Crewe Boss Denies Town Offer
Crewe Boss Denies Town Offer
Thursday, 19th Jan 2012 09:52

Crewe boss Steve Davis says he’s unaware of Town’s interest in his side’s 17-year-old midfielder Nick Powell. However, TWTD understands that the England U18 international is indeed the third player Paul Jewell made an offer for over the weekend.

Davis said: “It's the first I've heard of it. My phone is always on and no one has been in contact with me.

"There have been no inquiries, never mind offers. I'm in close contact with the chairman [John Bowler].”

Town are understood to have had a £2 million offer for Powell, who has been named December's Football League Young Player of the Month, rebuffed with plenty of clubs — including Arsenal and Chelsea — having shown interest in the midfielder this season.

Meanwhile, sources on the south coast report that Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton has said Town targets Joel Ward and Jason Pearce are very much part of his long-term plans, Town also having had an offer for the pair turned down by Pompey.

Transfer windows with Ipwsich are like the worst christmas ever. Keep being told you're going to get a bike or a playstation, end up with a jigsaw puzzle.

maybe the bid went to Dario instead?

Poor old Steve Davis may have had his authority undermined on this one.

PJ knows the deficiencies in his playing staff and has admitted as much recently. Yet with only 12 days of the transfer window remaining we have no one in without much prospect of anyone coming either other than whispers and rumours, most of which are unfounded. I cannot believe we are close to signing anyone as PJ seems quite happy to name drop players he may be interested in......didnt Cotterill get a proper slagging off for doing the same thing last year with Norris?

I obviously hope Im wrong and he's got a whole new team of young, brilliantly talented young players gagging to sign up today!!!

Not a hope in hell, if he is being chased by Arsenal and Chelsea we cannot afford him.

He is 17 and it will be the Wickham saga all over again "he's young we dont want to burn him out" he is a long term prospect" " he's the next Ryan Giggs" etc etc.

Then 2 years down the line we will sell him.

We need players in who can do a job now and get us up the table.

I agree with bald man, why bid £2m for a 17 year old who might need time to settle in when we could get the two from pompey in our back 4 by saturday with the same bid??

Karlos surely Jewell tried to sign players that could do it now Bullard our player of the year ,Bowyer who had a very good season in the premiership,Jet who had a good year in the championship at a team top 6 all season ,Chopra a proven goal scorer at championship level, plus loans of Andrews ,Collins and Stockdale and that is what he is being criticised for now he is looking at young talented hungry players for the future it is still wrong ?
Arsenal,Chelsea,Spurs and Liverpool were chasing Wickham he plays at Sunderland !!

I thought the 3rd player was meant to be 19 and not 17?
Regardless would be a great signing

Jewell is doing the right thing at looking at younger players, my point being why spend £2 million on a lad who will need time to settle and waste time on someone who Arsenal have show a huge intrest in.

The lads from Portsmouth have got games at this level under their belts, we need players in to change the squard now to change the situation we are in now.

This lad from Crewe for me is one we look at in the summer for the future.
The Andrews and Collins did very well for us but we cant afford them, and I feel the loan market should be used to cover areas we need due to injury and help cover while the younger lads improve. (ie if Carson needs resting then the loan player takes his place, to help the lad develop).

Bowyer for me and Sonko should be back up like Kennedy. We all were happy with the Bullard and Chopra signings but as you say they just have not done it.

In the past you could name the Ipswich side nowadays no hope, yes football has changed but the basics are still the same.

Beattie, Hunter at the back, with Osman and Butcher learning their trade. The Parkins and Turners of that era were used as cover and sub apprearances, but the club always had a core team.
Now every 18 months we have a full change round in staff and we start again.
Yes build for the futrue, but that means Jewell needs to stay long term and bring in the younger players to build the core of the team, but thats need to be done in the summer, at the minute we need younger players who are proven at this level who have the stomach for a religation battle not spend all our budget on a player who has only played a handful of Div 2 games.

Only my opinion

This is all paper talk as i doubt very much that we'll be in the market for susch a high profile prospect. i'm not encouraged at all by PJ's efforts to sign key players either because of our location/current position in the league/no longer an attractive Club. We've missed so many players that have been on the market who have gone elsewhere or stayed put. We need a manager that has a following so the players he chooses want to come here.
If i was Clegg i'd stop PJ from signing any player over 25 for less that 3years. We need to be able to compete and have young enough legs to cover the whole pitch for 90 mins. Drury, Hyam, JET etc must play every week and leave the over 30's like Bowyer Ellington on the bench till they eventually go.

Karlos i whole heartedly agree we need to stick with a manager for more than a season to allow him to bring through his young players and signings when they are ready .The constant chopping of managers has only resorted in the players being moved on at an alarming rate also .
And although maybe Ellington ,Bullard,Bowyer ,Sonko have not excelled on the pitch as hoped for their experience is invaluable to the likes of Smith,Hyam,Drury,Jet which most on here are forgetting .
And though only 17 Powell has got more playing experience at mens first team football than Hyam ?

Town have bid 1.3 million and not the 2 million being quoted in some papers. According to my contact in Crewe they have bene told to come back with a more realistic offer and then they can talk.

@ Pessimistic - Can you tell your contact at Crewe to tell his boss to come back with a more realistic expectation too? Might knock him down a few quid.

Hey I love Ipswich, I watched them in the 60s when I lived in Essex. Under Robson they were great,
Most of the comments on here are so ill-informed. Jewell is trying to keep his job by making ridiculous offers for players. Aren't you supposed to have a mega-rich backer?
If this is the case then why did you sell Wickham?
We have had bids from Arsenal and Liverpool so why sell to a club in the Championship who are struggling?
We will go the Crewe way and develop the lad and he will go to a club that we feel right for us and for him and sorry that won't be you
Oh good luck for the rest of the season, I hope you stay up, always look for your results

Oh by the way it is Alexandra not Alexander
