spending time training with the Canadian club.

Lambe, who was on trial with Newport County, Southend and Bristol Rovers during the summer, has also trained with the Bermuda Hogges back in his home country since his Town exit with their owner Paul Scope, a friend of Mariner’s, confident Lambe can do well in North American football: “I hope a deal will be done and that Reggie can relaunch his career with Toronto.

“Devarr Boyles [Bermuda FA's youth director] and Khano Smith [who played for Mariner at the New England Revolution] have spoken to Reggie and they both also believe he would do well in the MLS.

“I think the MLS would suit Reggie’s style of play and Paul Mariner is keen for the move to go ahead. He has also expressed interest in other Bermuda players.”

Lambe made four Carling Cup starts and two Championship sub appearances during his time with the Blues after coming through the academy.

“I think the MLS would suit Reggie's style of play"

Would that be a comment on the standard of football?

MLS is currently a very physical league, with a much greater emphasis on athleticism than skill.

However, the skill level is improving, year by year, and while it has some way to go, it is at least heading in the right direction.

Mariner appears to be doing a good job for TFC, unearthing some players who have been rejected by their current teams, but will fit into the style of play that Toronto FC desires, while also being able to quickly adopt to MLS.

I'm looking forward to seeing Lambe play.

TFC could use some help- they have yet to make the MLS playoffs although they have progressd to the CONCACAF Champions League quarter finals. Next game is in March- hope it is an away game somewhere warm.
