Crewe Bid Reportedly Turned Down
Crewe Bid Reportedly Turned Down
Wednesday, 18th Jan 2012 20:48

Reports from Cheshire claim Town have had a £2 million offer for Crewe’s 17-year-old midfielder Nick Powell turned down. The England U18 international is the third player the Blues made a bid for over the weekend.

Town would appear to be outsiders for Powell’s signature with Arsenal and Chelsea understood to be amongst a pack of Premier League clubs chasing the latest talent to roll off the Gresty Road conveyor belt.

Speaking earlier this month, Alex manager Steve Davis said he felt Powell needed to spend longer with the League Two club: “Nick is a young lad and in my opinion he’s not ready to go anywhere yet.

"He’s at the best club for his education and when the time is right, he’ll go.”

am getting slightly concerned that Town simply aren't addressing the real problem - lack of defenders and there is only a week and 6 days left of this window and we are still no closer to signing a single player!

Two hurdles to make a signing
1) Get the club to agree to sell - offer enough and they will
2) The player has to agree - who in his right mind would want to join a club with Evans, Clegg or Jewell involved?

2 mill for a league 2 player . crickey we are pushing the boat out and taking a big gamble on this guy for that price.

thats at least twice what we got for rhodes !! and he was 19 ? and just about hovering round a first team squad place in the championship

Whereas it is good to see we are looking for young players of the future, agree with "Retroblue" , we desperately need defenders. Other clubs always seem to get their players so much easier and quickly - we get linked to player after player and it never seems to happen, very common since Clegg arrived!

£2m for a 17-year-old from League Two? Wow, he must be good. On the other hand, I expect Josh Carson may just have got some more leverage in his contract negotiations.

Don't panic; I am sure jewell will get defenders they are prority but if he wants another position he has to put a bid in
He has to wait to see if the bid is accepted or declined in the mean time jewell will be looking for plans b,c etc!

too much, get him on loan just to see how he is, 2m is too much on a gamble, its just potential is why he is rated highly, he mightened be able to handle championship football

Tick tock, tick tock.

Getting towards panic time. Real chance we'll go down without 3 or 4 signings.

Tick tock.

Cant see Chelsea signing him.

Remember when the big 4 were all going to sign Wickham?

That is utterly crazy money for an unproven 17 year old, it's ridiculous. £2m at this level should buy you a world-beater. It's just too much of a gamble IMO.

Feel a bit for PJ though, now bidding for young, up and coming stars, and he's trashed for not focussing on defenders. Sure we need them, massively, but other areas of the team need improving too and I genuinely believe our defensive record would improve drastically if it wasn't put under constant pressure for 90+ minutes. Attack is the beat form of defence and all that.

Arsenal, Chelsea or Ipswich? Now let me think, where is he likely to go!

Get real people.

£2M is a gamble, but he may develop into a star and be worth £20M. In theory £2M should buy a proven top Championship player, but we know from the likes of Priskin and Leadbitter that this isn't always the case. Also, players in their 30s like Edwards and Bullard probably cost us over £2M when wages are taken into the account and that is with the knowledge they will be worth zero at the end of their contracts. I would rather invest in decent youngsters than spend it on older players.

Wow 2ML For him well let me check Fifa 12 & see what lvl he is & if he lvls up quick then he must be good. I know we need defenders but if we improve the whole team then the defence will know tht the team is working hard & they will. well All i want is youth maybe 1 old player bought this transfer window. I hope we get someone in before leeds game. After Jan I wanna see good football & get confidence up ready to push for promotion next season. Jewell Should stay & only go if we go down or get no defenders this transfer windown. I hav Faith in Jewell keep it up & prove us ur the man for the JOB & Carson please sign soon we need you.

Crewe want £5million, and fair play to them. They know there is a lot of hype about this lad, and have obviously tried to up his price with the big wigs hovering around. Only what we did with Wickham in the summer.

We won't get him, realistically he'll end up on Wenger's conveyor belt of developed brilliant young talent. Would rather we didn't go from the sublime of signing 34 year olds to the absolute ridiculous of bidding millions for 17 year olds. Scour League 1/ 2 and the Championship (and possibly PL clubs for promising young players on loan) for young talent who have decent experience for their age, are hungry to succeed, and available at sensible prices due to circumstances such as financial problems or expiring contracts (like the guys at Pompey). If the likes of Hoolahan and Scott Sinclair could be snapped up by Norwich and Swansea for £300k and £500k respectively, then there is plenty of common sense in going down this road

Can't be true £2m for an unproven 17 year old.

Must be mad. Get a CH and RB

it seems as if PJ has gone from one extreme to the other. can we get real and concentrate on the proven defenders or midfielders that we need. yes midfielders because midfield need to take some work off our defence which is under too much pressure. it seems like defending as a team is ouor problem rather than just getting in defenders alone.

Know this lad well. My son been at Crewe academy for seven years and seen plenty of him. Very talented player and should be a prem player in time. Audacious bid but heard that Chelsea had already been put off by Darios valuation of him so thought that we may not be successful. Shame. Also heard he may be heading to a well known north west side.

£2m for an unproven kid? Good heavens, a risk in my view - but shows the club are serious. It might be a genius buy or Crewe turned it down because bigger boys with bigger pockets are sniffing?

To be honest, the position we are in, we really need ready made players to come in and hit the ground running. Big step for a 17 yr old - however good he is / or his potential.

As for folks giving all that about the complexities of transfers, etc - give it a rest. How come other teams have bought players already? Lots of this stuff should have been being done prior to January - maybe it was, but not successfully so, if that is the case. Talks can kick off before 1st Jan. We know there will be a flurry of activity towards the end of the window, which is fast approaching - but we needed guys in early doors in my view - I accept that can't always happen.

It was suggested that signings would be made before the Leeds game... it may still happen, disappointing if it doesn't.
