Town Linked With New Move for Doncaster Striker
Town Linked With New Move for Doncaster Striker
Thursday, 27th Oct 2011 23:20

Town are set to make a renewed move for Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp, according to a tabloid report. In May, the Blues had a £2.3 million offer for Sharp turned down by the South Yorkshiremen, along with a £300,000 bid for midfielder James Coppinger.

Manager Paul Jewell is now reported to be ready to pay £1.5 million for the 25-year-old frontman, with the ex-Sheffield United man initially joining on loan with a permanent deal subsequently completed in January when the transfer window reopens.

Second-from-bottom Doncaster, who recently appointed Dean Saunders as manager after Sean O’Driscoll’s departure, reportedly may be willing to sell Sharp, whose contract is up in the summer of 2013, in order to bring in cash to rebuild their squad as they try to avoid relegation.

Sharp has scored two goals in five starts and two sub appearances this season, having picked up an ankle ligament injury on the opening day of the campaign.

Elsewhere, ex-Blues striker Kevin Lisbie is close to winning himself an extended deal at Leyton Orient having scored four goals in seven starts and one sub appearance.

The 33-year-old signed a deal until January with the League One side in September having been released by the Blues at the end of last season, after spending 2010/11 on loan with Saturday's opponents Millwall.

A must have player if we're going to be true promotion contenders! C'mon Jewell weave some of your magic and get him in and ITFC shirt ASAP. Strength in depth with quality players is essential! COYB

No one can deny he is not a good player however i just for some reason thing he would not be right for the team jewell is currently building. I think he is too similar to chopra and over double the money i don't think it is good value. i think a taller striker who can hold up the ball to play alongside chopra would better suit the team and give an option to the midfield to pass the ball forward? I could be wrong if signed he may be great??

Not a similar player to Chopra as some are saying. He usually scores from close in and flies into the box at high speeds. Where as Chops works his way in range of the goal and places them in the net. Chops obviously can do both roles but Sharp adds serious pace. Bit of a Darren Bent-esqe striker I think.

Would be good to have him on board!...is it in case the 'off field' problems of our current strikers lead them to lose their desire to be top class footballers and need to be replaced?

@chrisw2045

You've just described Tamas Priskin.

Sharp's pretty decent, if he's keen enough then he's worth a punt - rumours were that he loves Yorkshire so much he'd rather play for York City than Real Madrid but they are just that - rumours.

Agreed he is very small and a bit similar to Chopra, but if we aren't going to play wingers then our height is less of a concern than our lack of pace.

I can't believe no-one's mentioned this but why would they accept £1.5m when they turned down £2.3m from us just a few months ago? Nonsense!

Very similar player to Chopra. Maybe could be used in rotation with him? (to help Chopra get back to full fitness?)
Why on earth would he now be worth 1.5?
