Jewell: We've Still Got a Soft Underbelly
Jewell: We've Still Got a Soft Underbelly
Monday, 31st Oct 2011 08:45

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side still has “a soft underbelly” after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Millwall. The Town manager said that although his team pass the ball around, they don’t do so in dangerous areas.

Jewell said: “I think we probably passed the ball more than them. But we don’t pass it in areas where we can hurt them.

“At the minute we want to play the game as if we’re 3-0 up. We’re not prepared to get in behind them, to turn them round. It was pretty, pretty football and they just sucked us into the counter-attack, and that’s what happens.

“In the first half there were two goals in five minutes and pretty much the same in the second. It’s a soft underbelly that the team’s got.”

In the wake of the heavy loss, Jewell wanted to pull out of a long-standing booking on Sky’s Goals on Sunday but his former Bradford colleague Chris Kamara told him it was too late to find a replacement.

The Liverpudlian admitted that he wasn’t in quite the right frame of mind: “It’s not easy sitting here on a Sunday morning after you’ve just been beaten 4-1, but life goes on.

“You’ve got to try and face the music. We start again [on Monday] to try and get a result against Doncaster. There’s not a lot I can do sitting in the house moping, I’m moping sitting on your sofa instead.”

Told he’d get the chance to watch Millwall’s goals, he added: “I’ve seen the goals, in my sleep, time and time again.”

Too slow and no plan B. Pick 2 out of of Bullard, Leadbitter, Andrews and Bowyer, but not all 4

Ryan I dislike leadbitter as much as the next person but that was not his fault I can't remember if it was the 3rd or 4th goal but colins had the player go past him because of lack of communication and he sat down before they scored how can you sit down !! As for lee bowyer where do we begin he can't get back, he leaves the left side exposed the bottom line he's past it. 4 4 2 next week. Cresswell, ainsley, sonko, wabara ... Carson, leadbitter, bullard, Edwards .... Chopra, ellington. I would drop colins for sitting down.

Leadbitter isn't the cause of our problems no, that's tactics. But to be fair, can anyone actually answer as to why he's in the team?

No pace, no creativity, no battling for control of the midfield.

Seriously, I've nothing personal against him but from an objective and logical perspective... why? Is there a reason?? Horizontal link up play?

Successfully completing a pass less than 10m? Why???

The captain issue is just the icing on the cake.

"But we don't pass it in areas where we can hurt them" - have a chat with the manager PJ - it's his job to sort that out - Oh ....

I'm beginning to worry about PJ's judgement...

“I think we probably passed the ball more than them. But we don't pass it in areas where we can hurt them."

...So why does PJ pick a player who can unlock a defence, can score from distance but only puts in 1 or 2 tackles a game in front of the back 4, and another player with average passing and a poor goalscoring record (but does make tackles) behind the frontmen?

As for "We're not prepared to get in behind them, to turn them round.", the 1 striker we have who's always looking to run in behind defences (admittedly he does end up being caught offside a bit often because of this) hasn't had a sniff of the matchday squad for months...

This team isnt good enough. the midfield is too slow, too short, too old, too narrow, too weak (doesnt win hardly any 50/50 tackles) and the attacking midfielder GL doesnt know how to score.
All this puts pressure on defence and of course provides little support to forwards.
The 3 games in 8 days was proof that 3 thirty yearolds plus a unless GL cant cut it and need too much rest. so until the windows opens we need Carlos on right midfield Martin on left and then pick fittest two from the usual four.

I haven't posted in a while, but after reading a lot of posts on here lately, I feel compelled to do so.

Are we, as Town fans, so fickle that after three wins we are all claiming that we're going up as champions, then after 2 defeats, we are doomed and PJ is an idiot? How can people be calling for sacking PJ after two bad results. Did Man Utd fans call for Fergie's head after they were hammered by City? Er, no!

It really beggars belief what some people write on here; yes, we are all entitled to our opinions, but let's think before we type. Anyone reading these posts would think that nearly all Town fans have some kind of bipolar disorder.

Four points off a play-off place with 30 games to go is pretty good. Does the team need to improve? Yes. Could we do with another couple of players? Yes. Does the midfield need an injection of pace? Yes. Am I glad that we have PJ instead of Keane. YES!!!!

It's Halloween. Two years ago Derby came to Portman Road with an injury crisis and we managed to beat them 1-0, our first win of the season. This season, despite up and down form, we have at least won six matches.

Keane left this club in a mess, with no saleable assets that he brought in. We sold Wickham for £8.1M and Jewell has only spent £3.5M of that on fees, plus lost two key players on free transfers, so let's not expect miracles. Slow, steady progress, that's what we ask.

Again mass over reaction to a defeat ,on form over the last 6 games we have amassed the same points as West Ham and one less than Saints ,4 more than Derby and Boro all teams have good runs and bad runs over a long season .
We are by no means a good enough side to compete in the premiership but we are a vast improvement on the last few seasons and the areas we have had issues with are being dealt with and identified .
And the constant talk of Jewell not trying youngsters it was not him that got rid of Rhodes,Harding,Clarke,Haynes,Trotter,Garvan ?

But it is him who constantly picks Leadbitter and who plays Edwards out of position which is his issue and needs sorting

It is fair to say that ITFC have more than their fair share of moronic fans. Champions elect if we in a couple, relegation certs if we lose a couple. There's a time for thinking of sacking the manager, but it certainly isn't now. Anyone who thinks otherwise literally knows bugger all about football, and should take up a new hobby, as football isn't for you. When you're at our level, there will be ups and downs. People on here who spout crap about getting rid of the Jewell make me embarressed to be associated with them as fellow ITFC fans. Jewell has forgot more about football than you lot will ever, so if you can't "support" the manager, then bugger off please!
