Town coach Sean McCarthy was at Gillingham’s 3-2 FA Cup defeat of Bournemouth in midweek, running the rule over Gills winger Chris Whelpdale, according to several of this morning’s papers. The 22-year-old was a schoolboy at the Blues’ academy before being released and dropping into non-league.

After spells with Maldon Town and Billericay Town, Whelpdale joined Peterborough United in the summer of 2007 and became a regular in Darren Ferguson’s side which climbed from League Two to the Championship.

Having been involved less in the early stages of last season, the Brentwood-born wideman, who also operated as a right-back during his time at Playford Road, joined Gillingham on loan.

Whelpdale, who is 6ft tall, made a significant impact during his short-term spell at the Priestfield Stadium, scoring three goals in four games, and, despite getting back into the first team picture with Posh, joined the Gills permanently in the summer for an undisclosed fee, signing a contract until 2014.

This season Whelpdale has made 16 starts and three substitute appearances, scoring four goals. He went off at half-time in the Bournemouth game suffering with a chest infection and missed yesterday's 0-0 draw at Bradford.

Sounds an interesting prospect, need to clear out some of the squad first or the same will happen, what happened with Drury and others where they just won't get a game because we won't drop certain players.

Really need to sort out the defensive side of our team first though. Right Back, Central Defender and Defensive Midfielder with height and pace needed.

Get it right. That list is a list of players that we have been linked to. If a player wants £400,000 per week should that be classified as a "failed transfer signing"? No I don't think it should.

The negativity here is beyond belief. What about being positive for a change? Or is everybody here a negative person?

Pathetic. More players were 'linked' with.

The loan deadline ended Thursday & we couldn't even get this guy in from Gillingham so what hope do we have of bringing in anyone at all. We need to face it that no-one wants to come down here.. location is all a load of crap for the fact we are not the club we used to be & think we are & other lesser teams are simply better than us now. This club has been led to ruin since we have had this so called 'investment'

Bring back the days of Joe Royle when he had no money at all yet got the best out of players & brought in hungry players that wanted to win & play football.

I watch Gillingham a fair bit and I think it's fair to say Whelpdale has been out of form this season. He's already taken a drop down from the Championship with Peterborough to play with the Gills this season, so he seems an unlikely target, especially as by his own admission he's not been playing at his best since he made the move. Perhaps it was just to check his progress.

Not keen on starting anymore headless rumours, but they may well have been checking on Gillingham's prime prospect Jack Payne who's a defensive midfielder.

I think we do need a couple of younger players added to the squad but we really do need to clear a few out first. I don't know what the answer is at the moment but it seems the Keane era is come back to haunt us again. Gotta keep our chins up we will be out of this mess soon when we bring burley back and holland as his num 2 haha!!
