Jewell: Defeats Our Own Doing
Jewell: Defeats Our Own Doing
Monday, 28th Nov 2011 15:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell says that Town have been the architects of their own downfall in recent weeks having developed a tendency to concede goals from set pieces, something which they hadn’t been doing earlier in the season. The Liverpudlian says his side should have picked up six points in the last couple of games, a haul which would have left them far nearer the top of the division than their current lowly standing of 18th.

Jewell said: “You feel physically sick when you lose games at any time, but certainly in the last two weeks the way we’ve lost games is very difficult to take. We’ve lost them through our own doing really.

“We’ve conceded from set plays and yet we hadn’t conceded from a set play up until the Crystal Palace game. Since then we’ve conceded four or five, which is doubly disappointing, especially because of the lateness that the goals have been conceded.”

Having assessed the goals from the Reading game — striker Daryl Murphy having admitted culpability for the Royals' first equaliser — Jewell felt the problems were clear to see: “We watched the videos again yesterday and it’s basically people getting out-jumped at corners, it’s as simple as that.

“And also we have to be careful because we do give silly fouls away at times. We’ve got to cut that pettiness out of our game, which is costing us.”

Jewell believes his side need to have a greater solidity about them at Burnley on Tuesday: “We have to be resilient. We’ve lost five games on the bounce and no one’s going to give us anything. We’ve got good players in the squad, but it’s just not happening for us at the moment.

“We’ve still got a lot of time left in the season, we’ve got a lot of time to climb the table, but we’re also aware we’re at the wrong end of it, we’re not kidding ourselves.

“We’ve been so close in the last couple of games, it’s not as if we’ve been played off the park. We haven’t played well, we certainly didn’t play well on Saturday, but we could easily have had six points out of the last two games and everything would have been rosy.”

While the Blues were letting their late lead slip against Reading, Burnley were coming from behind to win their game against Hull City 3-2, a result which the Town boss feels will have given them a massive boost: “They came back from 2-0 down, scoring three late goals and they’ll be full of confidence now.

"This league is so topsy-turvy, if we’d have got six points out of the last two games, which we could easily have done, I think we’d be one point outside the top six with a game in hand.

“But ifs, buts and maybes are not what win you football matches, it’s actually doing it and I’m aware of that.”

Worrying thing is who our opposition have been. We've lost the last 4 games against teams in the bottom half of the table.

'A master at stating the obvious'

Well what else is he meant to say other than the truth? Stop looking for more petty excuses to criticise him...

Come on jack. He comes out with this same old tripe every week. "We must sort it", "Must stop conceding daft goals" blah blah blah.

Jewell Out

I am started to get a little bored with this rhetoric and although have been a PJ supporter; I am now starting to have serious doubts about his ability.

OK we are all getting a little bored with the same comments, but he is telling it as it is. He has no option but to do this, at least he isn't making excuses. There is no doubt that a lot of time is spent post match analysing the video and trying to sort the mistakes out during training. But if the players don't do it on the day, (in the last few minutes of the last 2 games) then there is little PJ, you me and Uncle Tom Cobbley can do about it. No doubt the issue of big strong keeper and centre half will be urgently addressed during the January transfer window. Not a lot can be done till then, except trying to stop the errors (crosses into the box).

I agree that the central defender issue should have been sorted as soon as it was known that McCauley was leaving. However, for whatever reason, it wasn't so we have to live with that.

Lets hope for some points tomorrow night.

Nobody seems positive about tomorrow night. It is Burnley for crying out loud but they have refreshing young players like Treacy who is a fantastic talent, Rodriguez, Stanislas, and Austin. They will have too much pace and creativity for us to deal with shame but fact.

"We've got good players in the squad, but it's just not happening for us at the moment."

PJ is right we have got good players in the squad, Sonko, Bowyer and Scotland. Trouble is that they are too old, always injured. Sonko and Collins have proved during the six game unbeaten spell that they are solid, but rarely get the chance to play together.

PJ took a gamble on bringing experienced older players into the club, unfortunately its not working. We need to get to the end of the season, avoiding relagation and put in action plan B, that's clearing the old out and bringing in youth and giving it time to flourish!

From what I've read, Stanislas is their JET, so we havnt got a lot to worry about there. What do you people want him to say? He's asked a question, and he answers it. Like J4ck22 says it is more excuses to lambast the manager for what recently has been the players' fault, they have let him down.

PJ is very good at talking - I'll give him that. Likes to crack a joke or too as well - some people like it. Personally, I would prefer him to concetrate on BUILDING a team at ITFC i.e. no more injury prone has beens or loans. sadly, that's all PJ knows and just as he did at Derby - ITFC will be ruined by the time he has finished.

Sonko: has done well - WHEN he has played. No good. Need consistency - but because PJ FAILED to address the defence in the Summer and also before the transfer window closed (no excuse I am afraid) -we are now left with a loanee in Collins (who will go back to Stoke and not resign for an abysmal team like us) and an injury prone freebie in Sonko. Oh and that Icelandic bloke who is a) injury prone b) a has-been c) a freebie (that no-one else wanted) and d) absolute rubbish.

Jewell has completely lost the plot and we will be relegated if we stick with him. But then again the Derby fans told us that. Time for people to wake up and accept how bad he is. WORSE than Roy and Jim combined.

Very interested to read that Kevin Beatie has publically stated that this is the worst team he has seen - TWTD failed to make a big deal of it - but very telling - a great like Beatie saying this is the worst team he has EVER seen. It's PJ's team. PJ is terrible and should be sacked. Please ME - act NOW.

We've got to start doing this, we've got to stop doing that...how many seasons do us the supporters have to keep hearing this? Patience is starting to wear thin...

I too picked up on the Beattie comment , & this coming coming from a guy who 'til now has been a perennial optimist.
I'm almost beginning to think the unthinkable - that a spell in League1 might be for the best in the long run ,with an emphasis on youth.

So many negative posts , they must all be no-hopers who expect instant success which in the modern day is not going to happen . We do not have a right to be unbeatable or have bad luck . Some of our so-called supporters do not live in the real world ! Get real and give the team support !

Looking at transfer fees alone, Keane spent nearly £11M and wasn't sacked despite nearly three months without a win. Jewell has spent £3M and has had a terrible month, but enough to sack him?! Replacing the manager and whole coaching staff would cost a fortune, and then what points is a new manager when he too will be told to look for loans and free transfers?

Reality is biting that we lost McAuley (cost us £1.1M), Norris (cost us £2M) and Wickham (sold for £8.1M) and have tried to replace them without spending transfer fees, which isn't working at the moment.

meekreech. I have backed PJ 100% since his arrival, but after saturday, i no longer have faith in his ability to turn this club around or deliver us to the promised land. I will be there on saturday to support the team, despite the drivel we have been witnessing. Iam a realist but expect much better after seeing nearly every home game for the last 43 years.
