Andrews Surprised Town Not Doing More to Keep Him
Andrews Surprised Town Not Doing More to Keep Him
Wednesday, 21st Dec 2011 15:06

On-loan star Keith Andrews has expressed his surprise that Ipswich are not doing more to retain his services on a permanent basis.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder has netted nine goals in 19 appearances since arriving from Blackburn in January and is set to return there after the home clash with Nottingham Forest on January 2.

Andrews, 31, has become a target for several other clubs as a result of his performances for Ipswich but manager Paul Jewell, most recently as Saturday after the home win over Derby County, has regularly insisted the club would do everything within its power to keep him at Portman Road.

Premiership clubs Aston Villa, Everton, Bolton, Swansea and Wigan have all been linked with Andrews, who confirmed his agent met with Town owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg on Monday.

Andrews said: “I can’t really say too much but I haven’t been given the impression by the club that they want to do anything.

“Going back a few weeks I told my agent to phone the club out of courtesy because he was speaking to other clubs on my behalf, which he was fully entitled to do.

“With me being here and enjoying it I wanted him to touch base with Ipswich but from our point of view they haven’t given us the impression that they want to do anything, so that’s where we are at the moment.”

Asked if he had discussed the possibility of joining Town on a permanent basis, Andrews replied: “No, I haven’t spoken to Paul about it at all. Maybe that is the plan in the next few weeks — I’m not too sure — but nobody has spoken to me on a personal note.

“There have been very few discussions between the senior management at the club and my agent, so I’ve nothing to report.”

Andrews confirmed that several other clubs had shown an interest, adding: “It’s a little bit hazy at the moment. Blackburn are in a bit of disarray and we don’t know what way it is going to go there.

“Who knows if there is going to be a change of manager? As it stands I’ll be going back after the Forest game and I’ll just have to wait and see how January pans out.”

BIG shame.... this guy has proven himself on the field works hard. One great captain leading by example should have it full time for me. Big hit with the town fans im sure he would stay if town showed more intrest

Kean will get the sack at blackburn and the new boss will want to look at all players before any players allowed to leave.

But not suprised we havent been in touch with his agent who does the deals as town oh yes clegg the clown

Not what we want to hear.

Jewell obviously wants to keep him, maybe he just needs to let Andrews know it once in a while?

The problem is two-fold - we have a poor manager - yes some will dispute this, but so far this season we only sit 19th - and most people bang on about judging PJ at Christmas - well, results have been on the whole poor and the league position is terrible. We shouldn;t be surprised that PJ has not dealt with this or other deals yet.

however more of a concern is Clegg. Worse than PJ. He only managed to negotiate two deals all Summer - the rest were loans, freebies and a tribunal. He over paid for JET and no-one else wanted Chopra or most of our other signings for that matter. So - where is the surprise that he hasn't looked into signing Andrews? Probably busy with Christmas lunches for ME's other business interests.

Odds sounds on this one. Nothing seems to tie up. If PJ is serious in wanting to keep him then I would have assumed that ME et al would have made positive noises to Andrews.

Who knows what the truth is, time will tell.

I assume that Andrews wants to keep as many clubs interested as possible in the hope that he can trade one offer against the next. Hence putting out negative vibes about discussions with ITFC

I thought ME was meeting his agent Monday? When did he say the above and to whom?

Well we should be sorting it out now rather than talking about other strikers, we already have enough on our books that don't perform keep Andrews and get the defence sorted are far more important.

Perhaps that's because we dont want to start the bidding too soon! so often in the past we've made a move for a particular player only to be out bid.
Maybe his agent is just stoking it up as he's unlikely to get very long contract offers. Plus those Premiership clubs that are interested maybe relegated at end of season!

Probably because he probably wants to keep premiership sized wages, other than goal's he is about average at best, plenty better / more energetic players about on less wage.
We need a more energetic midfielder. Just look at the improvement when Martin played in the centre at the weekend, he's probably 1st to tell people he's not much suited to it in the middle but his energy in the middle improved the team 10 fold.

A club in our situation should ne walking on broken glass to keep a player like Andrews!! Get rid of Leadbitter and use the funds to whatever wages he asks for!

I believe we have a great player here, who sadly may pass us by. Even if he is 31, he has the quality of Bullard with a higher work-rate and a proven end product over the season. Remember Magilton came to us at a similar stage of his career and gave us some great times! Sign him up, make him captain, and show the supporters that this club CAN be well-run after all.

Clegg's got more important things on his plate. After all, it's only 7 months to the Olympics!

most likely lazy journalism and some twisted replies. no one can do any deals until january and his agent has met with the owner. no business man is going to put his best deal on the table at the first meeting, especially with the behaviour of agents. Other clubs are always going to be interested after his recent record, but lets wait and see.....
sounds to me like Keith wants to come here and is trying to speed it up......

I stand by my view that Andrews is not good enough for the premier league and would be in a much better position come the euros if he has been playing games and scoring goals for us.

He's shown with Blackburn he isn't good enough for that level and to be honest in general play this season he hasn't been outstanding, but obviously his goals are invaluable.

Unless he just wants a bit more cash in his pocket I think he would be better staying where he knows he can impress and play regularly (HERE).

Agent Speak. Nothing to see here. Didn't we get a similar carry-one from Bullard's agent last season?

No IFs or Buts on this one !!!

Andrews is an outstanding player with bags of experience and more goals coming from this gifted player no doubt...he is without doubt a permiership player but I think he has enjoyed the Crack as he would say here at portman road and is liked and very well respected not only by the fans but the players too and a replacement will be hard if not impossible to find.
His goal rate his huge...let him go back let the New boss look at him and lets put an offer in that says YES we want him and Yes his worth every red cent....do this and I think we stand a chance this season to get in if not very close to a playoff place...regards Chopra he will definatly come good in thwe New Year as is Scotland as I predicited some time ago shame about Priskin as I know he would have found the net and also given the chance would have proved to be a top scorer for us with time but something we really dont have this season if were to put on a canter up the table....Bullard is also a key player and I can see him getting his form back that give us alot of players that will be bagging goals but without Andrews there with his timley goals lifting the team so sign him make no mistake this guy is mustard!!!!

I know for certain Keith wants to stay & not for the big wages either. He feels tis is where he can enjoy his footie be captain & help itfc back to premiership. Plus he knows its thanks to itfc he got back in irish team. So Mr Clegg sort it out. Regards irish Tim
