O'Connor: Town Career Coming to an End
O'Connor: Town Career Coming to an End
Tuesday, 29th Nov 2011 10:05

Full-back or midfielder Shane O’Connor is in no doubt that his Town career is at an end hopes he can show potential new clubs what he can do during his month's loan at Port Vale. The Republic of Ireland U21 international's contract at Portman Road is up in June and he appears firmly out of boss Paul Jewell’s plans having appeared for only 15 minutes of the Carling Cup semi-final second leg at Arsenal since the change of manager.

O’Connor said: "I've come here to sell myself to other clubs and get myself another permanent deal. My time at Ipswich is coming to an end and I've got a chance to show people what I can do because I've fallen out of the spotlight.

"I'm looking at my loan move as a trial — trying to impress the management team and players here.

"If all goes well I would 100 per cent sign here in January. This is a club with aspirations to get promoted. I am looking to sell myself to Vale first and foremost as they have given me the chance."

The Cork-born former Liverpool trainee, who could play for Vale’s reserves against Chesterfield this afternoon having arrived at his temporary club too late to be involved in Friday’s 0-0 draw with Torquay, has made 15 starts and seven sub appearances for the Blues without scoring.

Meanwhile, Town's reserves will play a behind-closed-doors friendly at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Monday 12th December.

It's a disgrace that he was never given a proper chance to show what he could do while with us.

I wish him well wherever he goes next and can't help but feel we'll end up ruing the fact we let him go.

in fairness we dont knw what goes on behind the scenes do we ... attitude may not have been 100% very hard to judge without evidence.... but then we can all blame PJ cause its his fault for everything in the world isnt it! Not saying i am happy with the situation, i dread going to Portman Road, but i do think that some thrive on the failure of others and then start up witch hunts which is so not the Ipswich way!

I won't go into detail, but the problem with young Shane, was not so much what he did ON the pitch!!

this is a big shame, I HIGHLY rated O'Connor since he made his debut against Shrewsbury. What happens if Cresswell gets injured, we can't play with Kennedy, millwall proved this and exploited him all afternoon. Bring back Shane in January and give a run in games, starting with the FA cup, give him the chance to show the manager what he can do on the pitch. Its was everyone says, leave them to do their talking on the pitch

as Wallingford Boy eludes to, i think theres something more to the O'Connor thing, i think hes a reasonable back up / squad player, but i cant get my head round whats going on away from what we see to make him so out of favour, RK was similar with him, now PJ...... bad attitude maybe? not a team player or something else?

so what if he had problems off the pitch - it's the same for a number of our 'stars'!

Please forget the blue-tinted sentiment. I wish O'Connor well, but League 2 is his level. He was never good enough for us apart from occasional back-up.

Cobbolds..absolutely right!...Priskins attitude wasnt great, he got starts under jewell because we were short of goals...o connor never got a look in even though we were desperate for some width , attacking full back play and someone who can tackle!...is chops going to get shipped off to league 2 for his off the field problems, or edwards?...NO

The best game I saw the lad play was December 18th in the snow against Leicester that very cold evening , he was brilliant, I have still kept the recording !!!!!!.The Dark Lord would not let the ref. abandon it. ha ha

Its good to see so many youngsters coming through the ranks. Trouble is they go straight through and join other clubs.

If only we could have kept him until he was 33 then he may have got a look in.

Perhaps Jewell, Keane and every other manager in the Championship and League One are wrong about O'Connor, or perhaps they are right and he is a League Two player.

Strange one, looking back when he was playing regularly under RK, he is exactly what we are missing at the moment, in front of Cresswell, he is the sort of player to get forward, help defend and tackle, something that Martin can't do!

Surco72 added 13:36 - Nov 29
The man that bought him didnt play him for a reason ,the manager who has given all a crack including the outcast Martin also doesnt think he is good enough .No other manager in higher leagues has come in for him even though he was made available to all very early on ?
Perhaps maybe he just isnt that good ?

This is a strange one and as others have suggested perhaps there are issues that we are unaware of. Certainly he has looked good when I have seen him play plus he has pace and desire both qualities that are lacking with many of our players. I wish you well Shane.

dont forget he turned down two potential loan moves, opportunities to play first team football AND to show to Jewell it has what it takes... i just think too many voice an opinion without knowing the facts. its like being a jury in a court case and being told the person on trial (in this case Paul Jewell) is guilty but we have no actual evidence we just know he is cause he is that sort of bloke! dont forget HE has given Carson a chance, HE brought Martin back when Keane had dismissed him as useless HE played Wickham week in week out last year so some of the evidence FOR does say he isnt adverse to the right young players. Not saying i love the current situation i dont, not saying i didnt throw darts at his photo saturday cause i did, just think too many are on the Jewell out bandwagon and clutching at every little piece of news that comes out as potentially bad!
