Jewell: Evans Hugely Supportive
Jewell: Evans Hugely Supportive
Thursday, 1st Dec 2011 16:18

Blues boss Paul Jewell says club owner Marcus Evans was “hugely supportive” of him when he spoke to him last night in the wake of Town’s sixth successive defeat at Burnley on Tuesday. The Liverpudlian says Evans has a long-term plan for the club which includes him remaining as manager.

Jewell said: “When I spoke to Marcus last night, he was hugely supportive of me. I’m a big boy, I know how it works and it’s not so long ago that Steve Bruce [sacked yesterday by Sunderland] was being touted as the next England manager.

“Marcus has told me to just keep going. He’s got long-term plans for the club and he wants me to be the manager.

“Until I’m told any different, nothing will change. I’ll always do my best. I don’t feel as if it’s a hopeless case, I feel that it’s really tough at the moment, really tough, but not much comes easy in life.”

The ex-Wigan and Bradford boss says he was unaware that he had been handed a vote of confidence by the club’s chief executive until earlier today: “I didn’t know that until this morning when Simon Clegg rang me and said he’d come out in support of me.

“I spoke to the owner last night, he’s away on business. I don’t read papers or whatever, win, lose or draw, so I wasn’t aware of the dreaded vote of confidence he’s given me.

“I’m a big boy, I’ve been manager for nearly 550 games, so everything that happens in the game, good, bad or indifferent, I’ve seen it.”

Jewell says he still believes he can turn things around: “I just have to try my best. Everyone at the moment is telling you you’re not very good at your job, but you’ve got to be strong and you’ve got to have belief in your ability and I think I am good at what I do.

“But I’m always learning, I’m always trying to get better. What else can I do? Do you want me to hide under the table, run away or close the door? I don’t want to that. You feel like doing it sometimes but eventually you have to come out and face the music.”

Onwards and upwards.
Lets hope these players re-pay Jewells faith in them as they have let both him and the fans down badly the last few weeks.

I completely agree, if we are to improve we need a manager who knows the club. I think PJ has the ability to see what the club needs. He has done this before, and has the experience to know what it takes to do well in this league. Lets face it, is there a better manager out there who is realistic, affordable and has the experience of PJ?

This summer was a nightmare in terms of what he had to do, key players contracts ran out and he was needed to desperately fill gaps with the quality we are used to. The reason our team is ageing, is because you don't get young players who are ready for first team football cheaply or easily. He did a difficult job reasonably well I think. Look at the difference in our team now compared to when Keane left!

Now we have a squad, at least of a reasonable quality, I feel its time to give PJ the money and time he didn't have in the summer to push on after Christmas, but ultimately for next year. Rome wasn't built in a day! Its time for us to all get behind the team, and give them the confidence for a better second half of the season, which will attract a better quality of player next year.

Maybe Evans long term plans is to always ensure we're a massive loss making enterprise to off set his profits in his other business enterprises for tax purposes. I'm no expert but you never know! Time Evans showed his face and spoke to the fans (ie his customers), rather than the tool that is Clegg.

long term plan eh, someone tell Mr Evans that by trying to reach this desired plan we'll be a Premier League Club trading in Division One with gates of 12k...a sacking comes when the Manager loses the majority of the supporters - too many awful displays this season has brought us to this point and surely he can see this..

if we get relegated and win league 1 like no~rwich and then get in to play offs or automatic promotion we can get in the premier league. not saying get relegated and do it if we do get relegated. if we get relegated get burley in. get burley in now .

Ozzy & gainsbourough- totally right, there is little communication between the club and supporters concerning log term plans other than ME remains commited to getting ITFC into the premiership. Woeful public relations.

ipswichm8 : Try reading the comments and then look up the definition of "everyone" in the dictionary.

Just ignore the negative stuff on here PJ as it is representative of only a minority of the overall support of ITFC. You probably don't bother reading it anyway!

Good luck for Saturday. Onwards and UPWARDS.

Well Mr. Evans, your probably the only person who has faith at the moment! I really hope we can pull this run of bad results around.

Maybe play the reserve team? They can't do any worse than the first team surely?

Supporting the team through good times and bad times is what fans do. We are definitely having a bad time at the moment, i don't think changing the manager every time we hit a bad patch achieves anything, especially mid season. Otherwise i think we will still be at this stage in 10 seasons time. You can't build a house without foundations.
