Doncaster Confirm Sharp Release Clause
Doncaster Confirm Sharp Release Clause
Monday, 19th Dec 2011 09:24

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan has confirmed that there is a release clause in striker Billy Sharp’s contract with interested parties needing to offer £3 million in January for it to be triggered. The Blues, Southampton, Cardiff, Burnley and Leicester have all recently been linked with the 25-year-old.

Ryan, keen to end speculation regarding the activation figure, said: "When the window opens on January 1st, Billy's contract with Doncaster Rovers will include a release clause priced at exactly £3 million.

"Lots of clubs are circling. Southampton and Ipswich made previous bids. Anybody who matches that new figure can talk to Billy.”

But the Rovers chief says he’s keen to keep Sharp, who has scored nine goals this season, at the Keepmoat Stadium if he can: "Obviously, we don't want to lose the lad at this vital stage when we are fighting to retain our Championship status.

"I've given my word to Billy, though. We have a gentlemen's agreement and any final decision on a move is down to Billy himself."

In the summer the Blues had a £2.3 million offer rebuffed by the South Yorkshiremen, while the player turned down a move to Southampton after the clubs agreed a fee of £3.25 million, with the release clause only understood to come into effect from January. Sharp is contracted to Doncaster until the summer of 2013.

Doing well at a struggling team in our division, could be a good fit and not a silly price seeing how he is bagging goals. However, how big is our current striker list, all of whom should be doing well at this level... so is he a total 'must have' over defenders and possibly a goalie??? And did anyone else spot 4-goal Jordan doing the business again for Huddersfield... you do wonder about our club sometimes don't you!

£3m is a lot we could spend on strengthening other areas of the team. Couple of £1m+ defenders for a start.

My doubt on this is location. I think he will want to stay up north and a prem team may take a punt. Who could blame them!

Another non story, we are not going to be paying 3M for anybody given the perilous state of our finances and with gates and income falling week by week, I think we will see a couple of loans or players from lower leagues, in any case just why would he come to Ipswich, Saints are a much better proposition,
I think we can forget it and look elsewhere, although I doubt we will see much activity on the transfer front at all.

Who would you have Sharp or Rhodes? It would be Rhodes for me and because of a sell on clause we maybe able to get him for a good fee? I know PJ has said we are not interested but why? Is it because of the owner and Clegg saying no because they are to embarrassed to admit they made massive mistake letting him go!

Only a fool would buy Sharp and not Rhodes.

Therfore I fully expect ITFC to go for Sharp

Well is it a release clause or a gentlemen's agreement? Something not quite right here. In the end it will be down to money/contract, as it always is. Geography or even position in the league is normally not relevant. What the player (quite rightly) wants is big wages and long contract.

Sharp proven in this league - Rhodes not proven - i know who i'd prefer if we are spending significant money!

£3M is a lot of money and it remains to be seen whether Jewell will be allowed to spend this sort of money, which is more than Magilton spent on £2M Norris and Keane spent on £2.7M Leadbitter. Wages and a signing-on fee are a big part of the cost too remember, as a 4-year contract could make a total package of nearly £6M which is an awful lot (17,000 season tickets!) if he flops of gets injured. I'd like to see us sign Sharp, but rationally ask whether the money would be better invested in lower league players and our own Grade One youth academy?

Chopra, Scotland, Ellington, Murphy, JET, Priskin, Murray and Sharpe! I'm starting to think PJ collects strikers. Spend the money on your defence Paul - its bloody obvious!

If we were top 6 then maybe. However in our current plight we haven't got a chance. He'll be off to a top Championship side, perhaps even PL. Someone like Sunderland (who need a hitman) might take a chance on him...

Would rather see us offer £3m for Jordan Rhodes personally.

I am puzzled about the enthusiasm here for buying Sharp. Yes, he's a decent player, but do his advocates want him to replace Chopra? Or Scotland? Yes, I think we all hope that Priskin will leave in January, and Ellington has done next to nothing (surprise, surprise), but a striker hardly seems a priority. We still haven't sorted out RB; we need at least one CB; and the midfield is a muddle. Get those fixed first.

One other thought: £3m?? That's an awful lot of money. We are not in a position to throw that kind of cash around casually.

BLUEPETER I know we're a struggling team that's why I said he'd be a good fit. Club wise (in respect of form and position at least) it's almost a straight transition for him from Donny to ITFC. However, personally I think we have enough strikers who should be able to put the ball in the net. Look at TITANICCLOWN'S list, 18 months ago if we were given that on a piece of paper most of us would be shouting ‘sign them up, great buys!!!' so what's changed? I think what we need is quality service to the frontmen and some defenders who can help stop the leak at the back. Agree with others on here, I think he'd be a 'lovely to have' but a realistic chance, I don't know. Look at it from his POV, firstly he's quite high profile right now and I'm sure there will be other offers, so I imagine he would be asking himself would it be a 'step up' from where he is now??? I'd say ITFC and Donny right now are probably both at the same level... coming here at the moment is probably seen as a punt by a lot of players, maybe even a bit of a gravy train, so if you were a rated 25 year old, being praised on the TV, clearly destined to move on what would you do, stick it out where you are and get another 10 goals and increase your price tag/desirability, or go to a club not much better than where you are right now which is underperforming and failed to achieve anything in the past 5-years??? If he did it just for the money then it won't work for both parties. Will be interesting to see how it pans out, but if ME says, get him and here's some extra cash for key areas strengthen them too, then could be win win all round. I think though we have enough good Championship level strikers, I don't think we're on any half decent Championship players ‘wish' list the next step up for them is the Prem, not a team struggling and in a rebuilding phase which may or may not work (which I hope it does), but me personally I'd be looking for players who are experienced, who WANT to play in the Championship and have the potential to become part of an established first team. Does Billy Sharpe fit that criteria??? I'm not sure he does.

I would not be dissopointed to get either, i was also impressed by young Derby striker Callam Ball ?? he is very inexperanced but managed to bully both Collins and Sonko, Collins, who seems to be good enough to be heading back to Prem, even needed to complain to Ref about him, a big moral victory for the lad who seems to me to have similar qualities to Wickham or Lambert or dare i say a Grant Holt in the making!!!

We have no chance of doing a deal for Sharp. Even if PJ wants him (bit young maybe?) - Clegg is unlikely to do the deal. His record so far is poor - only really negotiating two fees in the Summer; over the odds for JET and Chopra - who no-one else wanted!!

tractorboy2434. you keep going on about iur perilous finances? we dont have any, as any debt we have is purely to M.E. so unless he suddenly decides he wants out & wants his money back, while we may have a debt, we dont owe anyone but him, we dont owe the banks a penny. so therefore if M.E. feels it right to spend £3m on sharp(presuming P.J. wants him), then im sure we will be trying to sign him.

scoring goals has not been a problem albiet the top scorer has now left us. However I think there are more urgent areas that we need to address such as central defence and right back. If these are not dealt with first we will be knocking on the door of relegation all season.
