Town to Assess Sonko Before Making Trip to North-West
Town to Assess Sonko Before Making Trip to North-West
Monday, 28th Nov 2011 10:36

Key central defender Ibrahima Sonko could be back in the Town squad for Tuesday’s trip to Burnley after his hamstring injury. Keeper David Stockdale has been ruled out and skipper Grant Leadbitter is a huge doubt, while one or two other unnamed players are suffering with minor niggles.

Jewell said: “Sonko might possibly make the squad, we’ll see how he is this morning. Grant has a groin problem which will probably keep him out and we’ve got one or two little other injuries as well, but we have a squad which should be good enough to go and get a result at Burnley.”

Stockdale hurt his shoulder in training last week with Richard Wright again set to be in goal against the Clarets: "Stockers trained a little bit yesterday but he's got a shoulder injury and is a real doubt. I can't see him making it."

Town’s only man on the sidelines longer term at present is defender Damien Delaney, who is still a little way off a return having undergone surgery on a foot injury: “He’s still got a medical boot on and until it comes off I’m not sure. I would imagine it will be three weeks.

“Damo’s quite a quick healer, but we’ll know more when he it comes out of the boot and he can put weight on it.”

The Blues boss, whose squad fly to the North-West later today, played down his interest in Gillingham winger and former academy schoolboy Chris Whelpdale: “Sean McCarthy went to watch Gillingham when the played Bournemouth in the FA Cup [last week]. I don’t even know if Whelpdale played.”

Listen playing with a medical boot on wont really affect our performances - seems most of our defenders have played with them on the past two months - come to think of it same goes for midfield ...
Lets play ; Cresswell , Wright ( make him captain) , Murray , Carson , Martin , Hyam , Ainsley , Lawrence - find some young hungry kids and just rebuild - if we stay up great , if we go down with a hungry team , looking to grow fine - I would be happier than going down with the numpties we have at the moment - time for major reconstruction

@blueherts clearly that is a very exaggerated and idiotic approach but I agree we don't necessarily have to buy young hungry players, we have them in the squad but if you never give them a chance and let them grow within the team they will never shine. I came around to the idea of Murray going out on loan for 6 weeks cos I think he'll gain great experience there but he is definitely the type of player ready to get stuck in in the first team cos he's talented enough and a hungry goal scorer.

gcasselton 1:- Do you not realise that hungry young talented players have no place in our first team or at Portman road with jewell in charge we will be playing 1st division football next season and probably struggling.

I agree with Bobble.
I agree with bluehearts
It's going to be very difficult to hold on to some of our good loan players in January.
Sonko's injury of course was the recent turning point.

gcasselton - Idiotic - yeh , but suggest with the team he is picking at the moment just not cuttust not cutting it he needs to shake it up - If you believe we leave well alone - Maybe slightly tongue in cheek but I honestly would quite enjoy a trip up the road to Stevenage !!!next season

Hopefully we get Sonko back as he appears to hold the defence, and wrighty at the back we should at least be able to communicate in some small way. But should we be positive with what we have seen over the last few games?

Alfro - I am a very positive guy but u can only take so many abject performances - no discipline , cant defend set pieces , no fluidity in passing , no clue when things are going wrong - too many players not motivated - of course we support , but if we just sit back and pretend all is rosy it would not be helping the cause ?

Take your blue specs off Al. Look at the reality of the situation and appreciate that things will actually get worse in the New Year.

OK Tiggs hope to see you in a more positive mood by the end of January.

My specs aren't blue, I see the results and watch the games as you do. All is not rosy, but I don't believe that they are as dire as some on here would have us believe. We have been minutes away from 2 wins which would have meant that most of the negativity on this site would not have happened. We simply need Sonko back and another tall, strong centre half.

The team is now much stronger going forward than we have been for a few seasons. If there is 1 thing that Jewel hasn't been able to do, for whatever reason, is to find a replacements for MacCauley and Delaney.

Alfromcol - I for one agree with what you have said and do get rather bored of reading the doom and gloom comments that are published daily.

As I understand it, we have a game in hand over many of the teams above us and the next three matches should all offer possible wins. If we can't get points in these three matches then may be a will change my mind, but at the moment am trying to stay positive.

The defence is still the biggest worry and I do hope Sonko is back tomorrow.

For whatever reason, Jewel wasn't able to sign quality centre backs in the summer and lets hope he has more luck in January. Assuming he does then I am sure the New Year will offer much better results.

This place is so fickle. We win a few and Jewell is god. We lose a few and its Jewell out.

Come on guys we all knew this was a rebuiding job/seadon and its gonna take time. Lets get behind the team we have and SUPPORT!!! after all thats what we are arent we. supporters.

7 points off the play offs (pint is half full!)

hope sonko plays tomorrow will make the trip worthwhile, but rather wait if theres a chance of him getting injured and being out longer! we need to get behind the blues tomorrow, i think as many people should go tomorrow as possible to show our support and show we can still turn this round!!

Come on lets all get behind the team. Leadbitter played well Saturday and put in a great cross for the 1st goal. If we can keep Andrews I would be more than happy to play Leadbitter and Andrew in midfield as they did on Saturday. Leadbitter was great. Before someone ask - Yes I was there. Defense need sorted but if Sonko is back thats done. Had Sonko played or had we had a goalkeeper that can go and get crossed we would have won the game. Stop moaning and get behind the team.

Should'nt say that one man makes a team but is it a coincidence that we were keeping clean sheets when Sonko was in but have leaked goals since he's been out. Not only is he a top player but he organises the defence too. Honestly i do believe his absence is the main reason for our dismal run. Just looked at their goals again on TV and i reckon Stockdale would have had at least two of them.
